Amy | 12921 comments I posted my review and I am ready for another roll!

One porter dice roll! I think that I may have to use a swap. Four of the next six books I have already read. Three of them were my last three subdue the shelf lands, and the fourth I accidentally just finished. But I think I have a swap book already out of the library that will be higher pages than all of them.

That has been my issue but I didn't think a swap would solve it. My understanding is that if you have read the book you land on, you have to read the one in the space before, and if you have read that one, you have to go back one more, etc. till you find one you haven't read. Then if you don't want to read that book, you can swap. You don't move backward, you are still on whatever square you landed on, but you read the closest unread book going backward. That is how I am about to read books from my Porter board even though I am halfway through the Engineer board.

You are correct Robin except you can use a swap if you have one for any reason - even just not in the mood for that book. But you only have 2 swaps unless you win more ... so most of us are very careful as to when we use them. If you have any left, might solve some of your problem -- becuase you can use any book that's longer -- does not need to have been on a game board.

I agree with Theresa, you can use a swap for any reason.

Just curious… Did you read all the books on your board during game play, or did you read some of them before you landed on them? I haven’t noticed if anyone used up their whole board before.

Theresa is correct. If you have a swap available you may use it for any reason and when you wish.

I used only 25 books, 4 times each and deliberately chose books I planned to read in the next couple months for in-person book groups or other GR groups & challenges. So sometimes when I landed on a book I had already read it. Then when I got into the 2nd and 3rd group of 25, there were even more already read. And it didn't help that I was sent back twice. So the moral is, make sure to put more different books on your board than you can read in the time it takes to get through it.

Recently I only had a few books unread. I could swap for one, but I would end up landing on it again shortly, so why bother? I literally have 2 books left now unread.

message 261: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15525 comments Robin P wrote: "I could swap for one, but I would end up landing on it again shortly, so why bother..."

Use swap because it gets you 2 rolls closer to being off the board, AND 2 more rolls that could get you an award or special advantage that gets you off your poorly conceived board.

message 262: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12921 comments I never put a subdue book on my list more than three times. But with the Randomizer and the dice, I still got stuck! I won a swap so I have three to use this round. It’s just the way the list fell out that these thee books were so often clumped together and I landed on all of them.

What a non-fiction time I am having!!!

Maybe I'm not understanding. I can use a swap but I still need to read 1 book before getting another roll, it doesn't get me new rolls any faster, I just might like the book better. Luckily for me, the way the rules work, I can be reading books that are behind me but I still move forward on my track.

Hi Robin,

Forgive me because I haven't been following this saga that closely, but I just wanted to make sure you are aware that a swap can be used to read any other book you want. It doesn't need to be one on the existing board; it can be a library book or something else. The only rule is it needs to be the same length or longer than the one you are swapping out.

message 267: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3511 comments That gives me a 5+6 so I will find a book on someone else's shelf to read.

LibraryCin | 11685 comments Robin P wrote: " but you read the closest unread book going backward. ..."

I think you can go one forward or backward. But don't quote me on that. (Backward would make more sense, though, as it's less likely you'll land on it again.)

ETA: I should have read through the rest of the replies before replying. I see no one else mentioned this (but I thought I was given that option for the one I had accidentally read before landing on it?), so maybe I am incorrect.

Yes, I am aware that any longer book can be swapped in but for instance, I have one book left. If I do a swap for it and read something else, the next roll will take me to the same book where it is listed in the next group of 25, and I would need another swap.

message 271: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5747 comments From the original rules when we had only one track:

IF your game board is not 100 unique titles, and you happen to land on a title you've already read -- you may read the book one space behind you, but you do not move your space on the board. If you already have read the book one space behind you, you will continue to look at titles moving backward one space at a time until you hit a book you haven't read. You will read that book (and please denote it in the space where you landed). If you have read EVERY book on your board, there will be a process by which you supply new titles for the number of spaces remaining, and we will randomize those titles creating a new board for you going forward.

I think I haven't been marking the books I read in the right spaces, I will correct that. As far as having read every book, I assumed that I would just go back to the Porter list rather than supplying new titles. The Porter list is almost all unread titles and I don't mind using that list as long as I don't have to physically move back there.

message 272: by Robin P (last edited Jul 18, 2023 04:59PM) (new)

Robin P | 5747 comments OK, I have spent the good part of an hour cleaning up my Engineer board so that it is clearer where I landed each time and which books I read when I had to go backwards.

I am on Space 57, unless I get a special roll I will be on this board for some time. Each time I will need to go back to the Porter board and read the closest one I haven't read. This means I can predict in order which books I will be reading, which wasn't the original intent of the game. Would the Mods prefer if I do what was suggested in the original rules:
you supply new titles for the number of spaces remaining, and we will randomize those titles creating a new board for you going forward

I could supply 43 new titles (all different for sure this time!) and you can randomize them. Sorry for all the confusion caused by my self-defeating strategy! (including plenty of confusion on my part)

I think you are remembering a special advantage you get if your dice roll any combo that equal 7. If that happens you can read the book you land on, or the one before or the one after.

That was the very first special roll I got and since it was at very beginning of the game, I read the book I landed on.

A couple ideas for mods and Robin to consider to get her out of her holle and return the random reading nature to the game...

1. If she has read the book she lands on in engineer, she reads the one at same number from her porter board instead or is she read that one, read one back as on engineer board

2. Simply replace the 41 books on your engineer board that you have read with the books at the same number on the Porter board. You would leave the ones from porter you read.

An added problem with leaving you with 41 books on your board that you have already read is that no one can move you either to a new book to read should they have a roll allowing that and Ursula oulls your name.

But you really did get yourself in a fix, Robin!

Maybe I misunderstood, but if you read all the books on your board, you should be able to move to the next board, not go backward.

Unfortunately for me, you can only move according to dice rolls, not books read.

Amy | 12921 comments I landed on a two, which puts me at 23. The Mermaid’s Sister, which I just finished in audio. I’m not going to use my swap yet. I might very well need it for my next dice roll given that the three books I have already read for subdue lay ahead. I plan (for Now) to read the Spy’s Gamble, my number 21 instead. It arrives for $11 by Amazon on Sat, which coincides with my return to the USA. I am deep in Homecoming anyway, followed by Legends and Lattes. Everyone who needs to keep track follow that so far?
