Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.
This is how books you mention should look:

Welcome Laura. President Lincoln is very much on the minds of West Virginians as it was 150 years ago that Lincoln took it upon himself (some think illegally) to make the western part of Virginia, West Virginia. Mother Jones thought it was because he admired the people of those Appalachian mountains, but more likely it was because Virginia was divided in loyalties during the Civil War. He thought (I'm not sure) that western Virginia (now West Virginia) was loyal to the north.

I am impressed with your own history of WWII. My father was in the American Navy during that time. I too would love us as people to learn a bit more from history.

Thanks for the information.
Hello Heinz,
You cannot self promote and add links to your profile on this site - sorry or allude to it, being an author or writing. We want folks to write about their love of history and get to know the group.
So I have reposted your intro:
Hello everyone,
My name is Heinz Kohler and I have just discovered and joined this group. I am a retired college professor, used to teach......about economics and statistics, but have always had a special interest in history. That may be so because I lived through World War II as a young boy at the very place (Berlin, Germany) where the war was hatched. Rather foolishly, I still hope that people one day may learn from history. ............

I’ve had a passion for history ever since I was a small kid and fell in love with Ancient Greece and The Odyssey, as retold by Barbara Leonie Picard. In fiction mode, I migrated through Rosemary Sutcliffe and Ronald Welch to Mary Renault and more recently Lindsey Davis, with plenty of other good authors sandwiched in between. I love well-researched stories with complex but colourful characters and a strong plot.
This love morphed into some serious non-fiction reading and soon I was exploring well beyond the range of my school and university texts. I graduated in history, Senior Scholar in my final years and majoring in medieval and modern history, but it took me years to get back to my first love, Ancient Greece – I’d convinced myself I was rotten at languages until I went back to university to learn Greek in my 30’s.
My major focuses are on the Greek Bronze Age and Greek mythology, as described in both fact and fiction. I’m a real book buyer, so I’m constantly running out of room for my latest acquisitions. Pruning books is like pulling teeth!
A colourful introduction to the Greek Bronze Age is George Emmanuel Mylonas’s Mycenae Rich in Gold

Hello Catherine,
Welcome to the History Book Club. Let me help you with the citations of the books and authors you mentioned:
First, for most books, you would add the bookcover, the author's photo and always the author's link:
by
Homer
Then for authors, you would always add the author's photo when available and also the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text. If the photo is not available - just add the author's link followed by (no photo).
Barbara Leonie Picard (no photo)
Rosemary Sutcliffe (no photo)
Ronald Welch (no photo)
Mary Renault - not found in Goodreads
Then for authors where there is a photo, you would add the author's photo and also the author's link.
Lindsey Davis
Then for books which do not have a book cover - type in (no image) first then add the book link which is the book title, then the author's photo if available and then the author's link. If the author's photo is not available - at the end add (no photo) after the author's link.
(no image) Mycenae Rich in Gold by George Emmanuel Mylonas (no photo)
If you need help with citations and most folks do, please go to the thread called the Mechanics of the Board thread in the Help Desk folder and there you can practice your citations and we will help you.

Brant (from Beijing, China) - hello. I have been to China for many extended visits and have enjoyed your wonderful city with its ancient buildings and many of its ancient customs still so evident. What is so fascinating about Beijing is how it has moved into the future with a lot of grace so far - preserving its own history alongside the beautiful architecture of the past and present.
We look forward to reading your posts Brant and to discussing China as well as many other parts of the world with you.

Welcome Catherine, Brant, Laura, Grace and Shahi. History is such a huge topic, there's something for everyone.

My name is Hugues. I'm french and teach history in high school. I am interested in Later Middle Age history and Early Modern History. I join this group because I would read books about Hundred Years War but from the point of view of England side. While reading Paul Doherty's mysteries books (althestan and Corbett), I would like know more about England in the Late Middle Age. Would you have some recommandations for me ?
