I vastly enjoyed the Mortal Instruments series, but it irked me to find out there were more - about six in all by the time she completes it, I believe, because I could have lived with the unanswered questions at the end of "The City of Glass", but now I have to wait for more...

Vishnu, there are just so many novels out there, and it depends on what you'd like to read. For example, if you like Greek mythology, I would have to recommend Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It may not seem so well knit as you start the series, but it comes together and leaves you desperate for more. If you want a twist on vampire novels, you could try the House of Night series, or Vampire Academy, and so many others. If you want a well-written and sad story, but don't want to read it for a week, try Bridge to Terabithia. Some of my personal favorites are the Seven Realms, Inheritance and Mortal Instruments series. Post if you like some or all of these, or to tell me to never offer you suggestions again ;). Good luck.

I'm ecstatic to see a review that comes across as "Preference" instead of "I like this one, burn that one." I enjoyed both series, and have in fact read both several times. I can not say the same for The Chronicles of Narnia, but I did get through it, and it wasn't bad, just not my kind of story, I guess. The same goes for The Alchemist - it just couldn't hold my attention. I'm thinking I'll go back and try to read it again, to see if I like it better after the first book.

message 304: by William (new)

William I guess I'm a member now and can post here. I'm glad I ran across this website. I've read a number of these books listed here, but I'm an old guy (73) and I go back a ways and most of my favorites come from back when we lived in caves and wore animal skins. But I have to say the Harry Potter Series are just about the top of the list with me. I write novels myself and have for about half a century,(The Secret Club, soon to be listed as an ebook on Lulu.com) What I'm most happy to find here is that young people are READINS! I think any book you like is a good book. - William

Xoey Twilight isn't necessarily stupid because it always depend on personal taste. Twilight is easier to read because of the lack of vocabulary and may appear to be really good to those who like gushy, poorly written, cheesy stuff.
Harry Potter is a lot more action-packed and mind-twisting and interesting, for the people who enjoy books with a better writing style.

That's my opinion anyways.

message 310: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Twilight is PATHETIC. No good plots, no good ideas, no good morals. Whatever happened to 'don't judge a book by its cover?' how likely is it that a normal girl, will find a vampire that worships the ground that she walks on. Harry Potter has a stead plot. it makes SENSE. twilight is just a thriller, thrilling the senses.

message 311: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Why even compare Harry Potter and Twilight? They have nothing to do with one another besides being hugely successful. It's like comparing Twilight with The Shining, it makes no sense.
I'm just tired of Twilight as a whole.

message 312: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Lee Hunger games has more voters than twilight! ha twilights at number four

message 313: by Addy (new)

Try reading the Iron Fey Series by Julie Kagawa. Its pretty awesome:)

message 325: by Lynette (new)

Lynette One of the best dystopian book series is Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking trilogy. The first book, "the Knife of Never Letting Go" may take 50-80 pages to get into, but then...there you go! The next two books just get better. "The Ask and the Answer" is book two and "Monsters of Men" book three. I am a high school librarian, and can not keep this series on the shelf. Great read for young men and young women.

Harry Potter will NEVER get old:) It's Timeless! Twilight is just a fad that will probably end in about 2 years (if that) I have never read Twilight but I have seen the first movie and my friends have told me what happened... I dont know maybe the books are good but if someone told me what HP was about and then what Twilight was about then I would get in the car to buy The Sorcerers Stone:)

Amy I've noticed several books on the list that aren't YA books, though some are now assigned reading in Middle and High schools. Watership Down, Ender's Game, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Lord of the Flies are some examples.

Sadly, Twilight has a huge following outside the teen set. It greatly saddens me that it's on this list. As Stephen King said, "Harry Potter is about the importance of doing the right thing, Twilight is about the importance of having a boyfriend."

message 347: by Vanessa (new)

Her stuff is definitely directed at adults. Often very sexual, especially the Mayfair Witches books.
