Keith Mclean | 1 comments Hey,

My name is Keith. I am from Canada. I am pursuing an IT degree, but I am passionate about history and philosophy. My main interest is 18th century European, especially French, history; however, I am willing to read well written history books outside of that time and place. I am reading the following:

God's Crucible Islam and the Making of Europe, 570-1215 by David Levering Lewis

It's slow at the start, but becomes enthralling after the Islamic occupation of Spain. The most recent chapters I've read, dealing with the machinations of the Popes and the rise of Charlemagne, have been excellent.

Alisa (mstaz) Welcome Keith, we are glad to have you as a member. Good attempt with the book citation. You have the cover, just need to add the author photo and links. You will pick it up quickly but let us know if you need a hand.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how the book you mentioned should look:

Dave | 2 comments Hello, I'm Dave. I'm retired and live in the Pittsburgh metro area.

I have a lot of interest and a little knowledge about a variety of historical topics. I've recently been paying a lot of attention to the Age of European Expansion, WWs 1 & 2, the American & Russian Civil Wars and the Seven Years/French and Indian conflicts with particular interest in non-battle aspects such as politics and logistics.

At some point in the near future I'd like to get more into East Asian and Sub Saharan topics.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Lori Hi all. I think I introduced myself a few months ago, but just in case . . .
I'm Lori and I live in the heart of Silicon Valley, but I am not a computer programmer. I've been away from the group for a few months but hope to come back and comment on the Woodrow Wilson bio.

My big project right now is reading the annotated Marco Polo with some really good maps and using the internet to understand what the various place names mean.

I particularly like economic world history and times of transition (e.g. classic to medieval).

Sherry (directorsherry) | 129 comments Hi All,
I have been reminded, gently that I must introduce myself to become a full fledged member of this club. I thought I had done it months ago, but apparently not! I am very happy to be here. I have always loved history -- especially Theatre History. In particular, Shakespeare and Chekhov -- and therefore Russian History. One of my favorite genres is Historical Fiction. I also enjoy historical non fiction especially when it is well written, and is well and acurately researched. I have already enjoyed participation in the Presidents discussion -- starting with Thomas Jefferson and now halfway through the Woodrow Wilson discussion. In the world I teach acting and theatre. I also write musical theatre.

Pradeep Jayatunga (pravan) | 52 comments Hi, I'm Pradeep Jayatunga, a lawyer and a history buff from Sri Lanka. I used to read almost anything I get my hands on provided I had at least a rudimentary understanding of the subject. Since I don't have enough time now to read everything, I go for my favourite areas - Greek, Roman and British history. Favourite historical fiction cover Roman, Scottish and English histories. I'm also into crypto-zoology, wild life, dogs, archaeology, warfare and other similar subjects. I read thrillers and comics too.

message 330: by Jesper (last edited May 21, 2013 01:37AM) (new)

Jesper Jorgensen (jespercfs2) Hi, Jesper checking in

My father, who was a history teacher in prime school, stimulated my interest in history from very early in my childhood. (As well as my sons ditto. If everything goes as planned and the marks can carry him he will study history at the university of Copenhagen from next year :-)

My main area of interest is combat aviation 1935 - 1975 with focus on WWII and the Vietnam War. (And with naval aviation as my favorite subject)

I am not 'padlocked' to those subjects though. The German occupation of Denmark is something I read fairly much about as well as the Cold War, politics and smaller armed conflicts in the period.

Actually anything that tickles my curiosity in what I read, see mentioned in e.g. magazines or see here at Goodreads ;-)

I'm 50, live in Denmark, am in my 23rd year of marriage, the proud father of 2 'kids' (18 & 15) and work as Customer Service rep in a major rolling bearing company

Take care

Andrea Torre (andtorg) | 1 comments Hi,
I'm Andrea and live in Italy. I'm a business intelligence developer. I have been an enthusiast reader, since my teen years, ranging from classic novels to science fiction.

I have always been thinking about history as the sum of facts that shaped modern society, so I read dozens of books, though without a conscious plan.

From time to time I feel curiousity about a specific period, and now it's the moment of American civil war.

As the amount of pages written about it is overwhelming, I would be very grateful if someone could suggest me a couple of good titles to start exploring.

I look forward to your replies. Many thanks in advance.

Andrea
