Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Finished this one a week or so ago. I had to force myself to finish it. Stealing Infinity by Alyson Noël Stealing Infinity (Stolen Beauty, #1) by Alyson Noel 1 Star

I was feeling guilty 'cause I've DNF a few from NetGalley already, but I wasted so much time reading it, and avoiding it. Worse yet, doing so sucked some of my excitement to read anything.

I have got to push those feelings aside. If I have to force myself, I need to give it up.

Now reading Wild is the Witch by Rachel Griffin Wild is the Witch by Rachel Griffin

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Not NetGalley but it's an ARC worth sharing.

Leavers, Schoolies, Spring Break - whatever you call it when kids on the brink of adulthood take off on their own - parents hope for the best.

Guess what? Town destination refused entry, so where to go? The Brink, Brink Island, an isolated island off the coast of Western Australia, of course. Western Australian author Holden Sheppard understands this place and these kids.
The Brink by Holden Sheppard 4★My review of The Brink

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 21 comments Upgrade by Blake Crouch Upgrade by Blake Crouch

I hadn't originally intended to read this. But I ended up doing so because I had I received an invitation from the publisher. This was very good, and I need to prioritize more sci-fi thrillers.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments I love it when a favourite author is convinced to continue a story. Lying Beside You is celebrated Aussie mystery writer Michael Robotham's excellent addition to the Cyrus Haven (& Evie Cormac) series. But you can pick it up and enjoy the suspense and action straight away, because Robotham will fill you in.
Lying Beside You (Cyrus Haven, #3) by Michael Robotham 5★ My review of Lying Beside You

Dorie, I can't see the title or the author on the tiny cover picture, and I can't hover over it on my phone. Can you just write the names of the books if you can't link them? Makes it so much easier! I always enjoy your reviews, but I don't usually check them unless I know what the book is (when I'm on my laptop and can 'hover'). 😊

Was a lot better than watching a reality TV show, or going to a bar to watch it live. But wasn't that great of a story.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments My Name Is Yip by Paddy Crewe is the off-beat 'memoir' of a most unusual character. Yip is like no one I've ever met (or am likely to meet), and I loved the way he told his story of early nineteenth century America.

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Tinderbox Tinderbox by W.A. Simpson could have been a good story but the writing fell short. Wasn't descriptive enough to keep me intersted. 2 Stars

Up next, The Heretic Royal The Heretic Royal (The Scarred Earth Saga, #3) by G.A. Aiken

message 3027: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Jess Kidd has taken the difficult history of the 17th century Dutch ship 'Batavia' and tied it to a contemporary Australian story through two wonderful nine-year-old children. The Night Ship is well-researched and beautifully written, with a little bit of magical realism readers should love.
The Night Ship by Jess Kidd 4★ My review

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments The Heretic Royal The Heretic Royal (The Scarred Earth Saga, #3) by G.A. Aiken was a big disappointment. I could only give it 2 stars... The other 2 books in the series got 4 and 5 stars. This one, while it moved quickly, nothing happened. I kept waiting and nothing....

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments I loved The Secret Life of Birds by Moira Butterfield. it is an entertaining delight for kids and their grown-ups. The fact that it's full of information doesn't hurt either (meaning I learned things 😊).
The Secret Life of Birds by Moira Butterfield 5★ My review with several illustrations

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Stopped reading The Spear Cuts Through Water at 7%. It starts off in 2nd person, and there's nothing that pulled me in. No descriptions and no action. But even when the 'main' story started, in those first few 'pages' there still wasn't anything that grabbed me.
There were still no real descriptions. Not enough details for my little brain. I hated to do it, but Will Not Finish.

In the Shadow Garden In the Shadow Garden by Liz Parker is next on my list.

message 3032: by Amy (new)

Amy | 145 comments The War Librarian by Addison Armstrong

The War Librarian by Addison Armstrong

Historical fiction transports readers into the past and unlocks portions of history. Addison Armstrong pens a novel that straddles the line between 1918 and 1977 where women are thrust into war while fighting against prejudice.

As pieces of the dual-linear puzzle emerge, the stories intertwine. Will the price of glory be too expensive to pay to survive? I love historical fiction and Armstrong's novel is one of the best books I've read this year. Filled with courage, determination and second chances, readers will step into the past to appreciate the future.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments The Partisan has everything: hot war, cold war, spies, assassins, history, and real people who fight, love, and care. It's hard to believe it's Patrick Worrall's debut novel. A great story about a dark time in Europe.
The Partisan by Patrick Worrall 5★ My review

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Storm and Flame Storm and Flame Enchanted I by Mallory Wanless was an okay of a read. I gave it a low 3 stars. More descriptions would've helped this story.

Now reading One Dark Window One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig , and I'm already 1/2 through and I'm liking this one! The author really thought this one out!

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments One Dark Window One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig was great, 4 stars, but it was also one of the worst types of cliffhangers, and there was nothing to alert the reader that it was going to be a series.

Up next, Wrath Wrath by Sharon Moalem , a book I've had since April, but it's not set for publication until October.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments John Boyne finally wrote an adult sequel to his much-loved The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and it is terrific! All the Broken Places is older sister Gretel's 'autobiography' from when she was the 12-year-old daughter of a Nazi officer, then passing as French in Australia, and finally to the age of 92 in London. What a story!
All the Broken Places by John Boyne 5★ My review of All the Broken Places

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Elizabeth Strout's Lucy Barton returns in her new book, Lucy by the Sea, where ex-husband William takes her to Maine to escape the pandemic which has brought New York City to its knees. It's American, real and current, but the relationship strengths and strains go beyond geographical boundaries and times. Families are families. Neighbours are neighbours.
Lucy by the Sea (Amgash, #4) by Elizabeth Strout 5★ My review of Lucy by the Sea

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Wrath Wrath by Sharon Moalem went where you'd think it would go, and it wasn't that great. Got boring towards the end.

Now reading Desert Creatures Desert Creatures by Kay Chronister , and it's even worse. Very disappointed in this one. The book cover and blurb are the only things good about it. I would give up, but I'm almost done. (Didn't have a backup at work so I was stuck with it on break.)

Up next is Big Bad Big Bad by Lily Anderson . They were nice enough to approve me Friday (16), but it comes out on the 27. grrr.

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Yeah, Desert Creatures Desert Creatures by Kay Chronister
