Snakes and ladders Challenge

This is a reading challenge that will run from February 1st 2014 to February 28th 2014. Winners will be announced on March 1st 2014.

For this challenge we will have a snakes and ladders grid (below), which has squares of 5 different colours, numbered 1 to 100.

Books read will move you along the grid in 2 ways:
-The colour square will denote what genre of book you read,
-The number of pages will denote how many squares you move.

Coloured Squares:
Red Square - read a book with a red cover, or read a 'romance/realistic' book
Yellow Square - read a book with a yellow cover, or read a book that was submitted for the 'cover scavenger hunt'
White square - read a book with a white cover, or a 'dystopian/futuristic' book
Blue square - read a book with a blue cover, or a 'sci-fi/suspense' book
Green - read a book with a green cover, or a 'Paranormal/fantasy' book

Our guided buddy read for February These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) by Amie Kaufman is a wild card - this book can be used for any coloured square, and can count for between 1-5 moves - you decide how far this book will move you.

Number of Pages:
The number of pages in the book you are reading will denote how many squares you move along the grid. It is very important to take this into consideration to avoid hitting snakes and dropping down the grid.

page count:
100-199 pages - move 1 space
200-299 pages - move 2 spaces
300-399 pages - move 3 spaces
400-499 pages - move 4 spaces
500-599 pages - move 5 spaces
600-699 pages - move 6 spaces

Points can be earned like so:
1 point per book read and reviewed (review rules apply)
1 bonus point for each buddy read (buddy read rules apply)
1 point for each space moved along the grid (this will be calculated at the end, so if you have gotten to square 50, you will get 50 bonus points at the end)

Note:
-If you hit a snake you must go down it. this will decrease your bonus score at the end. please take this into account when planning which books to read.
-If you hit a ladder you must go up it, this will increase your final bonus score at the end, but may cause you to end the game prematurely. again, please take this into account when planning which books to read.
-buddy reads will gain you an extra point, but do not move you further along the grid
-books read must fit the square that you are on (you may choose to read a book and then submit its review later though when you need to play it for the square you are on)
-book covers must be 60% of one colour to qualify. Imagine that you are asked to draw a line around the coloured areas on the book - do they cover the majority of the book? please ask for confirmation if you are unsure at all.
-This game will require planning - you will need to plan which sort of books you will read, and how long they are to move you along the grid. If you are unsure if your book qualifies, or how many spaces it will move you, please ask.

There will be one winner who has the most points, and a second random winner ☺ Each will received 1 ebook of their choice from the Prize list: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Rules:
- books must qualify for the sqaure you are playing.
- books must be at least 100 pages in length
- up to 2 re-reads are allowed
- books must be read between February 1st and February 28th (inclusive)
You can find our regular challenge rules here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Sign ups and questions go in this thread, reviews go in the review thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Coloured covers - covers need to be 60% or more of one colour to count. Imagine that you are asked to draw a line around the coloured areas on the book - do they cover the majority of the book? please ask for confirmation if you are unsure at all.

blue covers - teardrop vs throne of glass
Teardrop (Teardrop, #1) by Lauren Kate= more than 60% blue
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas = less than 60% blue

According to goodreads and amazon it says 215, but then when i did a search it says that it's '175 pages 'pocket size''. Good luck to anyone who wants to read it, its over £100 for a used copy on amazon.co.uk!

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Question nr.2: do we start from point 1, as in we need to read a book from the yellow square? Or do we start with whatever book we want and based on our first book we get moved on the table? Example: if our first book is 100 pages, our second should be from the yellow square, if it's 200, the second should be from the white square and so on.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Ok, I just saw this:
Sarah wrote: "Square played: No 7 - White
Qualification: dystopian
Book Length: 487 pages
Squares moved: 4
New Square: No 11 - Red
Review: Link
Buddy: yes/no - link"
I think it gives an unfair advantage to the later players in the game. I'm nr.3 so I will start from that nr, while nr 25 will by start have a 2200 pages advantage over me. As in, I have to read that much just to get to him/her. I know there's the snakes and ladders thing, but let's face it, no one will read something that will get them to a snake.

Tessa -

Everyone starts from square 1- so everyone should be starting with a yellow square, which is either a book with a yellow cover, or one of the books from the scavenger hunt (which are listed above).

And you've lost me with your second question - everyone starts from square no 1, as you would if you were playing the game in real life. No-one will start with any advantage, or have to catch up to anyone else. The order in which you sign up has no bearing whatsoever. The review thread just shows an example of what I expect you to post when you post your review. I wasn't suggesting that someone was starting from no 7, that was just an example of a book that would qualify for that square, and how to put down how many squares you were moving etc. ☺

If anyone has an issue with finding a book for the first yellow space, please message me and we'll work something out.

message 32: by Tessa (new)

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Ok, I misunderstood, so first book I read should be either a book with a yellow cover, or a book that was submitted for the 'cover scavenger hunt'. :)
Also, it should be 300 pages if I want to get to that ladder? XD

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) Is the 15 and 16 boxes messed up?

Correct ☺
You can also use books that are in the same series as the books above, so for example if you wanted to read Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #3) by Maggie Stiefvater , that would be okay because Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater or its foreign cover equivalent Тръпка (Вълците от Мърси Фолс, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater is up there ☺

Oh, yeah, I didn't noticed that before. Same with 75 and 76, I think."

I think 75 and 76 are okay? the numbers go left to right, then the next row is right to left.

Oh, I misread the "75" to be 73. Sorry then.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Are poetry books accepted?
Just got this one as a present: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Excited to read it, but since it's poetry the 537 pages will feel something like 300 or less, I think.

Tessa (tessa_ioana) | 1861 comments Also, right now I'm reading some books, some of them I might finish in February. I want to know if the currently reading books count as well or only the ones we start reading from February the 1st.

message 48: by Kate (new)

Kate ★ (spillsandspoils) | 973 comments It said on the rules that :

books must be read between February 1st and February 28th (inclusive)

Kate is right, books started before February 1st won't count. It's the only way we can do it to be fair to everyone ☺
