Ice-breaker: come up with a team name!
Choose the name of a protagonist from a middle grade book to be your team name (example: Harry Potter).

zaiyah (skellyzelly) Jessica, can you ask on the Captains Chat if we can read books we've already read?

And names: Logan Sweet from The Candymakers (strongly recommend! This would probably fit somewhere in category two)

Or Leslie Burke from Bridge to Terabithia

Hey Zaiyah, I won’t normally check in to this chat page for your team but I just want to confirm you can read books you’ve already read before. As long as you start them when the challenge starts instead of before, then it’s fine👍🏻

message 6: by Dana (new)

Dana Cristiana (silvermoon1923) | 313 comments Just a quick question to make sure: we all have to read all of the books from all the tasks? Like as many as we can? Or each one of us has to read some of the tasks?

I'm not sure.

message 7: by Kadi, Creator (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 4284 comments Mod
You read as many books as you can. There’s no minimum or maximum. And you work as a team to complete tasks so:
If Person A completes Task 1, you cannot complete Task 1 as well; it’s already completed.

So yeah you all read some of the tasks. But you can’t have two people read the same task.

Have you checked out the tasks? They’re on the spreadsheet linked at the top of the page.

That's exactly what I wanted to know, if we can read what others in the team are reading but now I understood. Yes, I checked them out and they're amazing! Thank you so much for this challenge!

I'm so excited and can't wait to start reading! :*

zaiyah (skellyzelly) Thanks, Kadi! You're awesome!

Welcome guys!!❤️ Can’t wait to start! And I’m really glad you’re all liking the challenge!!!!!

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments Hey guys! Super excited for these challenges.
For the tasks that we already know about, let me know if you have any ideas for books that fit!
And we can keep each other updated on here on which task we'll be reading for so that we don't accidentally overlap.
I look forward to chatting and reading with y'all!

message 12: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments Also Zaiyah, I like Logan Sweet! I haven't read either of those but I think Logan Sweet has a good ring to it.

message 13: by zaiyah (last edited Jul 22, 2019 08:55PM) (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) Yeah, and he's such a great character!

Bliss would work for a baking scene (I loooove this book, I haven't reread it, but I really need to).

Crushing It works for six

A Day Of Signs And Wonders - 19

I just figured out that I have read 130 MG and MG+ books, so if you need to see any go to that shelf mg-mg-plus

I'm planning on going to the library tomorrow and finding a stack of books that'll work!

message 14: by Dana (new)

Dana Cristiana (silvermoon1923) | 313 comments Hello, team.

So, what I have found:

For task 21 (A book with a cover that is more than 50% blue): Raiders' Ransom by Emily Diamand or The Grave Digger by Rebecca Bischoff .

For task 22 (A book with a protagonist who has superpowers/special abilities) : The Rise of Winter by Alex Lyttle (there are many more who fit into this category).

For task 30 (A book with a protagonist who is a sleuth/detective): Ollie Oxley and the Ghost The Search for Lost Gold by Lisa Schmid

For task 31 (A book with a group of 5 or more friends) I found (in the synopsis), but I'm not 100% sure: Magdalena Gottschalk The Crooked Trail (Magdalena Gottschalk, #1) by M. Gail Grant .

For task 39 (A book with a protagonist who has an abstentee dad): Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows by J.M. Bergen

And for task 46 (A book that was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in the Middle Grade & Children's category) I found one nominated in 2017 that I own a physical copy of, and that is Wishtree by Katherine Applegate .

message 15: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments Awesome! My middle-grade experience is relatively limited, so I'll definitely be perusing your shelf, Zaiyah, lol. But here are a couple ideas:

For task 12 (a book with a cover that is more than 50% brown): The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan

Any of the Percy Jackson books work for tasks 17, 22, and 27. But we can still definitely go with The Rise of Winter for 22.

For task 36 (a book that is a sequel): The Elite (The Selection, #2) by Kiera Cass

message 16: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments Also, Kadi mentioned that if there's a book that works for multiple categories, we can use it for each category as long as it's not the same person reading it.

So, for example, if The Rise of Winter worked for task 22 and two other tasks, as long as three of us read the book then we could use it for the 3 different categories.

So we can see how many individual books we can find for the tasks and see how many overlap and determine what we want to do regarding that.

I think The Elite (The Selection, #2) by Kiera Cass is a Young Adult, not middle grade.

Ohh, now I saw that is considered as MG+, which is a bit weird, but nevermind that. :D

I thought it was weird too! There's a few books I saw on that site that were listed as middle grade that I thought was odd (like Thirteen Reasons Why). But that seems to be where they want to place it, so I dunno. And if it's listed as MG+ and fits the stipulations then might as well roll with it lol.

message 22: by Dana (new)

Dana Cristiana (silvermoon1923) | 313 comments Also, I want to ask something.

I have some ARCs from NetGalley that are middle-grade (some of the above mentioned as well) and I want to read some of those too, but when I search for them on that site, I can't find them. I don't understand why.

But as long as on Netgalley or Goodreads they are classified as middle-grade, can I still read them?

Maybe you can ask the moderator? I don't know where else I can adress these questions.

I just want to know if I can read those even though they don't appear on A book finder.

There are many books. Or maybe I have a problem and don't know how to use that site. :/

message 27: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments Kadi said that since both list them as middle-grade it's fine! You can still read those.

I think Logan Sweet is good!

message 30: by Elizabeth (last edited Jul 28, 2019 02:28PM) (new)

Elizabeth (elizabethkirkpatty) | 106 comments Here are some books that I found:

Task 2 (A book where the protagonist gets lost): Hatchet

Task 3 (A book that is set primarily on an island): Scar Island

Task 19 (A book with clouds on the cover): Just Under the Clouds

Task 21 (A book with a cover that is more than 50% blue): Wonder or Just Under the Clouds

Task 45 (A book with a character who wins a prize/award/medal): Wonder

If I find anymore I'll edit this comment.

message 32: by zaiyah (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) Should we make a document to organize everything? Everyone could just put down what would work for each task and you could claim the ones you want to read.

message 33: by zaiyah (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) And can we limit the spreadsheet to only us, because right now it's anyone with the link can edit

message 34: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments I was planning on working on something later this evening to kind of map out and keep everything organized for what we have so far.
and for the link she provided for the spreadsheet, that’s only for our team, not every team. unless you were talking about something else?

message 35: by zaiyah (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) No, anyone who sees the links can access it. Thos anonymous animal things, one was on earlier. If we got everyones' emails (if they were willing) we would be able to have that access limited to only Logan Sweet and Kadi.

I started working on one already -

I like the idea of having a document only our team can access, but I tried to click the link and I need permission to access it. I sent you a request for access. Hopefully, that'll work.

message 37: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments I requested access as well

message 38: by zaiyah (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) Sorry, I took a while, but I approved those and now we just need Dana. I think. Should we do that for the spreadsheet as well?

message 39: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments It looks great! Thanks so much for doing that.
And as in creating an additional spread sheet, different from the one Kadi created?

message 40: by zaiyah (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) No, just restricting the access to the people in our group. I already shared it with everyone except Dana cause I don't have her email.

message 41: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 684 comments Yah that definitely works.

message 42: by Kadi, Creator (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 4284 comments Mod
Hey guys,
If you like I can make the spreadsheet accessible to only your specific emails.
Do you want it to be only viewed by you guys or only edited by you guys? I left it open without restrictions because I thought people wouldn't want to give their emails and it just made it easier.
If you want it view only I'll remove the link from the top of the page so only you guys and I can access it to be able to see it. If you want it edit only I'll leave it at the top.
This just makes it easier for you guys so you don't have to create a new spreadsheet seeing as the main one links to the point spreadsheet I've created. It's up to you!

message 43: by zaiyah (new)

zaiyah (skellyzelly) We would only need Dana's email and then we could make it so it's only viewable by the people it's shared with, so then it's just our group, and you. If you did share it with Dana as well, that would be great.

Yep just need Dana's email. I'll private message her for it. I've removed the link from the top of this page but left a note to remind myself you guys still have access to it.
Feel free to personalise the spreadsheet however you like everyone! Just don't change the points coding😂

Also, just wanted to let you know that I won't usually check in on this page I just wanted to see if anyone had noticed I'd changed the name of the chat😂
