Gwen | 316 comments Thanks for the feedback, Kaley.

How about The Night Watch by Sarah Waters The Night Watch by Sarah Waters for 9-Blue? The N being in the title...

Hmm, I'm reading the physical book for The Enchanted April so I think it may have a different cover. Let me get back to you on that. I'll research to see if I have anything else that fits.

Don't pencil me in for anything yet, although I'm pretty sure I want to read The False Prince. I want to read On a Pale Horse, too, so I hope that one fits! Let me know...

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Those both look good!

As far as On a Pale Horse goes -- if all else fails, it can be used for a non-color card, so I say go for it either way! :) (I'm going to wait for a few more people to comment on it as far as the cover goes, but it looks like it'll probably pass for yellow!)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments Hey everyone! Thanks for the warm welcome! I’m MelanieJoy - you can also give me a nickname like Mel, Melanie, MJ, or something else!

I live in California, and this is my 2nd UNO challenge. I skipped it last year and mostly took a year long break from Goodreads due to trying out a different job. I’m back into teaching: I teach 2 year olds at a private school. I won’t be reading as much as a I have in challenges past but I’ll shoot for a book every week or 2.

My favorite genre is YA or Fantasy. For quick reads, I’ll also read romance, and if I want to learn something I’ll try a classic, regency, or non fiction. I also like some mysteries thrillers and crimes.

Two books I’m looking forward to reading soon are Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine, and Kingdom of Copper by S A Chakraborty

Looking forward to getting to know you all! I’ll be posting on my lunch break or late at night depending on my schedule for the day.

Alexis Kastigar | 15 comments One of the books I have in my arsenal on-hand I can work on reading is pretty solid for a Draw 2 spot. Arthas Rise of the Lich King (World of Warcraft, #6) by Christie Golden has characters and story locations that will cover almost every numbered card except for 7 or 8 (at a basic, cursory look. I can likely find a character that will work for them as well upon reading it). I'm willing to claim that if no one else will.

Likewise I have two others on-hand that would work for blue covers.

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw , would work for 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, Skip (again at first glance)

Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls by Lynn Weingarten would work for 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, Skip

Figured I'd throw those out to start since we have so many blue cards.

Oh oops. I didn’t know you made into that scene. I left it vague enough that it doesn’t spoil anything. But I would say to give it another try. I find it really good. I just need to read the last one!

Ilsen | 161 comments I also haven’t thought about what books are going where. I’m probably going to improvise or if you give me a category, I’ll try to find something in my TBR to squeeze in!

No worries on that at all. As you post a book you finish, just let me know what cards it could fit for. I will place it wherever it fits, so no need to worry ahead of time about where it could fit. It’s VERY rare that something doesn’t fit. Since standalone books fit for 0 and series books can fit 1-9, it’s usually not a problem at all. The only thing I can think that WOULDN'T fit (aside from something that was below the page count requirement) would be something very high up in a series (10+) that doesn’t have any letters that fit, but that’s not very common.

The only cards I really care about getting claimed ahead of time are color cards, since the requirements about those are so specific. Anything else is pretty easy to shuffle around as needed! (Well...color cards and maybe the mini challenge tasks once those come out... but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it! We are a few weeks away from needing to be concerned about that!)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality, #1) by Piers Anthony was ruled to be yellow enough!

Doctor Sleep (The Shining, #2) by Stephen King however was ruled to be not red enough. So we can't use it for a color card (but we can still use it for regular cards if you want to read it!)

message 61: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Since we are now a little less than four days out, I'm going to go ahead and claim one of the color cards to start off with. We actually have a Wild Draw 4 in our first hand, so I'm going to take that one duplicating 1 Blue.

message 62: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments We have to do it in order right? Because if that’s the case I’m going to try to see what fits that someone hasn’t claimed.

message 63: by Kaley (last edited Jan 28, 2020 07:19AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments So we can't get points for future hands until the previous hand is complete, but we are allowed to read in any order.

For now, I'd say just read what you want! I'll be placing cards in the earliest hand it can fit, so to start off I'm not too worried about it. If you read something that doesn't fit a card till Hand 3, it's not a big deal, because we will get the previous hands completed before the end of the month.

If we get halfway through the month and there's a specific card # that we seem to need a lot of still, I might ask people to focus on those. But usually books can fit for a few different options, so toward the end of each month I might shuffle books around to optimize how they fit into our hands. I'm guessing we'll be able to get through our regular hands no problem (as this is what tends to happen during UNO).

BUT — if there are any color cover books you have that fit for one of our color cards(+Wild Draw 4) that you want to read in Feb, please claim! Those ones are harder so I like having those planned out.

message 65: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Kastigar | 15 comments Yeah, I’ll work on “Arthas” for the Draw 2 spot, Kaley! We can use it to claim any other spot needed. I usually plow through the Warcraft novels quickly so I’ll start on that then move to the other blue covers I have if we need more colored cards covered.

UNO 2020

message 67: by MelanieJoy (last edited Jan 28, 2020 07:59PM) (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments So here are my top books to read:

Paper and Fire (The Great Library, #2) by Rachel Caine (too bad orange isn't a color card!)

The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty (it has a green door in the other edition but this is the one I've checked out from the Library to read. Not sure if it has enough blue but it might be worth trying.

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo The cover looks blue but it's very muted and teal-ish so I'm not sure.

I'll definitely finish those three this month, and don't care where they're placed.

Sidenote - I'm impressed with Rachel Caine's writing. Apparently she's written under other pen names but didn't get much traction. She'd doing good with the Great Library and the Stillhouse Lake series. Didn't read the Morganhill vampires.

Anybody else have an author they're impressed with? I know a couple people on this team seem to like Colleen Hoover; haven't tried her stuff yet.

The Kingdom of Copper looks blue enough to me! The areas around the town/waterfall (I think that's what it is?) look navy, so I think it would count. Unless in person it looks like something other than blue, of course -- so let me know!

I'll ask about To Kill a Kingdom because that is one of those bluish green shades that I never know about!

If The Kingdom of Copper edges look navy in person, let me know and I can put that down for one of our color cards.

Perfect! I will mark that down.

Just as you finish them! (unless it's a color cover)

message 73: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Captains group consensus is that To Kill a Kingdom is blue enough, so if you’re for sure going to read that in Feb, I’ll put it down for 2 Blue. Let me know about how the cover of the other one is in person, because if it looks blue enough as well I can mark you for that as well.

I really liked the first two books of the Stillhouse Lake series! I haven’t tried her others.

I’ve also heard good things about Colleen Hoover but haven’t given her a try yet. I really enjoy Rainbow Rowell as well (more YA) and J. Lynn (Jennifer L. Armentrout under a pen name, more New Adult).

ETA: actually, I did read the first Morganville Vampires book. I didn’t really care for it!

Sounds good! And you said you are planning to read these two in Feb. also, correct?
The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

If so, I'll write you down for 9 Blue and 2 Blue, since those should both work for blue.

I can read I Am Not a Serial Killer (John Cleaver, #1) by Dan Wells for Red 5 and I'll also be reading Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1) by Maureen Johnson . Not sure if we need any more blues but it'll work for 1 or 2.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments announcement

Hi all!

We are about 40 hours away from challenge start. I can't believe it's so soon already!

I wanted to go ahead and take this opportunity to update everyone on where we stand for planning for the month and talk about what to expect once the challenge starts!

We have a lot of our color cards covered, but we still have one left that is unclaimed: 1 Yellow.

We have one Wild Draw 4 card left. These can duplicate any of our color cards that aren't already being duplicated, so our remaining options for these are: 9 Blue, 5 Red, 1 Yellow, 4 Red, & 0 Yellow.

If you want to claim any of those cards, please let me know — that way we don't have to worry about them later!

When you finish a book, please post a completion post to this thread following this format:
Book:
Author:
Date Read:
Cards it fits:
Cover color (if applicable):

Remember that only books started after the challenge starts can be used for UNO. So make sure to check with this countdown if you're not sure. I'll be posting to this thread once the challenge has started, but I'll be a few hours late since it starts at around 3 a.m. my time!

Please also remember that per UNO challenge sign-ups, you agreed to check in to this thread at least once a week. I understand real life gets super busy, but a quick check-in just to say you're still here & participating is always greatly appreciated!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Edited to add in Elena's and Laila Jane's color card claims
