Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Hex You by P.C. & Kristin Cast Hex You by P.C. Cast , the final book in the Sisters of Salem series was ok but not as good as the House of Night. Even though it's aimed at YA, it's not suitable for readers under 14. Major, and very inappropriate, adult content was in the first book, and it is referred to in this book.

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments Think Harry Potter with vampires instead of wizards, but with some sexual descriptions of young adults.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Why would a nurse who is highly sought-after by an attentive, handsome, wealthy doctor ask to Make Me Disappear? This is Jessica Payne's debut thriller, and I think many thriller readers will enjoy it.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Wilma Mankiller was some woman! Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara picked a remarkable Cherokee woman who rose from 'dirt-poor' to represent her Nation. It's another excellent addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS collection. I'm so glad I met her in this little book.

Hijab Butch Blues: A Memoir Hijab Butch Blues: A Memoir by Lamya H

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In this beautifully written memoir, you will find a meticulously woven tapestry of warm childhood memories, personal growth and coming of age intertwined with a relatable read of stories in the Quran. The author's voice is clear and gives a portrait of a complex, self-conscious, strong and compassionate person. Near the end of the book is a valuable analogy of the whale that sheltered the prophet Yonus and about picking one's fights as holding space to protect oneself:

"A whale that allows me to keep fighting, to fight with my writing. A whale that allows me to save my energy for curious, kind dialogue and to support those I love -- instead of fighting to fend off racists, sexists, homophobes, transphobes, Islamophobes who could look up where I live, where I work, who and what I hold dear."

She describes a journey to hold onto her family of origin by holding onto her religious values and creating her own chosen tribe and family who reflect back her integrity as a queer person. I wasn't able to put this book down once I picked it up -- and look forward to more from Lamya H.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments Outstanding. Thirty years after she won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Annie Proulx turned her passion for the natural world into an essay project that became Fen, Bog and Swamp: A Short History of Peatland Destruction and Its Role in the Climate Crisis.

She means it, and she's right: “In the end all humans will be ‘haunted by waters.’

The Tragedy of Madagascar: An Island Nation Confronts the 21st Century by Nathaniel Adams. A historical, political, and economic look at the past, present, and future of the Great Island. PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments I love Garry Disher's rural Australia, but he doesn't pull any punches about life being less than idyllic in Day's End, #4 of his Paul Hirschhausen series. Demoted to a one-cop town, Hirsch has to deal with the same evildoers as his city counterparts - but on his own. Good solid read!

Billie's Not So Secret Diary (billiesnotsosecretdiary) | 257 comments VenCo by Cherie Dimaline VenCo wasn't that great. The blurb sounded interesting but the story/writing/progression didn't reach the mark at all. Slow and dragged on and on and on.....

Darya Silman (geothepoet) Walk Through Fire The Train Disaster That Changed America by Yasmine Ali
Walk Through Fire: The Train Disaster That Changed America by Yasmine Ali (publication: February 2023). It reminds me of the TV show 'Five Days at Memorial,' with characters' movements tracked down to a minute. The book talks about a freight train derailment in Waverly, Tennessee, in 1978 that resulted in the massive explosion of transported propane. The author is a local whose parents, doctors, treated the wounded. Though I haven't finished the book, I'll already think of giving it 5 stars. It deserves to be made into a documentary.

PattyMacDotComma | 621 comments I recently read a most unusual, longish Amazon short story set in rural Germany in 1945, near the end of WW2. The Wehrwolf by Alma Katsu is as creepy as it sounds. It is a fable of sorts - what lengths would you go to in desperation? It's an appropriate read for spooky October.
