I came tiptoe-ing here after a long hard exhausting work day ... terrifed to see what I got ---- and am thrilled! I'm now on my lucky number 13 and reading Lolita - a reread actually. I know just where my copy is too. I've had this in the TBR Towers for a few years planning to reread it as I last read it when I was a teen -- like 18 -- and at some point I read an interesting discussion about how a theme in it is Nabokov's commentary on America at the time -- which is that road trip they take I suspect. Anyway, I want to re-read it to see if I spot more than the scandalous (then) and salacioius aspects now. Plus it fits a birthday candle and a prompt in a couple other challenges. I am thrilled!

Set up your 100 list here (you can repeat books if you want-just look through others list to get an idea)

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Once you have set up your list, come back here and let Anita know you have set up your list and request a roll( plus make a note that you need 2 dice).

This is a great challenge for clearing out TBR. I've found some gems which have been on my tbr for years.

Anita a/k/a Train Management will get you started and explain it all to you. Plus she wrote and interprets the rules. But you might as well start making up your list of 100 books for your Clerk Gameboard. If you want to see what all playing did for their Clerk Gameboards, you can check out all here. You need 100 titles but it can be 25 or 50 that you repeat or 100 different ones.
A few tips we all could have used before we set up our boards:
1. Make sure to use books you can get when needed, and you do not have to read by a certain date for a book club or such.
2. Leave the doorstoppers off unless you really want to read it if the dice rolls you there. Ditto any genre you have to be in the mood for.
3. Variety works best.

Personally, I made sure to keep on shorter side - under 400 pages - and lighter reading. I have some particularly draining and time consuming cases this year so needed to keep the reading light.

Sabrina (wordstained) | 290 comments Ellen wrote: "I believe Sabrina is on #76 so I will move her the entire 15 spaces to #91 Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children."

Do I need to read #76 first and then move to #91 or is #91 in place of #76? Just need some clarity here since I haven't yet started #76. I was about to post my review for the book I just finished (my prior roll) tomorrow (well, now today here) and actually use a swap for #76 because I cannot find the darn book.

message 57: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Sabrina, yes you have to read #76 first. Swapping it out is fine, just make a note on your board.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12570 comments Train Riders, so sorry the board did not get updates last night. Went out to dinner with the old Girl Scout Moms last night. and left early and did not come home until late! Wonderful night, and apologize you ladies had to be the on the back end. Getting to it right now.

ETA I believe the board is up to date. I did a run through of all the Train Cars and hopefully have everyone in their correct seat. There were a few riders I had in the wrong spot, my apologies, but please remember to put a message here if that happens-you may get the wrong lunch or cocktail if Tom does not know where you are!

Joanne - I'm on space 44 now. I rolled a "1" last time, so the bolding on 44 doesn't show up very clearly.

I'm expecting a delightful sparkling wine from Tom and I don't want it to get warm while he's looking for me.

To get your move, you need to think ahead. Every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, Powerball numbers are drawn. Let me/us know at least 24 hrs in advance of one of these three days that you want to use your advantage. On the next day there is a drawing, we will google the Powerball numbers. We will average the lowest and highest numbers of the 6 digits and you may move ahead that amount.

Hi @getting back to reading! There are a lot of notes for you above, about this specific game.

Note- this is our big annual game and it might be hard to get set up mid-year. So just in case, I’d like to suggest a QUICK START to help you get reading with us right away with our monthly tag. You only have to pick one book to start (rather than 100 for the train). This month we’re reading books with the “adventure” tag. Just pick one, start reading, and ask some questions.

Here is a quick way to start:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/.... We all read this thread so it’s a good place to ask questions and get to know people.

Here are some reviews of books we read so far this month:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

There are other threads to introduce you to the group, and get answers but these two show you the core of our activities. This is a really friendly group and it sounds like you’re going to fit right in. You’ve already got your bags packed, so welcome!

Opps I just saw that you have your list already done. Incredible!!! The deadline for requesting new rolls is 3pm, but if Anita sees this tonight, I’m sure she’ll make an exception for you.

@ANITA - Shes’s ready for her FIRST roll (2 dice)

Getting back to reading, you probably mentioned it in another thread, but do you have a shorter name we can call you? (Sorry if I assumed the wrong gender.). I think you were smart to pick 25*4 books to start.

Kathleen - the Subdue Express will pull in on Friday around 3 or 3:30 PM -- just check back a bit before that to be sure Anita has caught your post and added you to the list, or doesn't have a question for you. You get 2 dice in your roll but our goddess in train management Anita will see that you are started out in good form.

Don't worry about figuring out everything immediately. We all took quite a few rounds to get our balance as the train rocketed along. Joanne who loves spreadsheets is assisting Anita with the tracking, in case you were wondering. Joanne oversees CGI Tom Hanks to make sure he's keeping drinks and snacks and such in steady supply. Oooh and wait until you get to the Baggage Car! The schedule of what spots on the board are in each car is in the first message in the Consolidated Gameboards thread.

Though you have to wait a day, it's probably a good thing because the Cabanna Boys in the Caboose are working all night decorating to welcome you, restocking the bar and buffet, cleaning up the mess from those of us lingering there - and from the party last night. I know because I was dining tonight in the 'cabanna' outdoor seating at Nice Matin, a restaurant on the UWS of Manhattan. There was not a cabanna boy to be found so I assume they are hard at work prepping.

Either that or they wanted to have n0thing to do with 3 lawyers having dinner together.

message 74: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12921 comments Depending on the lawyers, why not? Especially if they have a little French going on..... So glad you had a good meal and a lovely night out Theresa.

I made the smart move of putting books that have been lingering on my TBR but are between 150 and 300 pages. I am knocking a lot of things off. But I should have paid attention to the part where it might not be so difficult to find! I figured a large library network in Boston would have everything and rather quickly. Which has largely worked. But my next Subdue book (Lioness of Judah?) I had to order on Amazon, for $6. I just checked and its been shipped. Its halfway here, dancing about various carrier facilities. Dang that thing was hard to find, but it will appear as it does. Seems to be in the US, but no locations were given. This should be interesting.....

I love that you've gotten into the spirit so quickly! If I haven't said it yet, welcome. Hope you enjoy the ride!

message 77: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11685 comments I'm Cindy, by the way (in Calgary, Alberta, Canada). I am one of the admins here (and I am playing Subdue the Shelf, but I also often fill in to do the dice rolling when Anita is away... though I don't know the rules nearly so well, and leave any special rolls to her to figure out when she returns, unless it's something simple!).

Anyway, I do the group "shelving" (I am also a librarian in "real life"), so on the group's bookshelf, you'll see all the books we've read over the years for each tag and for each official annual challenge. People are welcome to add their own, but each month, I will go back through to make sure everything has been added.

Sorry, I probably should have added all this to the intro/welcome thread, but here I am. :-)

Good morning, I just want to clarify that "2" is not your roll. It is how many dice I will be rolling for you this afternoon.

I usually post the rolls between 3 and 4 pm.

Your final fitting for your engineer uniform is scheduled. Cabanna Boys are busy restocking your favorite snacks and drinks, and making sure your favorite seating choice cleared, cleaned and positioned in the Caboose.

Theresa | 15525 comments @ Kathleen a/k/a Getting Back to Reading - Welcome to the Subdue Train and the Caboose in particular. Settle onto a chaise and read. Our Cabanna Boys will keep your plate of snacks and preferred beverage full. If you are wondering which desserts and pastries are best, I suspect our quality control tester Sue can give you some tips. Personally I go for the lemon squares and handmade Mondel's chocolates.

Want to edify that Gnarly and I are having a much lovelier relationship this second time around. Could it be that he knows my next book for Subdue is about a lion tamer? In any case, we are getting along beautifully. Amazing what some cocktails will do! Along with an open mind and heart for second chances.

Ah, my dear, you have to go all the way back to January and read forward. But just to help out the newbie, Meet the Cabanna Boys!

Amy brought Gnarly on board later - probably February. The Subdue Express has grown and changed, occasional redecorating and new staffing, as the months rolled by. We had a new car added just a month ago although so far only one person has (almost) graced it - I had a narrow escape finishing my book and being moved by Tien just as it was being hooked up.
