Joy, Kate's 1-1 moves you back 3-not reading someone elses book
I currently have you at 46, so 3 back w2ould be your next book, # 43.

Anita will have to check on Heather and Amy's rolls, I do not have access to that

Ohhh, that's fascinating. I really need to review the rules; I'm starting to forget what I can and can't do.

I have three swaps sitting, I know that much, but I've been curious about everything I've landed on so far, so I haven't used them!

KateNZ | 4100 comments Zero rush, lovely challenge admins - we all have plenty of other challenges to read for. Just as long as everything is ok xxx

So glad you had a lovely evening JoAnne! As long as you haven’t spoiled your appetite for the train picnic 😉

Kate 2
Robin 4
Joy 5
Rachel 3-6

So sorry for my miss yesterday. This new job is making me feel so pressured. There's a deadline on Tuesday, and I feel like I'm going to miss it, and it's stressing me out so badly. I agreed to 20 hrs/week, and it's been considerably over . . .and my regular job (the one I like) will be so busy this week too.

At any rate, there will be more rolls later today if more are requested. These are yesterdays's.

Joanne, I've noticed that I'm still on #24 on the Engineer board. So just wanted to let you know that I was moved by Joy on July, 23 to spot #29.

message 418: by Rachel N. (last edited Jul 30, 2023 10:11AM) (new)

Rachel N. | 2241 comments No worries Anita. Your mental health is more important than a game. I noted this on my board but I've already read the book I landed on so I'll read the book before it for the game.

Edited to add I just made it to the private parlor car! Celebrating at our continuing picnic.

Theresa | 15525 comments @Anita and JoAnne: in the Consolidated Gameboards, Station Master Gameboard has gone missing, though list of its finishers remains.

Now did Ursula shake things up so vehemently today Sunday that she tossed all those working through Station Master off the board and back to Engineer? Would not put it past her!

I think it’s more likely that we just don’t have anyone on those loops right now. I was the only person on station master for a long time. I think Kate NZ was next behind me.

message 423: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments As for the Station Master, it's purposefully like that because no one is on it and no one has been on it for weeks!!! Why scroll past 100 blank numbers if we don't have to.

Anita, I really feel for you, there is always a learning curve with a new job, even if you have similar experience. That makes it exhausting even if it’s your only job! It might help to have a talk with the hiring manager or HR, especially re the number of hours you’re putting in. They might have no idea how time consuming the tasks are, and if you don’t speak up, they might never know. ( Depending on how your job is classified, they should be paying you for all those hours, not just 20. ) I’m sure they want it to work out too, so don’t feel like you have to be a hero.

Also, let me know if I can help too. I’m almost always available in the afternoons.

Pam, I'm so sorry, but you've been "shook".

Please go back 3 after you finish your current book.

message 426: by Anita (last edited Jul 30, 2023 12:58PM) (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9281 comments Thank you so much for this empathetic note.

Frankly, it's an entrepreneurial situation, so I'm reporting directly to the business owner. She's done the tasks so she think she knows how long they take. The process is not designed well so my interactions with her are not really going how I think either of us might have hoped. It's a shame because the work itself is interesting to me, but there's no ramp up time. It's extremely detail oriented, and I think the owner wants someone who can read her mind and just make it work exactly as she pictures it in her brain . . .which I sorta understand, but this job requires a specific expertise I don't have. I asked them multiple times about why they weren't hiring someone with that expertise, and they insisted that personality fit was more important. I am not sure their assessment of that was very good nor do I actually agree with it. They should hire someone with the expertise who also has a personality they think can work.

Before I was hired, they didn't tell me there was someone else in the job that didn't work out. I can completely see why it didn't.

I’ll do the rolls around 8am NZ time (about now) so that’s a little later than normal, but you probably want me to have had at least one cup of coffee first, aye!!

In my fantasies, I am in Station Master .....

That makes sense but it does mean some staffing finding their job descriptions having to pick up the slack while others are having an extended vacation!

Oooh, Ursula is going to have to behave with our Kiwi Lawyer Kate on the job!

message 432: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments Hah. The available evidence (may it please the Court, I present a large number of #1 and #2 rolls on my Engineer Board) suggests Ursula is thumbing her nose at me. Recent paperwork suggests she might have joined the sovereign citizen movement …

But she might be bribable with picnic food.

KateNZ | 4100 comments Rolls for 31 July

Ellen - 1
KateNZ - 6

BC, I gave Ursula a Mexican brownie, but I think it didn’t kick in until after Ellen’s roll! Can you whip up another batch and we’ll dose her earlier tomorrow?

In the meantime, folks, I’ll set up a new thread for our August rolls. Though of course mine is already an August roll {{living in the future}}} so if this book is tagged adventure, I’m out of luck …

message 438: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments I’m putting myself on the roll list for tomorrow. Man, that was a disappointing book. Fingers crossed for something better this time.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8414 comments Oh .. I will whip up a batch of Mexican Brownies (have a little chipotle seasoning added with just a hint of spice). I'll even make two batches ... one with pecans and one nut-free.

Pam | 498 comments Anita wrote: "Shake It Up Sunday

Oh no!!! Can we just pretend I didn't see this? 😂😂😂

message 441: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments Oh Pam, I feel your pain!! 🤣🤣🤣 It’s always such a nuisance. Ursula is storing this one up for me I think (probably timed specially to move me back to a previous board, like she did to Theresa)

We had a literal shake up on Sunday - the earthquake was only a 4.6 and quite deep but a sharp shock almost underneath us. Sigh. Nothing broken though.

message 442: by Pam (new)

Pam | 498 comments If Ursula had just held off for one more week I would have been in a much better position to deal with this! Oh well, now I just have to make a harder decision for my next move.

And it's much better than a real shake up, that's for sure :) Yikes, that sounds scary. We do not have earthquakes where I live. We're in tornado land.

message 443: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments Now tornados would completely freak me out!

message 444: by Pam (new)

Pam | 498 comments Anita, do we get the tag bonuses for Shake It Up moves?

And where did we land on using multiple bonuses per turn? If I need to combine some bonuses to get moved far enough on my next turn that I'm back on a book I haven't read yet, is that possible?

message 445: by Pam (new)

Pam | 498 comments KateNZ wrote: "Now tornados would completely freak me out!"

They can be pretty scary! It didn't used to be that bad, but Tornado Alley has shifted a little bit in the last decade and we're on the outskirts now. The big ones are horrifying.

message 446: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think the answers are:

- yes to tag bonuses for shake it up (no reason why not)
- only one bonus move per roll

But if that takes you to something you’ve already read, you stay on that number but read the book behind it (or whichever book next behind that which you haven’t read yet. Just note that on your board

Or you can use a swap if you still have one in hand and don’t want what you’ve landed on (doesn’t have to be on your board - it just has to be at least the same number of pages as the book you landed on)

message 447: by Theresa (last edited Jul 31, 2023 05:54PM) (new)

Theresa | 15525 comments @ Pam - I had no bonuses to use when Ursula shook me back the first time, so I don't know if you can use them. I was at the very beginning of my Porter Board. That first shake put me back to a book I had read, the first on Porter board, and I read the book back one behind. Ursula shook me back again the following Sunday - back to prior board. Then before I read any of those books, Tien got a special roll that allowed her to move whoever Ursula drew and it was me! Tien moved me forward past the logjam at beginning of my Porter board. It was ages before I got to roll again!

message 448: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments The rule for Shake It Up (see Porter board intro) says that book has to be read before you can move again. So I’d take from that that you can’t use a bonus to shift you off the book you’ve been ‘shook’ to.

But you could still read the book behind (if you’ve already read that one) or take a swap.

Once ‘Shake’ is dealt with you can roll and use a bonus at the same time if you wish. Actually gets you the same result in the end.

Appears twice between the 2 challenges about 25 minutes in.
