Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6399 comments Hi Marie (Waving Back) and all you other challenge addicts ... just one question.. a book can't be used twice for different parts of the challenge.. how about if two team members are reading the same book at the same time can it only be used once by who ever shelves it first?

A book can't be used twice by the same person, like we allowed for Leprechaun, or like you can do for individual challenges. Same book between different members is fine.

Cait S | 2825 comments So how do we win? Like is it just at the end the team with the most cumulative points across all the events? Will there be different winning categories (most pages read, etc)?

And yup, I'm ready. I've recently come into a new frame of mind regarding my reading challenges lol I'm ready to take this on.

message 111: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Cait wrote: "So how do we win?"

Yup, the winner winners will be the ones that have the most points for ALL the challenges combined. As for different winning categories, we haven't discussed that yet, but probably.

Teams that win will be the teams that work well together. It's not like Tower where just reading the most books the fastest wins. It's going to be a variety of things, of finding the right books, doing certain things and paying attention to points. Some events are going to be very specific on what needs to happen to achieve the points.

It's gonna be months and months of craziness!

Don't y'all think we need something fun to do, while we're

Waiting on Wobble?!

I'm considering volunteering for a co-captain spot for this one...any suggestions from past captains, co-captains and mods?? Karsyn, what perfect timing - it fits in with my do nothing vacation! (and by do nothing....I mean read...)

message 127: by Kelly B (new)

Kelly B (kellybey) | 786 comments The Read-a-thon sounds great! And the timing couldn't be better for me: I don't work any of those days except for an hour Monday night:-). Plus, my kids don't have any sports events or programs those days.......I can definitely plan for a few hours reading each day.

Kay Kay | 1794 comments I hope that I get a spot on a team. If I don't I will be so bummed. Do we know how many have volunteered to be a captain or co captain yet?

If it helped create another team I could co captain, but I have never done anything like that before.

There will be a lot for people to read, AND, signups will be limited as it will be dependent on the number of captains we get. So if we only get 5 captains (for example) then we will only be making 5 teams based on the people that signed up first and everyone else will go on the waiting list.

So that is why we are getting everything out there now, let everyone get their heads around it, and then a short sign up period ..."

Ooooh - if there are limits, I hope I make it into a team!!!

Trouble is I don't want to be a Captain :(

Keeps saying it is not for the faint-hearted - well with a good team alongside you, you can all suck thumbs together while reading.

It also says you may have to read outside your comfort zone - I am willing to GULP read out of the horror genre if I am forced!!!

See I will make a good team member - LOL!!!

Greta | 1459 comments What are the requirements for captain & co-captains? Sorry if this has already been posted.

message 132: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Signups will start the 15th.

There's little chance we won't have enough spots, so don't fret. Especially if you sign up in the first few days, you'll be on a team!! Please don't worry about that.

We've always had plenty of people who have been captains over the challenges and while (right now) the mods aren't going to be captains, we can/will be if it gets to the point where we need more.

No worries! I really doubt there will be people without teams, it COULD happen, but I doubt it!

Cait S | 2825 comments My only concern with it all at this point is the sheer size of the library book stack I'm going to need to make sure I can fill anything at any time.

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments Cait wrote: "My only concern with it all at this point is the sheer size of the library book stack I'm going to need to make sure I can fill anything at any time. ..."

I'm a little concerned about that part. It's the one piece of this upcoming challenge that's making me the most apprehensive about signing up.

I only go to the library on Thursdays (sometimes/rarely my weekly visit is on Wednesday or Friday) and I'm worried that my team will have a challenge and I won't have a book available to read for it.

Karsyn (or Mods), is there a way we (meaning me, lol) could get a list of the books we'll be required/need to read when the challenge starts and I'm placed on a team? So that I can check out books and have them ready to go on time?

Or do I not need to worry? Am I making this out to be more complicated than it is? (Though it's plenty complicated.) ???

message 137: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments I think it would be impossible for them to give us a list of all the books we'll need. For Tower Teams, there was what? Like 1,000 tasks or something like that. And it was totally random which one your team was given at any given time.

With 6 challenges in one, with many options each, you would have to check out literally hundreds of books to be completely covered.

message 138: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments I shoot for having about 20 out at a time usually. And then if I end up needing something that I don't have, I'll make a special trip that usually ends with me getting that book.........and five others lol

My system's limit is 50, thank goodness. And my librarians know me on sight now :P

message 139: by Kazen (new)

Kazen For those in the US, do you have access to e-library books via Overdrive? Check your local library, of course, but also your state library. For example, the New York Public Library (NYPL in New York City) gives library cards to anyone with a state ID or license and their e-stacks have thousands and thousands of books. Perfect for filling in holes :)

message 140: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments Yup, my library offers that. That's a great suggestion! Hopefully that'll help ease your worries, Jen!

Unfortunately I can never finish ANYTHING on Kindle. Even if I'm loving the book, I will quit halfway through. Hardcover or bust lol

message 141: by Jen (new)

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments That's a good point/reminder, Cait, about the randomness that was Tower Teams IV. I had forgotten.

Unfortunately, Cait and Kazen, my library system is pretty small. They do have some e-books available for Overdrive download, but they rarely own more than one copy and the ones I invariably want/need are never available when I want/need them. :-(

I'm not sure I'll be able to do this WOBBLE challenge. It sounds super fun, but it also sounds super involved and I'm worried that, with my mental disabilities, I'll feel too overwhelmed to make a go of it.

Tower Teams was more my speed, where the goals were structured such that I could read whatever I wanted and stumble upon goal items in happy accidents. And it lasted months but it wasn't changing every few weeks. So maybe I should just take a pass on this one?

I just don't know. . . :'(

message 142: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Jen wrote: "Am I making this out to be more complicated than it is?"

Yup. :)

There's no list of books, so we can't do that. It's not that involved.

It's all about the team work. I don't want to give too much away, that's the point of only giving a little details now. We don't want to give away what you will be doing 3 months from now, that takes the fun out of it.

It's NOT as dire as "you must read book A, book C and book D." We wouldn't make it that complicated.

You see what the challenges are now, I suggest looking over any challenges we've done before that we are doing again, and you'll see an idea of what you need to do.

W is easy enough, it's a spell-it-out. So, anything goes there.
O is about team work, working together to accomplish events
B is team work, guessing to fire on a ship, reading for hits/misses
B is cover/title and likely the most specialized but dooable
L is the wild card, but has multiple options to choose from
E is a bit of a wild card, but again will have options

As long as you are flexible, it's a very dooable challenge. It is a challenge though, and it will be very involved. It will take a lot of discussion and working with your team.

Only you can decide if you want to join in, Jen. It is really not as detailed as you may be thinking it is. But remember, we're only asking for 1 book per week per person. I know you read a lot, but if you wanted to join in, but are super concerned about it, then only commit to the one book a week so you don't get overwhelmed for the challenge but still join in.

Okay, Karsyn. And thank you! This message is very reassuring to me. I think I will give the W.O.B.B.L.E. team challenge a try.

I might even be able to handle a co-captain's responsibilities, if they're similar to what they were for Tower Teams. (Updating spreadsheet, encouraging teammates, etc.) :-)

Jen, I have that same problem .... little library which equals fewer book options and longer wait times for books you want.

I 'm sure you won't have any trouble with this challenge:)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments Those with small library systems it might be worth looking into the Pennsylvania Free Library System,. They offer a card for $50 to those outside of the state, which you can use to borrow ebooks. I saw it posted years ago in an Amazon Kindle forum, my library and the neighboring system which I also qualify for a free card from both have a nice selection of e-books from both Overdrive and 3M so I haven't tried this option personally.
