TCF Monopoly Player Discussion Thread

Question: in playing this >>does the next player wait til you are done reading the books for where you land before they can *roll* the dice?
I'm also trying to think how time consuming this would be with the other challenges I'm in before I say yeah or nay.

Paris do we have to use those shelves and not books from our own TBR lists? I'd rather use my own books rather than keep looking through somebody else's favorites for what I want to read.

Pat - You do need to use the shelf provided to find a book to read, but I picked general shelves that everyone in the group should be able to find books from so that it would be fair. I didn't pick any shelves that were genre specific because I didn't want to alienate anyone. When you click on the shelf you should be able to find books from your TBR list there.
For example: when I click on the favorites shelf for Mediterranean Avenue over half the books on the first page are books either on my TBR or books I've read. And there are many pages per shelf to go through.

Ezi, I'm out. I know what I want to read and this doesn't seem as if it will help me accomplish my goals to clear my TBR island (I'd have to go thru someone else's shelf to find a book that worked for me. I don't like that.)

No worries Paris, your game is gonna work great

no worries - sent you a pm

One suggestion I'd make is to try to pair people who read at similar speeds together otherwise the other player may be able to take over a lot of the board before the first player gets a chance to get round.
I am however IN!!!!! :D

Sarah mentioned she was looking for a slower game, so I noted that next to her name.

I'm about a book a week

Say we roll the same number and are on a property we need to read 2 books to own.... The one that reads them first and post owns property and the other has to read 3 books since they are on a owned property( or is that rent free that time)?
Still at work but boss is away from computer so I got to jump on.... :) I signed us up Jenne.

Sarah and Belinda are looking for anyone else who might want to join them. They are looking at playing a game that is a bit slower at one book a week.

Look at you :D
Look at you :D

I didn't see anything about re-reads? Are they allowed? I know I'll have big problems with Book Club Books the shelf is filled with no-thanks and already read books.

*looks around sheepishly*
Well um, I can't answer that question because I haven't read the rules, so I'm not even sure what books a week has to do with anything. I just saw a new challenge and signed up :D
Can I get back to you after the Walking Dead?

Games can be between 2-4 players. Please let us know what kind of game you're looking for or your reading speed. For example, I read really fast, so I'd probably work better playing against someone else who reads really fast.
Game Note: I know some people like to play Monopoly that you have to go around the board once before you can buy property (I never play that way mostly because it makes those marathon games even longer, lol). With this you don't have to go around once. You land on it, you read the necessary requirements, it's yours.
Questions asked in this thread
Q:does the next player wait til you are done reading the books for where you land before they can *roll* the dice?
A: the next player does not have to wait until you finish to read. As soon as you read, you roll. So while there's no rush, there really might be depending on who you're playing with. It's really as time consuming as you want it to be. You and your playing partner can make it as fast or slow as you want it to be.
Q: Do we have to use those shelves and not books from our own TBR lists?
A: You do need to use the shelf provided to find a book to read, but I picked general shelves that everyone in the group should be able to find books from so that it would be fair. I didn't pick any shelves that were genre specific because I didn't want to alienate anyone. When you click on the shelf you should be able to find books from your TBR list there.
Q: Say we roll the same number and are on a property we need to read 2 books to own.... The one that reads them first and post owns property and the other has to read 3 books since they are on a owned property( or is that rent free that time)?
A: The person who reads first and posts owns that property, but since you were both there at the same time, it's a rent free land for the other person. However, that person has to finish reading and post the reviews that they were doing to try to win that spot. Just because say you beat Jenne, doesn't mean Jenne then gets to roll right away, she has to finish whatever she was reading and post before she can move on.
Q: I didn't see anything about re-reads? Are they allowed?
A: Re-reads are perfectly fine
Q: I have a question about being in jail(when playing the real game I seem to end up here a lot). When trying to roll doubles to get out, do the three turns have to be on different days, or can we just roll the dice three times in a row and then resort to the book option if we don't get doubles?
A: Good question TC....rolling three times in a row I think would be too easy and not give the other person a chance to capitulate on you being in jail. However, rolling once a day would make being in jail the only time you can't roll as soon as you're done...
I'm gonna say you can roll twice a day for jail. So you end up there, you can roll once more that day and then twice the next day
Q: Can't I just pay bail money and get out of jail? That's what people do in real life, post bail or pay a bond.
A: If you don't want to roll doubles, then you could read a book where a character is arrested or has been in jail. Books for this would need to be 150 pages or more.
Q: How do we decide a winner? Did I miss that part? Is there going to be a timeframe if a winner isn't decided?
A: Once all of the properties are owned, whoever owns the most properties wins.
Q: Are we using one die or two?
A: Two
Q: Is there a minimum page requirement for the novella when you are 'just visiting'?
A: I hadn't specified a page minimum on that, but I was thinking 50 pages.
Q: Say you own a property where you read 1 book to own and 2 if paying rent....
And you land on a property you already own...do you read 1 book as owner or do you have to read 2 as renter, even if it is your property?
A: when you own the property you're just visiting so you can read a book or not, it's up to you. But you can roll right away since you're not obligated to do anything.
Q: Let's say I rolled and landed on Vermont Avenue I read 1 book to own it, but 2 if it's already owned by somebody else? Or is it owned by the board?
A: the property isn't owned until either you or one of the people you are playing with reads 1 (or more depending on the property) books from the shelf associated with that property
Q: What to do when you land on Chance and get "Get out of Jail Free" card. Do I need to read something for this - it doesn't specify.
A: that's just a freebie. You don't have to read anything and now you have it in your arsenal if you land in jail.
Q: any pg requirement for the Railroads? Except for the novella one
A: We'll go 150 page limit for everything other than the novella. sorry I didn't post that. for novellas, we're going 25 page minimum unless otherwise stated.
Q: In the event that 2 players on the same team are playing for the same space and one finishes before the other, does the loser then have to read the extra books because the property is now owned in order to move on in the game?
A: You just have to read the one book.... To move and since you were there before anyone owned property, it is rent free this time...no extra books
Q: What's the definition for a book that someone thought stunk? A book that has someone who rated it 1 star or a book that consistently gets low ratings?
A: It could be either of those. Or if someone DNF'd it or a friend of yours told you it was bad. Just let us know where you got it from when you review it.
Q: what happens when we pass GO or land on it? I think I may be there on my next roll and want to double check.
A: Go is only if you land on it. Although maybe next time I might add it in as you have to do it when you pass it too. We'll see how things go and how everyone thinks things went this time.
Q: what happens if you roll doubles? Anything? Or just go on as normal?
A: Nothing happens with doubles. I totally forgot all about rolling doubles. At this point, it only means something if you're in jail.
Q: For the being in jail space, does it have to be the main character who is arrested or in jail? I would like to read The Murderer's Daughters, but it is the father of the main characters who is in jail and may be up for parole.
A: Not necessarily the main character, but a central character. I would think that the father of the main character is pretty central. Even if that person isn't in the book much, they are central to the main characters world.
Q&A: Also, it was asked in our game if you had to actually shed tears while reading a book for water works and actually crying isn't necessary. If you get choked up that works. You can reread a book that made you cry before. Or if you read a book that has made others cry that'll work too. I'm not all that emotional and it's really hard to actually make me shed tears, but I get choked up, get that tight feeling in my chest. I am going to make a judgement call and say that is what you need.
No blood, sweat or tears are necessary for the game, but if it happens, then that's cool...wait...not the blood part, but the sweat and tears part. ;-)
