If you are good at making money (and presumably these guys are) you make the most during change, because this brings in the most opportunities. It only works, though, if you money making is not restricted to making things. If you make things, it is critically dependent on what you make. Frackers won't be getting richer.

Chinese testing kit companies 'linked to serious human rights abuses' in China https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6...

La Trobe University's James Leibold says there are "privacy collection" and human rights concerns surrounding the 10 million Chinese COVID-19 testing kits arriving in Australia.

The testing kits were part of a deal with Chinese company Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) brokered by mining magnate Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest, and require DNA samples in order for them to work.

The government sought high level security advice on whether the biometric information of Australians could be sent back to China.

Mr Siebold told Sky News host he doesn't know if his DNA samples - if he needed to use the testing kits - would "end up in Beijing in some police linked data base".

On top of the obvious privacy issues, Mr Siebold said there are ethical concerns relating to the two Chinese companies who have provided the machines used to test the data.

He said Beijing Genomic Institute and Thermo-Fisher Scientific are "liked to serious human rights abuses in China's western region of Xinjiang".

"There's a lack of full information at this stage".

If you are going to reject Chinese products based on Chinese human rights or other government actions, you had better start producing a lot of stuff yourself. Thanks to the big multis exporting jobs, etc to less well-regulated places with cheaper labour, China now makes something like 97% of the world's base pharmaceutical chemicals, and there are about 250,000 different chemicals. Further, a lot of countries need China to buy many of their exports.

My personal view is I couldn't care less whether Beijing knew my DNA sequence. What could they do with it? Of more concern would be my immediate government's agencies.

I'd be more concerned about the health ramifications of 97% of the world's base pharmaceutical chemicals being made in China.

Your use of the term "less well-regulated places" raises alarm bells in my mind, Ian.

How much confidence can we have in the safety and quality of pharmaceutical drugs and medications we humans blithely ingest or otherwise take (in frightening quantities) especially in the West?

Actually, the 97% may be misleading. It refers to that for which quality control is sufficient to get past the FDA, etc, and there will be manufacturing, like in Russia, that has not even tried. I have no idea what happens in lesser places, but frankly, Chinese manufacturing is now of a high quality and I for one would not wish to try the lesser sources.

The point I was trying to make is the US and Europe have effectively moved their pharmaceutical manufacturing to China, but they will still monitor the quality. However, if as a matter of human rights you refuse to buy from China, you are in real trouble. It is possible India could fire up production, but I am unsure. The problem with chemical manufacturing is you basically need a plant devoted to one product, or a very limited number of close variants. You can't just set up in some building and get started because each process step has carefully designed b=vssels that have to be made independently. Each process stream will take months to st up and get it running properly, and that assumes you can get access to all the inputs you need. Chemical manufacturing is quite different from other manufacturing.

Further to this, you may note the gassing of people in India. This shows a problem of complexity of operations with the chemical industry. What seems to have happened is there was a lockdown and they closed down the plant, then when it was over, they restarted it, and, oops.

The problem with a chemical process is a whole lot of things have to be kept in equilibrium, and you cannot just throw a switch to stop it, or to restart it. Restarting can be a nightmare if it is not properly cleaned out, and even then everything has to be done very carefully so as to build up to where you want it. Not doing everything properly can have awful consequences.

Maybe it is, but most people die because their hearts stop. Shifting cause like that begs the question, why did it stop? For example, my father dies because his heart stopped functioning, but he had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for several months. To say the cancer was not the cause might be true in a sense, but not very helpful. The question is, did they have advanced COVID 19 - if so, the general weakness might have brought on something else, but it is sophistry to say the virus had no responsibility

So according to that scientific study from a leading medical research organization in Italy, the revised death toll in Italy's case would be about 1,000 not the 30,000 or so reported. (German coroners were saying the same thing about the Italians about 6 weeks ago).

Beyond the Italian situation, be on the lookout for reports of very similar scientific studies to be released soon about the high (reported) death tolls in countries like the USA, UK, Spain etc.

I just hope when that happens, we have politicians in our nations as irate as this politician in Italy was the other day:

Intriguing? 3.8% had no other pathologies. Something like 96% had pneumonia, so they died of pneumonia, not of COVID 19. And exactly what caused the pneumonia? A sudden outbreak of pneumonia?? Pneumonia with no other cause doesn't happen, and these ALL had COVID 19, which is known to cause pneumonia, but not in these cases? The logic here baffles me. Has nobody heard of th mathematics of set theory?

On May 1, Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) introduced the Testing, Reaching, And Contacting Everyone (TRACE) Act, to help fund coronavirus testing and tracing done through the Department of Health and Human Services.

Testing and contact tracing are considered crucial in the fight to re-establish nationwide normalcy in the wake of coronavirus, and H.R. 6666 wants to provide nearly $100 billion in funding to help that.

The bill has nearly 40 co-sponsors, signifying it has widespread support.

No one is safe.

No one is immune.

No one gets spared the anguish, fear and heartache of living under the shadow of an authoritarian police state.

That’s the message being broadcast 24/7 with every new piece of government propaganda, every new law that criminalizes otherwise lawful activity, every new policeman on the beat, every new surveillance camera casting a watchful eye, every sensationalist news story that titillates and distracts, every new prison or detention center built to house troublemakers and other undesirables, every new court ruling that gives government agents a green light to strip and steal and rape and ravage the citizenry, every school that opts to indoctrinate rather than educate, and every new justification for why Americans should comply with the government’s attempts to trample the Constitution underfoot.

Yes, COVID-19 has taken a significant toll on the nation emotionally, physically, and economically, but there are still greater dangers on the horizon.

As long as “we the people” continue to allow the government to trample our rights in the so-called name of national security, things will get worse, not better.

It’s already worse.

Now there’s talk of mass testing for COVID-19 antibodies, screening checkpoints, contact tracing, immunity passports to allow those who have recovered from the virus to move around more freely, and snitch tip lines for reporting “rule breakers” to the authorities.

If you can’t read the writing on the wall, you need to pay better attention.

These may seem like small, necessary steps in the war against the COVID-19 virus, but they’re only necessary to the police state in its efforts to further undermine the Constitution, extend its control over the populace, and feed its insatiable appetite for ever-greater powers.

Nothing is ever as simple as the government claims it is.

Whatever dangerous practices you allow the government to carry out now—whether it’s in the name of national security or protecting America’s borders or making America healthy again—rest assured, these same practices can and will be used against you when the government decides to set its sights on you.

The war on drugs turned out to be a war on the American people, waged with SWAT teams and militarized police.

The war on terror turned out to be a war on the American people, waged with warrantless surveillance and indefinite detention.

The war on immigration turned out to be a war on the American people, waged with roving government agents demanding “papers, please.”

This war on COVID-19 will be yet another war on the American people, waged with all of the surveillance weaponry at the government’s disposal: thermal imaging cameras, drones, contact tracing, biometric databases, etc.

So you see, when you talk about empowering government agents to screen the populace in order to control and prevent spread of this virus, what you’re really talking about is creating a society in which ID cards, round ups, checkpoints and detention centers become routine weapons used by the government to control and suppress the populace, no matter the threat.

This is also how you pave the way for a national identification system of epic proportions.

Imagine it: a national classification system that not only categorizes you according to your health status but also allows the government to sort you in a hundred other ways: by gender, orientation, wealth, medical condition, religious beliefs, political viewpoint, legal status, etc.

Are you starting to get the bigger picture yet?

This is just another wolf in sheep’s clothing, a “show me your papers” scheme disguised as a means of fighting a virus.

Don’t fall for it.

The ramifications of such a “show me your papers” society in which government officials are empowered to stop individuals, demand they identify themselves, and subject them to patdowns, warrantless screenings, searches, and interrogations are beyond chilling.

By allowing government agents to establish a litmus test for individuals to be able to exit a state of lockdown and engage in commerce, movement and any other right that corresponds to life in a supposedly free society, it lays the groundwork for a society in which you are required to identify yourself at any time to any government worker who demands it for any reason.

Such tactics quickly lead one down a slippery slope that ends with government agents empowered to force anyone and everyone to prove they are in compliance with every statute and regulation on the books.

It used to be that unless police had a reasonable suspicion that a person was guilty of wrongdoing, they had no legal authority to stop the person and require identification. In other words, “we the people” had the right to come and go as we please without the fear of being questioned by police or forced to identify ourselves.

Unfortunately, in this age of COVID-19, that unrestricted right to move about freely is being pitted against the government’s power to lock down communities at a moment’s notice. And in this tug-of-war between individual freedoms and government power, “we the people” have been on the losing end of the deal.

Curiously enough, these COVID-19 restrictions dovetail conveniently with a national timeline for states to comply with the Real ID Act, which imposes federal standards on identity documents such as state drivers’ licenses, a prelude to this national identification system.

Talk about a perfect storm for bringing about a national ID card, the ultimate human tracking device.

Granted, in the absence of a national ID card, which would make the police state’s task of monitoring, tracking and singling out individual suspects far simpler, “we the people” are already tracked in a myriad of ways: through our state driver’s licenses, Social Security numbers, bank accounts, purchases and electronic transactions; by way of our correspondence and communication devices—email, phone calls and mobile phones; through chips implanted in our vehicles, identification documents, even our clothing.

Add to this the fact that businesses, schools and other facilities are relying more and more on fingerprints and facial recognition to identify us. All the while, data companies such as Acxiom are capturing vast caches of personal information to help airports, retailers, police and other government authorities instantly determine whether someone is the person he or she claims to be.

This informational glut—used to great advantage by both the government and corporate sectors—has converged into a mandate for “an internal passport,” a.k.a., a national ID card that would store information as basic as a person’s name, birth date and place of birth, as well as private information, including a Social Security number, fingerprint, retinal scan and personal, criminal and financial records.

A federalized, computerized, cross-referenced, databased system of identification policed by government agents would be the final nail in the coffin for privacy (not to mention a logistical security nightmare that would leave Americans even more vulnerable to every hacker in the cybersphere).

Americans have always resisted adopting a national ID card for good reason: it gives the government and its agents the ultimate power to target, track and terrorize the populace according to the government’s own nefarious purposes.

National ID card systems have been used before, by other oppressive governments, in the name of national security, invariably with horrifying results.

For instance, in Germany, the Nazis required all Jews to carry special stamped ID cards for travel within the country. A prelude to the yellow Star of David badges, these stamped cards were instrumental in identifying Jews for deportation to death camps in Poland.

Author Raul Hilberg summarizes the impact that such a system had on the Jews:

The whole identification system, with its personal documents, specially assigned names, and conspicuous tagging in public, was a powerful weapon in the hands of the police. First, the system was an auxiliary device that facilitated the enforcement of residence and movement restrictions. Second, it was an independent control measure in that it enabled the police to pick up any Jew, anywhere, anytime. Third, and perhaps most important, identification had a paralyzing effect on its victims.

In South Africa during apartheid, pass books were used to regulate the movement of black citizens and segregate the population. The Pass Laws Act of 1952 stipulated where, when and for how long a black African could remain in certain areas. Any government employee could strike out entries, which cancelled the permission to remain in an area. A pass book that did not have a valid entry resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of the bearer.

Identity cards played a crucial role in the genocide of the Tutsis in the central African country of Rwanda. The assault, carried out by extremist Hutu militia groups, lasted around 100 days and resulted in close to a million deaths. While the ID cards were not a precondition to the genocide, they were a facilitating factor. Once the genocide began, the production of an identity card with the designation “Tutsi” spelled a death sentence at any roadblock.

Identity cards have also helped oppressive regimes carry out eliminationist policies such as mass expulsion, forced relocation and group denationalization. Through the use of identity cards, Ethiopian authorities were able to identify people with Eritrean affiliation during the mass expulsion of 1998. The Vietnamese government was able to locate ethnic Chinese more easily during their 1978-79 expulsion. The USSR used identity cards to force the relocation of ethnic Koreans (1937), Volga Germans (1941), Kamyks and Karachai (1943), Crimean Tartars, Meshkhetian Turks, Chechens, Ingush and Balkars (1944) and ethnic Greeks (1949). And ethnic Vietnamese were identified for group denationalization through identity cards in Cambodia in 1993, as were the Kurds in Syria in 1962.

And in the United States, post-9/11, more than 750 Muslim men were rounded up on the basis of their religion and ethnicity and detained for up to eight months. Their experiences echo those of 120,000 Japanese-Americans who were similarly detained 75 years ago following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Despite a belated apology and monetary issuance by the U.S. government, the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to declare such a practice illegal. Moreover, laws such as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) empower the government to arrest and detain indefinitely anyone they “suspect” of being an enemy of the state.

You see, you may be innocent of wrongdoing now, but when the standard for innocence is set by the government, no one is safe.

Everyone is a suspect.

And anyone can be a criminal when it’s the government determining what is a crime.

It’s no longer a matter of if, but when.

Remember, the police state does not discriminate.

At some point, it will not matter whether your skin is black or yellow or brown or white. It will not matter whether you’re an immigrant or a citizen. It will not matter whether you’re rich or poor. It won’t even matter whether you’re driving, flying or walking.

After all, government-issued bullets will kill you just as easily whether you’re a law-abiding citizen or a hardened criminal. Government jails will hold you just as easily whether you’ve obeyed every law or broken a dozen. And whether or not you’ve done anything wrong, government agents will treat you like a suspect simply because they have been trained to view and treat everyone like potential criminals.

Eventually, when the police state has turned that final screw and slammed that final door, all that will matter is whether some government agent—poorly trained, utterly ignorant and dismissive of the Constitution, way too hyped up on the power of their badges, and authorized to detain, search, interrogate, threaten and generally harass anyone they see fit—chooses to single you out for special treatment.

We’ve been having this same debate about the perils of government overreach for the past 50-plus years, and still we don’t seem to learn, or if we learn, we learn too late.

All of the excessive, abusive tactics employed by the government today—warrantless surveillance, stop and frisk searches, SWAT team raids, roadside strip searches, asset forfeiture schemes, private prisons, indefinite detention, militarized police, etc.—started out as a seemingly well-meaning plan to address some problem in society that needed a little extra help.

Be careful what you wish for: you will get more than you bargained for, especially when the government’s involved.

In the case of a national identification system, it might start off as a means of tracking COVID-19 cases in order to “safely” re-open the nation, but it will end up as a means of controlling the American people.

For those tempted to justify these draconian measures for whatever reason—for the sake of their health, the economy, or national security—remember, you can’t have it both ways.

You can’t live in a constitutional republic if you allow the government to act like a police state.

You can’t claim to value freedom if you allow the government to operate like a dictatorship.

You can’t expect to have your rights respected if you allow the government to treat whomever it pleases with disrespect and an utter disregard for the rule of law.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People, if you’re inclined to advance this double standard because you believe you have done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide, beware: there’s always a boomerang effect.

On 30 April 2020, the United Nations Human Rights Committee (the “UN HRC”) made clear that States cannot derogate from their international human rights obligations, even when taking measures to tackle a global pandemic, except in compliance with international law. The UN HRC issued a statement on derogations from States’ obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (the “ICCPR”) in connection with COVID-19-related measures.

Partners in Health was recently selected by Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker to conduct Coronavirus “contact tracing,” a process that involves teams of investigators finding out who infected people have come into contact with. The group is already “training and deploying hundreds of contact tracers.” Some citizens fear the potential for mass surveillance posed by contact tracing, especially in light of a Democrat-introduced bill in Congress to authorize contact tracing “at individuals’ residences.” Partners In Health’s involvement will not assuage many fears, considering the group has received funding from George Soros and Bill Gates organizations and counts Chelsea Clinton on its board of trustees.

Even when we seem to be free we will be like prisoners on parole, who can be snatched back to their cells at a moment’s notice.

I think I now understand why this period has come to be known by the repulsive word ‘lockdown’, an American term which describes the punishment of rioting convicts in a penitentiary, by confining them in their cells for long periods.

Germany’s federal government and mainstream media are engaged in damage control after a report that challenges the established Corona narrative leaked from the interior ministry.

Some of the report key passages are:

The dangerousness of Covid-19 was overestimated: probably at no point did the danger posed by the new virus go beyond the normal level.

The people who die from Corona are essentially those who would statistically die this year, because they have reached the end of their lives and their weakened bodies can no longer cope with any random everyday stress (including the approximately 150 viruses currently in circulation).

Worldwide, within a quarter of a year, there has been no more than 250,000 deaths from Covid-19, compared to 1.5 million deaths [25,100 in Germany] during the influenza wave 2017/18.

The danger is obviously no greater than that of many other viruses. There is no evidence that this was more than a false alarm.

A reproach could go along these lines: During the Corona crisis the State has proved itself as one of the biggest producers of Fake News.

The current toll is 383k, and since, with the exception of China, which had cases in February, most cases have been within 3 months, and it is far from over. What influenza wave in 2017 - I missed that one.

You're not alone there, Ian, you're actually in the norm of people who are unaware (about 99% I would estimate). Primarily that naivety in the population is because of underreporting of other viruses compared with the overreporting of this current virus - case in point is they don't keep a "death scoreboard" for other outbreaks like they have for this current one. But don't worry, you are in the right group :)

As you will see from reports by the CDC and others listed below, the deathtoll in the United States alone for that 2017-2018 Northern Hemisphere influenza winter season (over about 3 months) was estimated to be between 60,000-80,000 deaths (American lives only, not global - unfortunately there is no global record for that Influenza season even tho it was noted to be a bad flu season globally). Now the reported/recorded deathtoll in the US for the current virus is 111,000, BUT I caution strongly against this comparison as we are testing like mad here there and everywhere to find anyone with current virus (we obviously do not do that with Influenza). And as you will no doubt be aware, it has now been reported in most countries that there has been enormous controversy as to who is dying WITH the current virus in their system as opposed to who is dying OF the virus (Italy a case in point with 99% of deaths were people extremely ill and were on death's door already, USA reported the same and has since revised and started to record deaths specifically caused from the current virus rather than people who just caught it on their way out). So by contrast, we do not record Influenza deaths in the same way as there's never been such a hyper-focus on a single virus in the post-WW2 era...

NB: As the 2017-2018 flu year was the worst on record, I've read estimates that over 1M-1.5M died of Influenza globally. By contrast the reported/recorded deathtoll globally for this current virus doing the rounds is 398,256. Again tho, I imagine that high figure (already about 50% of annual average Influenza deathtoll annually) will likely be revised DOWN in years to come -- when it is more widely reported how many deaths were not due to the current virus specifically.

It's always depressing to realize just how much pseudoscience and anti-scientific nonsense has crept into what people call "science" or scientific academia. Trust for medical scientists/experts after this virus reporting will be at an all-time low after all this is over, I imagine...

Remember, the London Imperial College and the Johns Hopkins University (both Gates/Clinton funded and extremely aligned with the WHO) initially predicted via their "model" this virus would have a fatality rate of 3-4% -- arguably that is the biggest medical f*#k-up in recent decades as Stanford and others now say this virus has a fatality rate of 0.1-0.2% (that's around 30 times less deadly than the original Imperial/JH's Uni model's predictions which caused this whole lockdown).

Influenza has a fatality rate average of 0.1-0.2%, but I've read certain seasons (like the 2017-2018 season in the medical and CDC articles I posted above) have been estimated to be as high as 0.3% fatality rate...

The other comparison of course is how infectious this virus is (the R0 number). Latest studies I've read is this new virus is definitely more infectious than Influenza, but not by much.

Which all returns us to the original question of this discussion thread...

Is the Corona LOCKDOWN about something more than just the virus?

James, I put very little credence to predictions from models because their the answer depends on the values of the inputs, and the fact you are using a model usually indicates you are assuming those values, so might as well save some agony and assume the answer.

As for whether the lockdown has deeper meaning, here in NZ we have now gone for about 35 days without a community transmission, so it has achieved something. It was done rather harshly and fast, but now we have the problem of what do we do about the borders, because the danger is re-igniting it. Very tricky, but I doubt anyone local has made much from it, apart from landlords. Banks, etc, are also probably winners. Small businesses, especially in the tourist industry, are going to be in deepish trouble. However, I don't think our government was in any conspiracy to benefit certain sectors, but I wouldn't bet against that not happening in some other countries. My gut feel is they will get the worst of both worlds - piles of dead and a horrible economy, especially for the poorer (70%???)
