The Next Ship Home A Novel of Ellis Island by Heather Webb

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and Webb brings the era to life. I rooted for Alma and Francesca to succeed. Reading their stories, I want to give homage to my ancestors who passed through Ellis Island. Their courage afforded my family a better life.

Buzz Books 2022: Spring/Summer has a long list of books coming out this year, and it includes excerpts from many. Authors range from winners of the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes to debut authors new to the market. It's a great way to get a taste of what's out there.

Ray Moon | 9 comments Blackout by Simon Scarrow Blackout by Simon Scarrow
I'm just over 60% through, and this is an excellent read so far. A few very minor spoilers including that will not ruin your reading enjoyment.

The suspense is very strong and multifaceted. In 1939 Germany, Criminal Inspector Schrenke is under dire pressure from the Head of Gestapo to solve a politically charged murder immediately with very personal threats. The murderer tracked Schrenke and his girlfriend to where he lives. As the murder is also a rapist, Schrenke worries about his girlfriend. Lastly, his girlfriend is the niece of Admiral Caranis, head of Abwehr, military intelligence, who starts out sympathetic and supportive of Schrenke, but he has just shown a cold side and possibly dangerous side. So far two of the three attacks were described in the voice of the murderer. While very edgy they were not in an objectionable manner. If you want to read a strong mystery, thriller, and suspenseful novel, I recommend this one!

And this has been my problem also Rosh.!! Most historical fiction that I have tried recently has been either dry and boring, has too much romance that isn't an integral part of the story, or is another book about WWII. I used to read historical fiction almost exclusively but the great ones are hard to come by ;(

"Bloomsbury Girls" was the perfect read to usher in Women's History Month. Historical fiction fans will fall in love with the shopgirls' quest to achieve their dreams. Books like Jenner's give women a voice. Whether it's the past, present or future, by standing up and refusing to accept the status quo, women are forging their own paths to achieve equality.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Facts and Other Lies: Welcome to the Disinformation Age, by Aussie author Ed Coper, is just as unnerving as you probably gather it is from the title. The current division in many democracies has been caused by bad actors with thousands of automatic bots that set us off down fake rabbit holes. Started with the printing press, escalated to social media.

You may be sent one way, while I'm sent another. CLASH! If democracies crumble, guess what happens next?!

The Best Is Yet to Come by Debbie Macomber

Macomber masterly weaves stories together and makes readers question how we judge people at face value. Cade gives a voice to the soldiers that return home and are unable to assimilate back into society. Whether veterans are facing pain, rage or trauma, Macomber's poignant story illustrates that compassion and kindness goes a long way to facilitate healing rather than locking it away.
