Why we watch
As a book author, I’m not supposed to ever say anything good about television. Books are good. Television is bad. End of story.
But I won’t say that. Because I’ve spent a good part of the last week planted in front of the television. The Olympics are on, and man, I love the Olympics.
And last night, [...]

Belly Up hits 500 on Goodreads
Belly Up hit a milestone this week. It passed 500 reviews on Goodreads, which is now basically the premiere book reviewing website. Now, 500 reviews might not seem like that many compared to, say, ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ (1.2 million ratings), but then, that book has been out for 15 years and Belly [...]

Farewell, Donald J. Sobol
There’s a lot of other things I ought to be doing today, but I need to pay homage to one of the most influential writers in my life who passed away yesterday: Donald J. Sobol, creator of the Encyclopedia Brown series.
I devoured those books as a kid. It’s quite possible that I love mysteries so [...]

Canadian megafauna!
The family and I are just back from an awesome trip to the Canadian Gulf Islands. (That’d be the little bits of Canada in between Victoria Island and the mainland in southwestern British Columbia). While most of the USA was bursting into flame, we were nice and cool — and for the most part, quite [...]

Spy Camp sneak preview!
First of all, in case you couldn’t tell from the title of this post, the title of Spy School 2 is now officially SPY CAMP.
Second, the cover is done. My absolutely incredible designer, Lucy Cummins, nailed it on her first try. If you though the cover for Spy School was great, check this out:
So, now [...]

Father’s Day
Dashiell brought home a book he’d made at school for Father’s Day. Honestly, I can’t think of a better present than this.
By the way, we finished reading Spy Camp at breakfast this morning. Dash says it’s better than Spy School.

Author Fair in Manhattan Beach, CA
[ June 15, 2012; 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. ] The fine folks at the Barnes & Noble in Manhattan Beach California have invited me back for another author fair. This one's going to be pretty big, with nine authors -- yes, that's right, nine authors. I'm not sure who all the other authors are, but I believe that Derek the Ghost, author of Scary [...]

Official Cool Dad Status
I will fully admit that I started writing middle grade fiction, in part, so that I would be cool to my children.
Now, in the pantheon of cool jobs, ‘middle grade fiction author’ is still well below ‘astronaut,’ ‘fireman’ and ‘quarterback,’ but still, it was the best I could do.
And for quite some time, I don’t [...]

And the best thing is…
Lots of good stuff has been happening lately:
I have finished writing Spy School 2 (now called ‘Spy Camp.’) The first draft of the cover has come in and its fantastic (though I can’t quite share it with you yet).
Spy School and Belly Up have been selling well.
The Last Musketeer just came out in paperback.
