Actually, we have, starting day will be a Friday. The reason for this is to be the end of the working week for all time-zones. If we did Saturday, then Asia and Australia will start on a Sunday... and that's not as fun.

Fortunately, we have records of that. But, you can always say the challenges you captained on the other info field.

Odds that one of the mods have participated on one of those are pretty high... we are a bit addicted around here.

Oh! I didn't even think about that! But yeah, Friday is a good day, too. I was mainly just hoping it wouldn't be the middle of the week.

Greta | 1459 comments This will be great! All my current team challenges are coming to a close soon, so what better way to keep things fun over summer/fall?! I will probably put my name in for captain but being a player would be fine too :-)

Greta | 1459 comments Question- will we be able to request to be on a team with one or more friends?

message 208: by Tara (new)

Tara | 1259 comments Will it be possible to try to 'request' to play with others? I realize it has to all balance out, but as we are signing up, can we request to be on a team with friends and if it works out, great? If not, just more people to meet?! Thanks!

message 209: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) I'm away from Internet and phone service for the first two weeks of August. Will there be any way to deal with that? I read a lot during those 2 weeks, but reporting and being in touch with my team will be a challenge. The closest town with phone service is 40 miles away;)

Karsyn (imzadi) Karen Michele ~ we're discussing how it would work. Are the dates exactly Aug 1 - Aug 14th that you are out of touch? Also, how many books do you typically read per week?

message 214: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Wow, Karen Michele! No electricity!! You will be roughing it for sure! If reading by flashlight at night, make sure to take lots of spare batteries. ;)

We leave on Friday, July 29, and I have service most of the day while driving so I would get the task. We return on Friday the 12th and again I will get service back during the drive back. We do sometimes go to town during the 2 weeks, but I wouldn't know exactly when I would have service. I read about 4 books a week regularly and a bit more on this trip.

Thanks! :) Sign up and note it in the comments when you'll be gone (though we'll likely remember). We have two ways we can work it out, so we'll discuss that with you and your team when the time gets closer.

Ozana Ozzy (barbozzy) | 1018 comments Oh, I love this wheel-a-thon challenges sooo so much. This will be my 4th in a row, I missed first wheelathon but I fel in love for NBRC long reading challenges. This is great opportunity for reading and shareing, meating new book lovers. Groups are always graeat.
Since my first lenguage is not English my teammates always helped me to cross language barriers and helped me with games I'm not familliar with.

I can't wait and hope to sing up early to make it into a challenge.
Hope that it will be more than five groups, always our moderators, they are great by the way, had found the way for all of us to enter the challenges.

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments The requirement for books to be 100+ pages but also 25,000+ words is interesting to me.

Example: Alice in Wonderland and Heart of Darkness are both 136 pages, but one is 14K words and the other 53K. Huge difference!

That is exactly why we put word count requirements around children's books. The font is MUCH larger and they usually have pictures so 100 pages is not the same as an adults 100 page book

So books have to be BOTH 100 pages or more AND 25,000 words or more?

Yup have been as long as I can remember (at least the last 3-4 Team Challenges).

Samantha (missymaysreadingnook) | 808 comments Question: Where can you find the word count of a book? I just want to make sure that if I pick a book around the 100 page mark that it is meeting the 25,000 page minimum as well

We'll have those links during the challenge. WorldCat is one, AR Book Find is another. You mainly have to worry about it for Middle Grade/Children's books. We just don't want pages of pictures where we want words.

For children's books, yep. Has been that way since I've been here which was 2012 (although for some challenges it is 160 pages / 40,000 words)

Thanks! I know in the past I've read a few books that were around 100 pages and seemed pretty short. Its good to know there's a source out there with some numbers :)

Do people volunteering to be co-captains also have to have previous co/captaining experience here, or is it just for those volunteering to be "main" captains?

No specific one right now. That's all still being worked out. We have mods all around the globe, so it just depend on who can get what done and when. Likely signups will be up early, but at the very latest, it'd be morning of Eastern US, when I get up. :) I'm sure our other mods will get to it before that though.

Ray (user2637) (hugpete) | 1521 comments I'm definitely keeping an eye on this thread and Wobble in general but still on the fence about joining. I know I can read a book a week, so if I look at it from that perspective, then it's not a big deal but... October is far away! I have no idea what will be going on in my life then. :/

So I guess my question is, if I join and then a month or 2 in I can't continue, what happens? Will everyone be mad at me?

Not mad. It's not SB, we won't rate you a 3. But like SB it IS a commitment so we do ask you join only if you can commit the full time. Emergencies happen, and that's understandable of course. But other than that, it's pretty much knowing you're in it for the long haul. It's too hard to try to change teams, find new players and such like that. It's not really fair to your team, any team, if someone just drops out when they are counting on at least 1 book, if not more, a week from that player.

You'll have to decide, but I do suggest only joining up if you can commit to all of it. That's what the team challenges are. When you jump in, you gotta jump all the way in. It's worth it, when you participate fully.

Teresa (teresab78) | 1658 comments The thing that preventing me from joining right away is having to find the right book that might be out of your genre. I don't read much outside my comfort zone and I think finding the right book for some of the challenges is daunting. I love team challenges but that scares me.

You won't have to do that. We're not going to make people read what they don't want to. I read a huge variety of things, but I have things I won't read and we don't force anyone out of their comfort zone.

I think we've given off the wrong vibes about the challenge. It's really not going to be that difficult. Most of y'all have done a Wheel-a-Thon before, and if not, at least a spell-it-out. No pressure there. If you haven't, look at the Team Challenge Archives and read over the info for Wheel & Battleship. We're not asking you to read out of your comfort zone. Look at one of the Bingos. Again, very simple.

I can tell y'all that for sure, 4 of the 6 challenges will not ask you to step out of your comfort zone in anyway. You work together, reading what you want to accomplish goals. It will not be hard. It will not really push you. We only ask that you are flexible because you might need to find a certain letter to read (for Wheel), or something on the cover to read (for Bingo)..... You just can't go into it with a set lineup of 25 books you will read and expect them all to fit. But it's not pushing into something you don't want to read.

With the other two, there's some specifics but it's more like the "goals" of TTIV. There's choices. Again, no throwing a book/genre at you and telling you to read it when it's not your thing.

It's less about WHAT you read, and more about HOW you work TOGETHER to read what you WANT/CAN read.
