Vizara | 4 comments Hi All,
My name is Vizara and I'd like to introduce myself. I was born in Indonesia, grew up in Africa (Rhodesia & Nyasaland) but am now located in the Netherlands, where I work as an anesthesiologist. Have always been interested in history, main interests being Greek and Roman history (having studied Greek and Latin at school), Middle Ages (UK) and WW1 and WW2 (my family were all in POW camps in the Far East). Am also interested in the Middle East and Africa.
Have visited battlefields in France (WW1 and WW2) and in South Africa (Boer War).
Hope to visit the Imperial War Museum south of Cambridge next month.

Hope to learn a lot in this group.

Vizara

Alisa (mstaz) Welcome Vizara, we are glad to have you as a member. With your interests you are surely to find many discussions and book recommendations of interest. We hope you participate in the conversations found here.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post . Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

The Nine Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court by Jeffrey Toobin by Jeffrey Toobin Jeffrey Toobin

One of my goals is to take an adventure through American history by reading one biography/autobiography on each U.S. President in chronological order, and I'm hoping to get some great suggestions from this group. Looking forward to other great suggestions, as well! Thanks for having me!

Mimi V (naomi_v) | 47 comments I've been a member of this group for a while, but at the behest of Bentley, i'm posting my introduction. I never enjoyed history until I left (formal) education and started reading on my own; I'm afraid that I, like many, had sub-standard history teachers who failed to make a most fascinating subject interesting to their students.

Ever since I went to the "Armour of Henry VIII" exhibit at the Tower of London, I've been reading scads of Tudor history. I find the entire family endlessly fascinating. (Although, believe it or not, I've read only two books on Elizabeth I so far. I'm looking forward to reading about her in the near future.) To avoid confusion, I've avoided all the great Tudor fiction out there.

I also enjoy reading about Chicago's history: political, cultural, architectural, and natural history.

message 371: by Mike (new)

Mike (glaucus) | 51 comments I am a historian and I am always looking for good books to use in my introductory courses. For most of my students they only exposure they get to history is the very brief texts that they are forced to read. However, I have been introducing "real" history books and have been getting an interesting feed back. I always understand that I will get the comment on the book review assignment. "I would never have willingly read this book." To which I usually say "that is the point".

I teach introductory World Civilization I and II, Western Civilization I and II, American History I and II, and I am developing a Latin American set of classes. I welcome suggestions about possible texts for my classes. I am currently using "Fraud of the Century" by Roy Morris, Jr. for a Modern American History class. The only thing I ask is that if anyone has a suggestion, please give me a few lines on what is so compelling about your suggestion.

Aside from that, I am also designing classes for online use and I tend to be a bit sporadic in these online areas. I will make a diligent effort to keep up. Thanks all.

just to add a few points. I am looking for, in the opinion of the read, history books that are "readable". Now I know that is a broad definition. What I mean by readable is that the author tries to provide clear and understandable language to the reader. This is not easy as most everyone knows.

Mike (glaucus) | 51 comments Thanks Jill. My goal is to find good books on historical topics that will peak the interest of introductory college students. The funny thing is that those books I find to be of interest, I know that students will not. So I have had to broaden my perspective as the goal is not my interest but to interest others.

After leaving the service I earned my pilot's license, and had a career in aviation first as a flight instructor, and then as a corporate pilot for a large company. Ebb (ebbsbooks) Hi,

My name's Ebony and I'm from New Jersey, USA. I joined this group because I love history. I recently graduated as a history major from Webster University. During college I didn't have as much time to read history books for fun as I did in high school, but now that I'm finished I'd like to get started again :) I usually read books about Nazi Germany but I've started branching out and would like to read and learn more about other countries' histories, especially the history of the United Kingdom and the history of Thailand, since I spent semesters studying abroad in those places. I've recently developed an interest in Greek mythology and history as well since taking an online class about it. I'm almost finished reading the Odyssey and would love to dive into more Greek history and mythology.

I'm excited to get to know everyone and find some great history reads :)

Tom | 5 comments Hi, all! I'm new to the group, so here's my brief introduction. I'm an American with an interest in many aspects of U.S. history: military, economic, and political. However, I tend to shy away from revisionism for the sake of revisionism. I'm cautious to avoid "historians" with an agenda. I also enjoy Irish history and various philosophers in history, but the latter may be for another group.

Bryan Craig Great Michelle, good luck on school. Glad you could join us.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book/author. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.
