message 208: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) Well, I have already joined in a few conversations in this group so let me take a few moments to introduce myself. My name is Jeffrey and I presently live near Nashville, Tennessee with my wife of 22 years (which is quite a record in her family and mine).

Favorite book: So many to choose from but probably Ender's Gamesince it is the one I have reread the most.
Favorite movie: Definitely Top Gun since I have seen it umpteen million times.
Favorite non-alcoholic drink: Sweet iced tea or orange juice
Favorite alcoholic drink: Pina Colada or Strawberry Daquiri
Favorite food: Lasagna or anything else Italian with lots of cheese and tomato sauce.
Favorite Dessert: Death by Chocolate cake with a side of ice cream.
Favorite Television show: Depends on my mood, but I really like The History Channel and H2, HBO Real Time with Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Home Improvement, Last Man Standing, M*A*S*H
Favorite Hobbies: Reading (of course), writing, singing (I am a classically trained baritone), writing and playing music on my guitar
Favorite music: Can't really say since my taste in music is like my tastes in books, very eclectic. No one genre can define my tastes in either. Not big on HipHop or Rap music though or books that are more about the sex than plot, characters and substance.
Other info: Even though I have been married for 22 1/2 years and have a daughter who just graduated from high school all while being a single mom, working two jobs and participating in marching band (she graduated with distinction by the way

message 209: by Jessica (last edited May 25, 2015 04:44PM) (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) I am also gay and have known since I was about 10 years old. I am a devout Catholic married to a Pentecostal wife with a daughter who wants to be baptized into the Mormon church when she turns 18 in a couple of months. And finally I have an 17 month old grandson that I love dearly and can't get enough of.

message 214: by Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (last edited May 25, 2015 06:23PM) (new)

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Favorite book: Only one????? Probably Eleven Hours by Paullina Simons since i seem to read it every couple of years. And Winnie-the-Pooh
Favorite movie: Pretty Woman (I always cry!)
Favorite non-alcoholic drink: Green tea with lemon
Favorite alcoholic drink: Only one?????? Currently a nice Shiraz, but Gin and water with lemon in the summer.
Favorite food: Roast lamb with mint sauce and home-made gravy.
Favorite Dessert: Only one???? Anything chocolate! Or tried a feijoa and almond crumble the other day that I am going to be making again sometime this week...
Favorite Television show: British comedies (Open All Hours, Dad's Army) and British detective series (Midsommer Murders, Taggart, The Last Detective)
Favorite Hobbies: Reading (of course), writing, gardening (though these days it seems to be more admiring other peoples gardens), walking, spending time with family and friends.
Favorite music: Jack Johnson, Meatloaf, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, George Thorogood... Don't like HipHop or Rap music though or books that are more about the sex than plot, books about terrorism or world wide epidemics.
Other info: Love: the beach, spending time with my husband just hanging out, singing in the shower (if the house is empty - I am tone deaf!), jigsaws, crosswords, chocolate. Don't like: reality TV (i often wonder whose sense of reality it is), rude/cruel people, litterbugs, brussel sprouts. 8:D

message 215: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) I am with you there. I don't mind sex in a book if it is essential to the plot, but I hate books that are all about the sex.

message 216: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Welcome Jeffery and thanks for sharing your list. I like how you organized it and might have a go at that as well.

message 217: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments Welcome Jeffrey and thank you for sharing your list. Your daughter sounds like a very motivated young lady! It's not easy for us single mothers at the best of times so for her to work 2 jobs and STILL graduate with distinction is quite an achievement. She must have a very supportive family :)

message 218: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) She does indeed. Her mom and I told her when she got pregnant that we wanted her to complete her education and that we would do whatever she needed us to do to help make that happen. It did not hurt that she was driven to graduate with her friends that she had made over the past 13 years.

Now she is getting ready to go to college. The state of Tennessee will pay for her to go to a two year state college of her choice which will help her as she can get all of her academics out of the way before she has to decide on a major. It will also help keep her student debt as she will only have to pay for two years of college instead of four. She wants the best for her son, and that means getting her degree so she can get a better job.

She is very motivated and very driven, and that makes me proud. Not only are her mom and I doing what we can, but Jax's other grandparents have stepped up to the plate in a big way by helping her with daycare, giving her a place to live while she goes to school (our place is much too small for four people), and even helped her buy a car so she could get to and from school and her two jobs.

Rachel has a huge support system in place, and as long as she hqs got family she always will.

message 220: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Hi, Jeffrey

I've live in Nashville all my life. Welcome.

message 221: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) Thank you! Which part of Nasville do you live in? I am in the eastern part of the county just a few minutes from Mt. Juliet!

message 222: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I'm right in the middle of Davidson County. I can stick my hand out and touch the city:) If I stick my other hand out, I can touch Rivergate, which is where I practically live because of the mall--LOL!

message 223: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessical1961) LOL!!! I don't live too awful far from Rivergate. I don't get out there much except maybe during the holiday season. I used to work at the Walgreen's in Rivergate years ago. Maybe one of these days we will have to meet up at the Books-A-Million there on Gallatin Road in Rivergate. That is probably my wife's favorite book store.

message 224: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Sounds good, but not while tennis season is here. (I don't know if you been here long enough to realize it yet, but I'm a tennis addict. When it's on, there's no communication with other humans. Even my daughter knows that if something happens, she'll just have to dial 911 with her good hand--just kidding:)

Books-a-Million is my daughter's favorite hang-out, too.

It's so nice to be on a forum with a fellow native!

message 225: by Christine (last edited May 27, 2015 01:07PM) (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I grew up in Oak Ridge, Groovy and graduated from Vanderbilt. I didn't have a car though so never really got to know Nashville. I did enjoy my time there though.

message 226: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Wow, Chistine. All this time, I would see your name here and never knew you were a native Tennessean, too. I take it you no longer live in Oak Ridge. But, it's so nice to meet you here.

Vanderbilt--impressive!

message 227: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Thanks, Groovy. I've been in balmy Minnesota for 4 decades now! I guess that makes me a Minnesotan now.

message 228: by Skye (new)

Skye | 636 comments But, it's important to note that Christine LOVES the music from that region---Tennessee, and other Southern States. Did you live near the university, Chris?

message 231: by Vy (new)

Vy (vy_ava) | 22 comments Hi Everyone! Please forgive me for taking so long to introduce myself. :) My name is Vy, I'm the girl from the alphabet, ABC...V. When I sign a letter or note with ~ V, I'm being ironic. ;)

10. I'm Canadian.
9. I believe you should voice your opinions, but never start with "No offence, but..."
8. I love thunderstorms and jumping in puddles on a rainy day.
7. I don't wear socks to bed because in my dreams I like going barefoot.
6. Outwardly I am quiet, but inwardly, my mind is quite chatty.
5. My Shadow is a redhead...
4. I'm a tall glass of introversion with a shot of shyness (I'm a giant at 5' 3 1/2"). ;)
3. I rather be told I'm "cherished" than "loved": cherished is being loved for yourself, despite all of your flaws, real or perceived.
2. I have two names: one name that will take me into tomorrow and the other lasts only for today.
1. There isn't a shade of blue that I dislike, but it's not my favourite colour. Green grounds me...red sets me on fire.

Happy Reading...

~ V ;)

Vy (vy_ava) | 22 comments Jean wrote: "Vy, you strike me as someone with the spirit of a poet - gentle, whimsical, fun-loving."

Thank you Jean!

(Giggling) "Gentle" is not a word my Mum would use to describe me. She calls me The Wind because I'm the wind made visible. Only the wind can be both present and elsewhere. So when the door frame, chair, and table edge hits me, I am mostly, elsewhere. I'm the cause of many object casualties. :)

Mum: Vy, what happened to the lamp?
V: Uhm, I cracked a joke and the lamp fell to pieces. ;)

message 239: by Skye (new)

Skye | 636 comments I will pipe up with Jean: Your articulation is amazingly lyrical, and quite unusual.

Also, Vietnamese elders use imagery to teach life lessons, and they are notorious for dishing out insults in a round-about way. While you contemplate their words, the sting of the insult fade to the background. It's an art form. I've been a defiant recipient of these verbal gifts! :)

message 245: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2382 comments Haha, that's pretty funny! So you're left scratching your head, wondering if that was really an insult or what the heck just happened?

message 247: by Vy (new)

message 248: by Skye (new)

Skye | 636 comments I don't know the meaning, Vy, but I am familiar with it and the culture, people, etc. I don't know, however, if you speak French and Vietnamese or just Vietnamese, and whether or not your family came from Saigon ( Ho Chi Minh) or from the countryside.
