Mike (shooteyeout) | 1 comments Hello,

My interest in history is not traditional American or European. I have been interested in the history of Central Asia since I was 11 years old and read my first book about Chinggis Khan. I would much rather visit Kabul and Samarkand than London or Paris any day.

message 407: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Welcome, Mike. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Katie del Rosario (athenakt) Hello, all. My name is Kate. I'm from the United States and although I currently live in Seattle, my husband, daughter, and I are in the process of moving back to the NYC area. I studied history in college, mainly focusing upon American women's history in the 17th and 18th century, but my interests are very broad. I am a non-fiction editor and photo researcher, specializing in children's non-fiction--especially history.

I'm hoping to pursue my masters degree in history within the next couple of years and eventually get an MLS. It's been a few years since I was seriously involved with the field, so I'm looking forward to jumping back in.

I hope to learn a lot from the group and to find some great new sources. Thanks, everyone!

Best,
Kate

Lisa | 1 comments Hi
My name is Lisa. My home is New York, but I find myself overseas more than not. I work in management, providing support for new systems thinking. I love history and historical fiction. Strangely obsessed with UK history, only recently have I took a long look at my own. I think, when you are away from home, the heart seeks out your own roots for comfort. I'm in the UK at the moment, so my head is rarely out of a book concerning the US. Two favorite periods at the moment: UK, sixteenth/seventeenth century histories and fictions, and US, the civil war.

Doreen Hi, my name is Wanda, and I live in Southern California with my cat and books. I am reading a lot more non-fiction nowadays, and your group looks wonderful. Recent history I have read and loved: both of Candace Millard's recent books (River of Doubt and Destiny of the Republic), and also several books about art fraud..The Gardner Heist and Provenance are recent readings. Hoping to get a lot more recommendations and take part in your in depth discussions.

To respond to your post, I clicked on "add a comment" directly under your post...which brings up a blank screen with "cancel" at the top left and "done" at the top right....nothing anywhere about add book/author etc.......

Exactly, Wanda, no worries. We find the app pretty poorly designed. I am wishing for a major update.

message 424: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sistrwmn) Hello, my name is Sharon. I joined this group because I needed a way to find more good history books. I started reading biographies when I was seven, then moved onto WWII and the Nazis by 10. That is my most studied part of history, but I would like to branch out. For instance, up until about 2 years ago, I didn't know Rome had burned.... awkward. :) Looking forward to many great reads in the future.

Charlene (drchar) | 2 comments Hi Everyone,

I'm Charlene. My motivation for joining this group is to get good book recommendations. I'm trying to venture out of my sci-fi/fantasy reading rut into more nonfiction. I'm embarrassed to say that I'm incredibly ignorant when it comes to U.S. history and need some U.S. history book recommendations that are not dry and uninteresting!

Adrian Clark (aydreean) | 1 comments Hello Everyone,
My name is Adrian. I am a 22 year old recent university graduate with a degree in history from Eastern Michigan University. I'm hoping to go on to grad school to be able to work in a historical library, archive, or museum. Teaching would be incredible as well. My main interests and area of focuses are labor relations and "class conflicts" in early 20th century United States, as well as contemporary Latin America.

Hopefully this group can help me with my reading and study. I regretfully didn't read much during my undergrad and I feel bad about it now. :-/. Hopefully I'll also be able to contribute some things as well.

message 432: by Marata (new)

Marata | 3 comments I was asked to introduce myself and I thought I had months ago. I have a hard time knowing what to do in Goodreads...LOL I get notices and never know what to do about the info. I am of an age, born in San Francisco. Was there through all the fun in the 1960's. Was bored with school but love learning and ended up working 30 years in K-8th hoping to make school a nice experience for students. Retired now with part of my time spent reading and playing on the computer. I am reading Coming into the Country by John McPhee right now and it is really enjoyable but slow. The book was written 1976 so there is some newer and older history in it, everything changes so quickly that some parts of the book seems old hat. I am always interested in books people read and what the books are about. Right now I use Goodreads as a resource for what to read and what is going on in the book world.

message 435: by Robert (new)

Robert Hoffman | 6 comments Greetings fellow history geeks.

I truly believe that the best stories ever told are the real deals, and the best characters ever created were born the old-fashion way, ie, the birth canal. :)

Thus, I read history.

I enjoy living in an area just overflowing with history (Washington DC metro area). When people cynically ask what of value Washington has ever produced, I say the Redskins and history. And more of the latter gets produced each year.

Thus, I appreciate history.

Yes, I am partial to my country's history, but enjoy a great story of interesting people making extraordinary decisions, individually or collectively, regardless of geography or nationality. Individuals like Jefferson, Burke, Gandhi, Lincoln, and Joan of Arc teach us not just about themselves but about ourselves - their lessons are timeless and provide us a chance to discover and rediscover.

Thus, history is an adventure that never ends.

And just as fun as reading history is sharing history - discussing, debating, challenging, and prodding points of view, which can add more dimension, context and occasionally absurdity to what is read. It's all good.

Thus, I joined Goodreads.

Robert

Batgrl (Book Data Kept Elsewhere) (goodreadscombatgrl) | 1 comments Hello there! (Thanks for the reminder message to introduce myself, Bentley!) I'm one of those lurking types - but although I'm not particularly good at jumping in on the conversations here (I have had bad habit of getting side tracked by stopping to look up books/authors), just wanted to pass along how much I appreciate them. My list of To Reads has gotten much, much longer thanks to some of the discussions here.

I joined because I do miss having the book recommendations that were so easy to get at school - and it's always nice to find people passionate about the subject.

Ann Talbot | 1 comments Hi,
I'm an archaeologist and historian interested in early modern Europe and it's connections with non-European countries. I did my PhD in the influence of travel literature on the work of the philosopher John Locke. At the moment I'm teaching English in China which is useful for learning more about the influence that Chinese philosophy might have had on the European Enlightenment. But I'd say I'm interested in all areas of history.
