Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Welcome Heather. This is the place for all things history. Please note in the paragraph below the book citation guidelines and I have used the books you mentioned as examples.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how the books you mentioned should look:

Lyndon B. Johnson Portrait of a President by Robert Dallek by Robert Dallek Robert Dallek

(no image) The Coming of the Third Reich by Richard J Evans (no photo)

A gentle welcome for Heather,

It is part of our rules and guidelines - glad you got it (smile) and we have found that folks who do not introduce themselves do not do well here because they never get involved in the book discussions or ask for assistance.

There is a lot here aside from military.

Heather, rules and guidelines vary from group to group on goodreads and it is always good to make sure that you check because what one group requires another group does not.

It is like being in your living room and being able to visit 100 different countries without leaving your house which have various rules, procedures and orientations. It gets confusing and that is why this group is well moderated and tries to lead the way. Other groups do not have active moderation and things are more laissez-faire.

If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.

Welcome to the group, Matt.

We are happy to have you with us. What a nice introduction. Thank you for taking the time to compose a good brief expression of why you like history and why you joined our group.

You must be one of our youngest members. If you need any assistance you only have to ask for help from any one of the moderators.

Also, we ask that you check with your parents and make sure that it is OK for you to be on goodreads and in this group.

This is a public group and you are very welcome to be here but we want to make sure that you check with them as to the appropriateness of any of our discussions that may focus on World War I or II or any of a variety of subjects that I think you would be interested in that deal with World conflicts or military history.

You are in good company here and if you look around you'll see we have threads on current events, politics, economic history as well as many other historical topics and quite a few on military history which you love.

We also have a folder on a variety of sports and we'd be thrilled for you to contribute there as well.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. Hi Everyone,
I thought I had introduced myself a good while back when I originally joined the group, but just to make sure (and introduce myself to anyone who has joined since) here's a brief intro about myself. My name is Steven Harbin. I'm an educator in an alternative school in the southeastern United States. I was a high school history teacher back in the 1980's. I've always loved history, ever since I started reading Landmark books about ancient history back in elementary school in the 1960's. I'm interested in just about all eras and areas of history, but presently I've been reading a good deal the 17th and 18th century World and American history. I've loved this group ever since I joined, and enjoy the group reads.

message 507: by Rosa (new)

Rosa Rose | 1 comments Hi! I am Rosa Sala Rose, born in Barcelona (Spain) from a German mother and a Spanish father. I am a free-lance writer of historical essays, so I am naturally interested on history, mainly German history of the 19th and 20th centuries. I am especially keen on whatever relates Nazism with the history of mentalities and culture. I try to read as much as I can about these topics. I also love autobiographies, diaries and memories by people who have been living in Germany during the first half of the 20th century, since autobiographical writings are often an amazing source of unconventional historical knowledge.

message 508: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (gatsbyoldsport) | 1 comments Hi everyone, my name is Stacie. I am 20 years old and from the United States. I am currently majoring in Health Care Administration at a local university. I also love to read, especially those books involving history. I read history books of any kind, but the ones that I am most interested occur during the 20th century. The last couple of history books I've read were about WWII and John F. Kennedy. The things that I love most about history is learning about what it was like during that period of time and what people had to experience.

message 509: by Paul (new)

Paul Pensom | 1 comments Hello all. I joined this group some time ago and am responding to your understandable request for members to introduce themselves.

My name is Paul from London, England. I'm a designer by trade, and originally from Birmingham (England again, not Alabama!). My father seriously considered teaching history in his youth, which perhaps explains why as long as I can remember I've not been able to pass so much as a doorway without stopping to ponder its past.

My historical reading has ranged widely over the years, from a childhood obsession with the Victorians, (Heaven's Command: An Imperial Progress by Jan Morris for instance), to 20th century conflicts (The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich 1 by William L. Shirer), to more recently an exploration of the Classical age (for instance Persian Fire: The First World Empire and the Battle for the West by Tom Holland).

In short, I'm endlessly curious, and will pick up almost any history book. My only problem is finding the time.

Kim Turney Hi! Kim Turney here. I joined this group because I have become a History Fanatic. I am a Sword Master in the film industry - basically I teach and perform fake fights for a living. Part of being a sword master is understanding historical time periods and the weapons that go with them. I am also really interested in WWI and WWII, mostly for studying and trying to comprehend why people made the decisions they made that lead the world to war in the first place. I find it fascinating. I look forward to all the discussions here.
Cheers!

This is Claire Englewood's intro minus those section we do not allow because of our rules and guidelines regarding self promotion.

Hello, everyone. I'm Claire Englewood, a retired Human Resources professional, living in Maryland, .........

I've been a history buff all my life and love that retirement lets me indulge in reading, researching, college classes and genealogy.

I'm hoping to do a master's degree in European History if I can qualify for some funding. Right now my research is very focused on Middle Europe, 1848-1950 but I also read a lot about the Plantagenets, American History (especially Presidents from Lincoln through FDR), Crime History, emigration patterns or diaspora issues, Jewish history, and serial killers. Don't try to pin me down!

My name is David. I enjoy reading history books that cover relatively narrow topics rather than books the cover major events. I enjoy the little details about individual personalities. I work as an economist and as such enjoy reading history books related to socio-economic development. Recently, I have been interested in reading modern history. Currently, I am reading

Collapse of an Empire Lessons for Modern Russia by Yegor Gaidar by Yegor Gaidar Yegor Gaidar

My particular areas of research have been Women's History (U.S. and British) and British history through 1600 but more recently I have been getting excited about the 18th century and German and Nordic history.

Thanks for adding me to the group! I look forward to being introduced to historical topics with which I am less familiar.

My name is Fred, I'm 20 years old. I've set a goal for myself recently, which is why I joined goodreads. I plan to read 20 books over the next 1-2 years from a variety of places. I want to be able to know a little bit about every region of the world. I've started my collection with 2 books on the fall of old mexico, one on the balkans since 1453, and one which is an overview of German history.

My favorite places to study about are Central and Eastern Europe, Spain, and Mexico.

Also, I am obsessed with basketball and love the history of it! Especially the 40's-early 70's.

David......it is not necessary to put up the avatar if the author photo is not available. Just the link and the notation (no photo).
It will become second nature after a few tries.

I am primarily interested in history as presented in memoirs. I firmly believe that personal accounts of history give us a multi-faceted colorful knowledge of events not found in official history books which do not allow insight into how wars affected people who actually lived them. This holds true whether we read about the American Civil War, the Tsar's downfall in Russia as experienced by my mother, the refugee and Holocaust children in the European Sector during WWII, or the tortuous journey of the Lost Boys of Sudan. America truly is a melting pot and we need to know the true ingredients that make up the recipe for a great nation.

I'm afraid I'd best "unjoin." I am so busy writing that I don't have time to participate.

For the sake of adding something to the discussion, I've found that fiction set within the context of historical events is often the most illuminating. Life (childbirth, old people trying to cope with painful joints, getting food) takes on Herculean tasks in times of war.

I am working on three new works of historic fiction and of course as an author I spend a good deal of time with my head buried in non-fiction work or primary source doing research.
When I'm not writing or doing military work I look forward to fishing and hunting with my children and prowling around the Adirondack Mountains. Look forward to participating as life allows!Sea of Gray: The Around-The-World Odyssey of the Confederate Raider ShenandoahEnduranceDog Company SixJohn Adams

Welcome, Leif.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. It also helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how a book you might mention should look:

A People's Tragedy A History of the Russian Revolution by Orlando Figes by Orlando Figes Orlando Figes
