Mate that's ol hat, there's already a fingerprint scanner at the gym I am a member of.

By 2022, it'll be this:

Almost as curious as the UK extending the use of the Emergency Powers act for up to 2 years . . . .

I reckon a 2nd COVID Wave in the winter is a feasible outcome . . . .

Do you think it might even become mandatory to be vaccinated before you can enter some countries?

But seriously, yes the UK setting the Emergency Powers Act for 2 years when this first began, was one of my first alarm bells..the first of about 100+ alarm bells that have been ringing like church bells inside my skull!

Don't worry though, as one church goer said to me years ago for reasons unbeknown at the time: "it'll work itself out" with a cackle.

I believe the plan is to roll out these measures in a more subtle fashion...Coercion will be utilized, at times

So although masks and gloves might be mandatory in some regions, I don't think the Corona Vaccine will be mandatory (not in the West at least).

So if you follow that thru to logical conclusion, you'll be at that point creating 2nd class citizens out of society (the unvaccinated, those who remain "natural") https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73pu7... But it will be argued these people chose not to follow "science"

So yes, I think what you imply is correct: Certain things like international travel, certain types of jobs, will not be available for the unvaccinated.

And then the microchip is the next stage after the vaccine.

UNLESS, enough sheeple wake up and rebel of course ;)

James Morcan | 11378 comments Iain wrote: "what is it with scientism mate and these lovers of stats? Their proponents are almost as bad as the irrational religious zealots they oppose . . . ...."

I get you on scientism...Much of scientific academia has become as dogmatic and anti-scientific as the religious zealots they originally opposed.

But I actually think they are ignoring stats at present (or else creatively using them to suit their arguments which match politicians' arguments).

However, THE most important stat of all in my opinion, the fatality rate, have all but been forgotten in all this mess. Very low fatality rate - 30-40 times lower than original predictions that caused the lockdown...and in the range of the 0.1-0.3% fatality rate of seasonal flu (which we were originally told not compare it to)... So that's one stat not being talked about in favour of the overall narrative -- a narrative that's reported day and night like a Soviet Gulag loudspeaker announcement.

Is that not where there's a bit of an argument for balance from both sides of the argument though?

Too lax in being cautious and people disregard the risk and increase the chances of fatality.

And what about dosage of the virus? Doesn't the load have baring too?

If your nonchalant about it or not as cautious as you maybe should then susceptibility to higher dosages might also push the numbers up.

I dunno. Best to err on caution but it's a sandwich we're in.

Also, a lot of people are claiming to know (without full public discourse) which is "erring on the side of caution" - but if you think about the guaranteed lives (as in deaths) you have at the other end with every day extra you extend lockdowns and restrictions, then it is not so easy to know which approach would be erring on the side of caution... If for example there was an initial overstatement (as Trump has always implied) in medical predictions, then erring on the side of caution would be to open up everything and follow the Swedish model.

message 181: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1422 comments The people in East Asia are more likely to wear masks, so maybe they are effective. Maybe in Japan fewer people got in with the virus. As for the value of a lockdown, despite China being the first to actually have the real effects of the pandemic their lockdown stopped it. The US hasn't really bothered, and look at the cases and the deaths.

James, I most certainly am not writing off lives. My case is it is better to do something strict to save lives. Yes, the economy is a problem, and it will get worse, but I see no evidence that brief lockdowns cause more economic damage than extended viral outbreaks. You say, lock away the vulnerable, but the vulnerable need supplies, etc, and in NZ half of the deaths were in the elderly in rest homes that had the virus introduced by a worker.

The problem with most lockdowns is they did not lock down - the exceptions ruined everything. As for problems with cancer, etc, you think they would be solved if everyone went on as usual and the hospitals were flooded with COVID-19 cases? Of course not everything went right, and it never could. There was a wretched pandemic. Also, I am not in favour of arguments using retrovision. When the pandemic broke, nobody knew how bad it was going to be, and the nasty thing is, we still don't. The action of this virus is not that much distant from a hemorrhagic fever, and should we not try to stamp it out before it mutates that way? Maybe it won't, but from a strategic point of view, is it not better to play safe?

Nobody wants to gamble right now, I think you hit the nail on the head Iain. We want sooo much safefy, yet maybe we've become so scared of death as our world hasn't had much death in it in recent decades.

I doubt very much you could lockdown the generations who went thru the Great Depression or WW2... Imagine in late 1945 if you'd told WW2 vets coming home that we now need to lockdown for a virus in which there is about a 1-2 out of a 1,000 chance you'd die...They'd have laughed uproariously at whoever suggested it, then went around business as usual.

To be fair mate, I see your point but then your getting into the whole area where the social milieu was different and the subjective experience.

It's like someone arguing that all rich folk have money therefore why should they be depressed?

On another note: the reason we haven't experienced anything as monumental as this up until now and the lifestyle we have is thanks to those veterans.

If any toughness is being expressed in all of this, then it's in a detached and aloof way the stats have been expressed which has reduced life to a mathematical equation.

Ian Miller | 1422 comments James, I am not sure about the reference to India - they are getting about 17,000 new cases a day so any lockdown they have hasn't operated properly. If their economy is in trouble it is arguably because of too many cases.

Also, this statement that the death rate is 0.1 - 0.2% is not backed up. If you take the total deaths reported world-wide and the total cases reported world wide, the death rate remains at 5%. You can question the figures, and reporting can be bad in places, but it cuts both ways. I think the world-wide figures are a better average because at least we don't get biased sampling.
