Darlene Jones (darlene_jones) | 153 comments When Principal, Abby Davies, shows Curtis a page of scribbles and asks him to try to figure it out, Curtis isn’t sure what to think. He likes Miss D and all. She isn’t too bad for a school teacher. You can talk to her and she doesn’t make fun. But, sheesh, a secret code from aliens? That’s just too scifi for him. To keep her happy, he says he’ll help. Thing is, once he starts studying the scribbles, he can see messages.

Coder Guy, as Abby callswhoever is sending the messages, wants her to fix things. What things? Abby and Curtis find the answer when letters with Abby’s signature appear in newspaper offices. The things asked for come true. But, who’s writing the letters? Coder Guy? Or Abby?

Then the reporter shows up. What is a war correspondent doing in their little town? He says he loves Abby, but he sells her story to the world; her face splashed over every television and computer screen. The next day Miss D and Curtis are the only ones who remember the reports.

That’s when real fear sets in.

Lynette Sofras (manicscribbler) | 5 comments Hello,

My debut sci-fi short was written with my son and published last month. We're hoping to produce an anthology of stories in this particular sci-fi sub-genre if we receive enough interest.

The story is Surveillance:

At six years old, Harrison Avery is already considered a prodigy and, in a world suspicious of intelligence, that places him in jeopardy. His parents live in fear of his extraordinary IQ being discovered - and will go to any lengths to hide it. But how do you disguise genius in a six year old when you are under constant surveillance?

Although most of my work involves career-based writing services and news/informational articles, I have also become involved with science fiction. My eBook, The Metamorphosis of Timothy Dunn, is listed on Goodreads and available online. I'm working on a second novel, Alpha C, involving a rescue mission within the Alpha Centauri star system. I'm easy to find through fb and online, and welcome comments/suggestions or just a quick "hello" from fellow writers and readers.

Joni Fisher (jonimfisher) | 27 comments Phobos Manned Mission
Phobos Manned Mission by J.M. Fisher

What happens when five adults must spend years together in a ship the size of a mobile home? Conflict. This story explores the basic cycle of emotions that drive scientific discovery--curiosity, pride, and fear--through the example of five astronauts sent to recover an alien artifact found on Mars. Mankind's curiosity demands the mission; pride endangers it; fear dominates it.

Will these freedom seeking gay explorers help America move beyond the dominant fundamentalism that upholds the belief in inequality and scarcity? Will America accept the new paradigm offered by The World Federation, or will there be war?

Meinos Kaen | 4 comments Hello, thar. Meinos Kaen here!

I've just recently published my first book, Proud Parents Blog, a small prelude to what will be my first major work but it nonetheless contains everything you need to know about the world the story is set in, and many subplots and elements that will add to what will be the overall experience.

Proud Parents Blog by Meinos Kaen

It focuses on the history of group of people who came together thanks to a blog, and the many problems they face daily concerning the world they live in and, most of the times, their family members, in a future where sometimes parents need protection from their own children, following a catastrophe that has changed the Earth and the human race itself.

Since I'm a beginner, I had gone into it not exactly prepared -I didn't even know what an advance copy was-. I'm making up for lost time and overlooked details.

Right now I'm not looking for sales, but feedback on the book. Of course, I will provide free copies for the volunteers in exchange for that and, if you would be so kind, reviews on GR and Amazon.

I thank you in advance for your attention and I hope you will enjoy the read. If you're interest, just private message me and I'll hook you up with your favourite format. :)

Susan (kyriel) | 2 comments Hi everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. My Christmas began early December with the publication of "Games of Adversaries" by Artema Press.
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16...

'Games of Adversaries' is a character-driven novel about contrasts. It takes a marvellously medieval-type guy and another from an advanced civilisation and throws them together. The first title for it was 'Castles and Spaceships'. It takes them through tragedy and laughter, terror and joy, but mainly an understanding of why we live as we do and how we cope with tragedy.

Me? I'm from UK originally but now live in Alberta, Canada. Nice to meet you all!

John Siers | 45 comments Happy New Year, everyone. I'm a bit late getting here; my book was actually published two months ago. For those who missed that highly unpublicized event, here's a quick intro:

The people at the Deep Space Research Institute are a pretty smart bunch; so smart in fact, that they've figured out how gravity works. More importantly, they've figured out how to make it work as a propulsion system. Of course, they're going to tell everyone about their discovery... eventually.

But first, they've got a few things to do, like build a few gravity-powered spacecraft, establish a permanent settlement on the Moon, and declare themselves an independent nation. Of course, that presumes they can get all of that done before the U.S. government finds out, shuts them down, and puts them all in prison for various crimes against the state. But getting there is only half the fun.

Welcome to The Moon and Beyond, the first novel in the saga of the Lunar Free State. It's available in hardcover, paperback, or ebook on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You can read more, or order the book at a discount through my website at http://www.lunarfreestate.com

The second novel in the series, Someday, the Stars is in final edit, scheduled to be published in mid-2013.

Please, give it a look, and maybe a read, a review, and... OK, enough self-promotion. Comments via the website are welcome, or leave a post on my Goodreads blog.

Map Whitman (MapWhitman) | 4 comments Journey to Diappeared: Discovery

Will the future destroy our civilization? Will the Earth revolt against the demons humanity has unleashed? Will humans transform themselves to rebuild a more compassionate society? Would you? Or is it already too late?
The rising storms of corporate greed, peak oil, climate change, pollution, species extinction, new viruses, and over-population have wrought an apocalypse in the not-too-distant future. Life there is recognizable, and yet a hauntingly contradictory blend of high tech and horse-and-buggy. Living on the precipice of this apocalypse, Alma and her brother Uly toil to maintain a mountain homestead safely tucked away from the pitiless corporations which control what remains of a technologically advanced civilization. There, Uly’s mysterious panic attacks might go unnoticed by everyone but his family. But then their parents, working for a corporation to study a virus that attacks the human genetic code, join the long lists of people who have inexplicably Disappeared.
Their mountain paradise shattered, Alma and Uly must make a choice. Do they hobble along in relative safety without their parents? Or do they risk a journey to Disappeared, knowing the corporation will send assassins to stop them? Their extraordinary odyssey through rugged mountains, parched high deserts, dangerous squatter towns, and surreal cutting-edge walled cities leads to cataclysmic discovery – about their civilization, their government, their environment, and ultimately about what it means to be human.

Hope you like it!

Imran Siddiq (imransiddiqwriter) | 3 comments Writing is something that I never should have stopped doing since when I was a child. Started it again in 2007, and never looked back.

I'm Imran Siddiq. I work in the Health Service, do lots of work and am always trying to improve. The evenings are mine to own, and that's where I come alive with writing and digital art.

Have written 6 novels, and just released my first last month. I won't spam, so it's up to you if you click me and read it. (it's a YA Sci Fi with Romance).

I am still chasing the traditional route, and although I am haven't been lucky, I have received great feedback, and am regularly attending writing festivals.

My ethos is to write and trust the support that so many other writers give to one another. You are not alone. We are here.

My preferred genre is YA Sci Fi, and I love developing what we know and turning it into something amazing, yet, beleiavable.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 43 comments My YA Sci-fi, Frontier Incursion, was published in October last year. It's an eBook, available on all major eBook platforms. The publisher, Hague Publishing, is a new eBook publisher, specialising in Sci-fi and Fantasy.

"For Shanna, joining the Scout Corps had been a dream come true. The Scouts were charged with expanding their knowledge of Frontier, a hostile planet their ancestors had crashlanded on 300 years before. As the youngest in her class, Shanna struggles to find acceptance and respect amongst her older peers - a task made more difficult by the fact that she has not just one, but two of the colonists' huge feline companions, their starcats.

On a routine patrol, she and the other cadets are swept up in the greatest challenge yet to be faced by the settlers of Frontier. Now they find themselves on the very frontline of a war they knew nothing about, and possibly the Federation of Race's last chance against the hostile Garsal. Suddenly their world has changed, and in ways never dreamed of by Shanna and her fellow scouts."

I just published my first book, Immunity. It is available on Amazon Kindle.

It is a dystopian future novel where people are living indoors because of the overuse of antibiotics and the destruction of people's immune systems which also created superbugs. Crazy scientists and a independent group are both seeking to once again return outdoors. One girl has the power to save them all, and thus is at the center of controversy.

My intent is for people to enjoy this novel. I hope you enjoy it.

message 284: by Peter (new)

Peter B Forster (peterbforster) | 20 comments I published my first novel in September. Mr Charalambus and the One Soul. Without fanfare and even less knowledge about social media and marketing. I have struggled to engage with the process of promotion. It has been my nature to allow my personality to work for me but in this virtual world I struggle to know how best to market that. I am unsure about forums and genre discussions, other people seem so much more assured in this setting and I am never convinced I am in the right place at the right time. Anybody else feel like that? My book the first of what has become a trilogy is a genre bender in my view, as it spans parallel worlds, has fantasy characters,a thrilling and mystical quest, romance and spiritual awakening. It has a thread of knowing humour and a nod at the cyclical notion of enduring souls and love. Give it a try I would be very grateful. Mr Charalambus-One_Soul. The best read EVER. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mr-Charalambu...

James Kemp (greencoatboy) | 8 comments Exodus Mike's Thread by James Kemp Free on Friday 1st March as part of a KDP Select Promotion. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Exodus-Mikes-...

The story (at 15,000 words its a short story rather than a novel) is set in 2050, pretty recognisable with only a little fast forward to get us to where the story needs to be.

It follows a single character who gets invovled in a conspiracy within the US Military to thwart the rise of the religious anti-science groups that are taking over the country.

It was written as part of a longer work (I have another 45,000 words to edit it all into a coherent whole sometime soon) when I participated in NaNoWriMo last November.

Like everyone else on here as a writer, I'd be grateful for feedback.

Lori Lopez (lorirlopez) | 12 comments Lori R. Lopez

These are some of my stories and books containing elements of Science Fiction, along with other genres:

The Lycaning

The Lycaning by Lori R. Lopez

PART ONE: How far will a mother go for the sake of her son? The answer is a disturbing twist on the lycan legend. Charles is a man living with illness and deformity, working in a lab with his scientist mom whose primary goal has become the desperate search for a cure to his debilitating disease. Their work releases a plague that will transform the civilized world into a savage jungle of kill or be killed. Is there hope for Mankind, or will these new creatures wipe out the human race? PART TWO: As a man schemes to capture the male and female werewolves, Charles discovers the truth behind his original disease and the secrets his mother was keeping. Werewolves, humans, and were-zombies clash in a world filled with change.

Bad Mood

Bad Mood by Lori R. Lopez

The cows and chickens have gone mad. So have the people of Dairy, Wisconsin. Three offbeat outcasts must come together to discover the town's dreadful secret in "Bad Mood", a quirky and humorous tale of science fiction and horror. Why is everyone else acting insane? What does it have to do with the corporation that seems to control the town? Will it spread to other cities, to the entire world? You won't know whether to laugh or scream . . .

Monstrosities

Monstrosities by Lori R. Lopez

A weird boy becomes very twisted while growing up and conducts Frankensteinish experiments on those around him. Chills, suspense, obsession and dark humor await in this novelette by Lori R. Lopez. WARNING: Some content may be disturbing to sensitive readers.

Some Thing

Some Thing by Lori R. Lopez

Darkly offbeat and comical, this eco-thriller takes the warning not to drink the water to extremes and exposes a very real scenario: toxic dumping along the border. These things have a way of bouncing back with a vengeance. That is the case for one unfortunate fellow who forgets to heed the warning. But perhaps it was already too late. Something's happening and it isn't pretty. It isn't friendly. It's . . . some THING!!!

Unnatural

Unnatural by Lori R. Lopez

A Thin Man wanders into a world of trouble after the carnival that was his home goes bust. Adrift and alone, missing his sideshow friends, things get pretty freaky when he accepts a job for a doctor who isn't as nice as he seems. The oddities in his barn may bite!

Out-Of-Mind Experiences

Out-Of-Mind Experiences by Lori R. Lopez

Ever heard the expression don't judge a book by its cover? Well, here's one you can. The cover art (by the author) conveys a fine line between "mad" and "madness". This diverse collection merges an array of genres such as horror and humor, modern and mythic, historic and supernatural. Sometimes gripping, often quirky, these tales are always inventive and thought-inducing. Journey through a broad spectrum of fictional adventures from angry cows to psychotic pets, through portals of terror and gateways of myth and fantasy. There is something for everyone within these pages.

An Ill Wind Blows

An Ill Wind Blows by Lori R. Lopez

The witty novel AN ILL WIND BLOWS will whisk you inside the belly of a storm who would be king. There an oddball bunch of nutty characters encounter some of the wildest imaginings of author Lori R. Lopez (DANCE OF THE CHUPACABRAS, CHOCOLATE-COVERED EYES, OUT-OF-MIND EXPERIENCES). Step through the cuckoo clock for a nonstop marathon of the bizarre where anything goes including zombie piranhas, ghosts, an alien, a witch, an axe-wielding elf, mad stalkers, a root monster, and a magic stone. The unique adventure depicts one night when an ordinary person lacking confidence must battle a wicked wind. The stakes are high as she, along with friends and foes, travels through a magical storm world that culminates in a ghost town populated by more than just spirits. This is a story that keeps delivering action and fun throughout. It is more than a single tale in a single genre. The book blends humor with elements of Horror, Paranormal and Fantasy.

Dance Of The Chupacabras

Dance Of The Chupacabras by Lori R. Lopez

A dark Wonderlandish "oddyssey" that merges and contrasts elements of humor and horror; fantasy, reality, and literary nonsense; legends, myths, and history; Pop, Mexican, and American Culture; wordplay and swordplay. It is a modern legend, a rumpus of revelrous rompery about being lost and choosing the road least traveled . . . the path unknown. Sandra Almazan | 18 comments Hi Everyone,

I haven't been active here much lately because I've been finishing up the sequel to Lyon's Legacy. It's called Twinned Universes, and it's finally available in both e-book and paper. Here's the blurb:

Paul Harrison always wanted to play Hamlet, but he never expected he’d live the role first. In the aftermath of a family tragedy on 21st century Earth, Paul discovers he’s the clone of Sean Lyon, his great-great-grandfather and a famous TwenCen musician. Suspecting his mother’s death was no accident, Paul comes up with a plan to trick the answers out of the great-uncle who had him cloned. But in order to make his plan work, Paul needs help from Sean himself—and Sean’s time is running out in the TwenCen universe next door. Although Paul’s family lives on the spaceship that travels between the universes, he’s never been allowed on TwenCen Earth. Now, with the help of his friends, his disguise-creating holoprojectors, and a quantum quirk, Paul must make his way to Sean while evading other time travelers who fear he’ll change the history of the TwenCen universe. If Paul is to achieve justice, he must not only risk his own life, but the wormhole connecting the universes. “To be or not to be” was a simple question in comparison....

It's also available on B&N and Smashwords.

Jeff Horton | 84 comments Cybersp@ce by Jeff W. Horton

"Both cyber attacks are strongly suspected to have been state-sponsored attacks.
“According to the source, one of yesterday’s assaults was launched against a specific group of computers at the United States Department of Defense. The DOD attack specifically targeted an electronic listing that contained the location of all intercontinental ballistic missile launch sites situated across the United States, along with a listing of all United States Navy ships that regularly carry nuclear armaments. This incursion has already been described by some as the worst breach of military security since the Cold War.
“In the second attack, which occurred at exactly the same time as the first, the attackers broke into a computer system at the U.S. Department of Energy and stole detailed data, plans, and schematics for the facilities and the computer systems at no fewer than fifty nuclear power plants scattered across the country. That means the intruders now have detailed information on nearly half of the hundred or so nuclear power plants built across the United States from Seattle to Florida. With the data they stole, the people or entity responsible for the attack could conceivably shut down nuclear power plants, damage systems, or trigger false alarms. It’s remotely possible that they could even cause some or all of the reactors in a plant to melt down.
“While Cyber Command refused to provide any specifics about the attacks, our source told us that yesterday’s cyber attacks against the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy were later traced back to locations inside of the People’s Republic of China. While the Chinese government vehemently denies having anything to do with yesterday’s attacks and offers to do what it can to help bring the perpetrators to justice, it seems clear to everyone at Cyber Command that these are only empty assurances."

K.L. Zolnoski (KLZolnoski) | 6 comments Wow! I'm loving this. So many interesting books posted. I'm going to go sifting through this thread again to add books to my wish list.

I saw this answered earlier but to add my opinion: Time Travel is a classic sci-fi sub-genera. The thing about sci-fi is that it is based upon, or extrapolated from scientifically plausible premises. As a bit of a purist about sci-fi I had to weigh in. ;)

Time Travel also shows up in fantasy settings as an excellent plot device. The difference is in how, which is to say, by what mechanism the author engages in time travel. That will determine if it is science fiction of fantasy.

I just published my first science fiction novel In The Flesh This is a post apocalyptic novel at heart but I must warn you, no zombies.

Here's the blurb if you're interested:

Mankind’s ancient curse has ravaged the world and even crept to the very doorstep of the Temple of the Three Waterfalls. Generations old treaties and accords have spared the Temple and those who call it home. Evadne, only daughter of the Holy Sybil, is content to remain hidden away in the remote mountain temple and study her craft.

But things are changing in the outside world. The emissary of a foreign prince has been sent to take Evadne away. Whispers of strange prophecies are heard from behind thick stone walls and the rumor of a powerful oracle to the east has the temple soothsayers involved. Despite her reluctance to leave, Evadne is ordered to go by none other than the Holy Sybil herself. So she must venture out of her ancestral home in the company of a stranger.

Who she will meet along the way and what they will discover will change their world forever and redefine what it means to be human.

G.P. Francis (gpfrancis) | 5 comments I'm G.P.Francis, author of recently released (March 1st 2013) science-fiction thriller "Primed." I just found out about this group, and I think it's a great way to connect readers and writers outside the confines of the books they share. I'm not here to promote my novel as much as to promote the discussion of topics and themes raised within it. I'll be happy to respectfully answer any questions anyone has about the story, characters, technology, milieu, writing intent and so on. Thanks for reading! I look forward to hearing from you.

Eirik Gumeny (egumeny) | 9 comments Yo. I am the author of the following, books which couple sci-fi with humor, in the tradition of Douglas Adams and Futurama.

Exponential Apocalypse by Eirik Gumeny

Exponential Apocalypse is the tender, heart-stirring tale of crappy jobs, a slacker cult, an alcoholic Aztec god, reconstituted world leaders, werewolves, robots, and the shenanigans of multiple persons living after the twentieth-aught end of the world. Fast-paced, frenetic, funny, and frequently fond of other f-words, Exponential Apocalypse is the only book that will have you looking forward to the end of the world.

Dead Presidents (Exponential Apocalypse, #2) by Eirik Gumeny

Dead Presidents, the second book in the Exponential Apocalypse series, continues where the first one left off, following Thor and company through a world rife with megalomanical clones, dinosaur armies, zombies, mad scientists, rhinos with lasers, and all manner of action and misadventure. Uproarious and unrestrained, Exponential Apocalypse: Dead Presidents puts the doody in doomsday and the ha in worldwide annihilation.

Matthew Curry (oldkingcurry) | 3 comments My name is Matthew Curry and I just finished writing and illustrating a sci-fi novel called "Under the Electric Sun." It's a young adult book filled with dark humor and sarcasm. I don't recommend it for young children. You can read more about the novel, and see some of the illustrations, on my blog. The URL is www.oldkingcurry.wordpress.com.

Will Vaart | 4 comments Hard Drop (Tyco Hale #1) by Will van der Vaart

Introducing my novel Hard Drop, hard-hitting military sci fi somewhere between Starship Troopers, Saving Private Ryan, and Apocalypse Now (currently available through Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Drop-ebook...

The Orbital Tactical Legion, an elite unit of high-altitude drop troops, is deployed on a world engulfed in a brutal civil war. Their objective is classified, marked only by coordinates leading them into a deserted city at the heart of the fighting.

From the beginning, everything possible goes wrong. A missile strike rocks the carrier mid-launch, and only a fraction of the unit reaches the surface alive.

Outmanned, outgunned, and scattered, with a hard deadline to orbital bombardment looming, it is up to Drop Commander Tyco Hale to rally his troops and reach their objective. But what they find, hidden deep in the tunneled passages under the city, will change everything about what he fights for and what he believes in. With the unit in tatters and loyalties divided, the choice he makes in the dark will seal all of their fates - and much more besides.

Please leave feedback if you read!
