Steph Bennion (stephbennion) | 184 comments A couple of Kindle special offers this week on indie YA space opera:

Hollow Moon - A kidnapping, a school band competition and an electric cat that eats everything in sight! For one week only from today, Hollow Moon is half price from Amazon USA / UK (and other Amazon sites), reduced from the usual recommended retail price of £2.99 / $3.99.

Secondly, for no other reason than we're currently as far away from Christmas as can possibly be, Three Tales For Christmas, my science-fiction short-story collection for the Kindle, is free on Tuesday 25 June and Thursday 27 June from Amazon UK / USA (and other Amazon sites).

Full details on both fine ebooks can be found at www.wyrdstar.co.uk/hollowmoon.html.

Thanks for reading! Steph.

T. (tjacksonking) | 38 comments If you like Harry Turtledove-style alternate future scifi novels, check out my new release Star Of islam by T. Jackson King . The blurb and inside flap info for this strong woman protag novel is below.

Blurb: "Helen Sarkissian wants to be the first Human to talk to Aliens. On a future Earth dominated by the Shi'ite world-state, only the Shi'ites have starships. But is signing on as crew aboard a Shi'ite-run starship the answer? It seems so, until, deep in space, the religious tensions that divide the crew threaten to erupt into violence. Will Helen's bisexual identity be her curse or her salvation from extremism? Will she and every Western Alliance humanist on board The Sword Of Islam end up dead? Or will human differences be put aside in the face of a more pressing threat: the Swarm aliens on the world the Shi'a had assumed to be empty who have an opinion about everyone's survival? Who will triumph in a fight to the death between Human jihad warriors and Swarmers that have never been defeated?"

Inside flap: "This First Contact/Alternate Earth History/combat novel tells the story of Helen Sarkissian, an Armenian-American linguist who discovers that she must hide her identity as a bisexual while working for the Shi'ites aboard the starship. She also struggles to defend the life of a black Westerner who faces Shi'ite punishment even as all the humanists on board resist the Shi'a effort to oppress them sexually, racially and culturally. Eventually, every human learns the price of extremism during First Contact. More "Humans versus Aliens in galactic combat" stories can be found in King's novels Stellar Assassin, Star Vigilante, Retread Shop and Galactic Avatar." Tom.

Cathy Spencer (cm_spencer) | 28 comments Hello Everyone,

I'm Cathy Spencer, and my short story collection, "Tall Tales Twin-Pack, Science Fiction & Fantasy," is free today on Amazon.

"Your Daughter is Marrying an Alien" (originally published by Foliate Oak Literary Magazine, November 2011) is set in the year 2080. Simple farmer Lloyd Hodgkin suddenly learns from his wife, Dorothy, that their only child is engaged, and not to the boy-next-door.

"Willimede's Quest" is the story of a young female guard on a quest to find an elixir that will keep her queen alive. Pursued by hunters, she seeks sanctuary at a king's castle, where she must convince him that she is who she says she is. But the mystical object she possesses may be enough to buy her safety.

Cybersp@ce is a mind-blowing, sci-fi espionage story, with ingredients of international intrigue, artificial intelligence, action, suspense, and romance. Set mostly in the Nevada desert, Cybersp@ce includes cyber warfare between nation states, the fantastic virtual world of an alien computer, and the hunt for one of the world's greatest spies.

From inside their home located outside the small town of Corona, New Mexico in 1947, a young boy and his parents, while watching a freak lightning storm, hear a loud crash after young Henry Summers witnesses what he thinks is an alien spacecraft falling from the sky.

Many years later, Nick Reynolds is appointed as the head of a Cyber Command taskforce established to deal with the increasing cyber warfare threat from China. Soon afterwards a new, disturbing type of cyber attack emerges, just as Nick learns that an imminent massive Chinese cyber attack against the United States infrastructure might be imminent. When the evidence suggests that the threat is real and that the attack will kill millions of people, Nick discovers that his team will not have enough time or the technical resources to stop the incredibly advanced attack when it comes.

Nick soon learns of another top-secret project, however, one which might offer a way to stop the attack and spare the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Dr. Henry Summers works with his scientist daughter, Kate, inside Area 51 at Groom Lake, Nevada. After years of trying to reverse-engineer an alien spacecraft, the team has a breakthrough when they discover how to interface with an alien ship's computer, by using a cybernetic helmet to enter a fantastic, virtual world.

Daniel Hope (endovert) The Inevitable by Daniel Hope My new science fiction book, The Inevitable, is now available on Amazon. Here's the blurb:

Tuck is on his last legs, literally. He is the last functioning bot in the galaxy, a broken machine that used to look like a man. Now he wanders between planets, searching for spare parts that can keep him running for a few more years. But he's out of parts, and he's nearly out of time.

He's a valuable relic of a bygone era when bots were a luxury on Earth, back before they were hunted down and destroyed. More and more collectors want Tuck, damaged or not, as the centerpiece of their collections. They'll do anything to get him, but Tuck will do anything to stay free and functional.

The truth is, Tuck is afraid to die.

He was originally programmed to value human life, even if they don't value his, but he can't ignore his own need to survive, at any cost. That's why Tuck is haunted by memories of the sixteen people he has killed over the last 150 years.

After a particularly dangerous run-in with a collector, Tuck meets a mysterious man dressed in white who offers a solution. In exchange for some help in a less-than-legal business venture, he'll give Tuck what he really wants: immortality. It's a bad idea, and Tuck knows it, but he can't ignore it.

Even if it means killing again.

Sam Richardson (Xine150) | 9 comments I'm Sam Richardson and I am writing book 2 of a six book military sci fi series which I am still trying to figure a name for. The first book is only 32 pages of story but it does it's job of creating questions to be answered by the other books and laying the groundwork for the overall story arc. It's called The Fall of Scourge and it's on Barnes&Noble.com and Amazon.com... that I know of. Feel free to review it if you want or comment on things you'd like to see happen through out the series. And let me know what you like or dislike so I can figure out what angles to use to remedy any problems there may be. I am going to be reading a lot of books on here once I find the time away from work so don't take my lack of rating or comments, or reviews as an indicator that I hate reading, because I love to read. I just need time to be able to do it.

It's all good. My buddy from work said the same. I'm going to try and make the first and second into some kind of mash-up kinda deal that will leave them as their separate entities but between the same front and back cover with a price fitting the book size. When I saw the price while seeing where it had been placed I have to admit that my jaw did a full out cartoon drop to the floor because there is no way that it could be that much. That's admittedly why I am considering self publishing the rest of the series so I can keep the pricing accurate and fair.

Sean MacUisdin | 61 comments As the edit of Tongs, Tartan, and Tin Pot Battleships, the latest book in The Scarlet Bastards series nears completion, I present the first of the series...

The Scarlet Bastards by Sean MacUisdin

Description

Breathe deeply, jawan, it shall be your last.”

So was the memorable opening dialogue of The Scarlet Bastards, the memoirs of a young man named Alexander ”Sikunder” Armstrong. A seventeen year old runaway from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, “Sikunder” fled the tedium of a well planned life to the frigid dystopian wastes of the Serberor Campus on the distant colony of Samsāra some 20 light years from Earth. Here, as a jawan in the United Nations Off-World Legion, “Sikunder” experiences the dumping ground of the refugee camps of the United Nations; where tribes and warlords rule with an iron fist and life is cheap and easily lost.

Come join “Sikunder” as he fights pirates on the decks of a paddlewheeler, teaches the finer points of the j-stroke to his decuria leader, MacShaka the Tartan Zulu, and encounters members of the villainous Chinese gang, The Black Hand, after a bottle of bad pinot noir and a plate of the foulest fish in the Seleucus Lacus!

It was Tate Publishing. I actually sent them an email asking if we could logically price it because I like to know that I have control over the aspects of my book. Hopefully they will see that lowering the price so it actually fits the size of the book is sound logic. If not then I am even more inclined to self publish the rest of the series.

message 373: by David P (new)

David P Forsyth (daidpforsyth) | 111 comments Self publish for sure. I actually used your book as an example of what NOT to do. :) I mean I'm sure it's a great story, but nobody will ever know at that price.

I actually had an enlightening discussion with Hugh Howey at book signing in March. As you may know, he held out and turned down 7 figure offers until Simon and Shuster finally gave him what he wanted. He sold the print rights to "Wool", but kept the digital rights. Why?

As he explained, most traditionally published books have a limited shelf-life. After a few years it might not be in print. But eBooks will be eternal (as long as the copyright lasts). He will be making 70% royalties on his eBooks long after Social Security goes broke. An eBook is a long-term proprietary investment, if you hang onto the rights. Also, he told me that I shouldn't hope that my first or even fifth book is a big hit. You want your TENTH book to take off. Then the readers will go back and read all your older stuff. It's great advice and I have already turned down several offers from publishers to follow it.

The point is that the whole publishing world is going through a paradigm shift. Authors no longer need to sell out to the gatekeepers of agents and publishers. If you can put out something that strikes a cord with the readers, the sky is the limit. IMHO.

Sam Richardson (Xine150) | 9 comments Cool, thanks. The ironic part is I probably can self publish from here on out. Because I had told them it was the first of a series but I think it went in one ear and out the other. Everything they built made it seem like it was a stand-alone book which it isn't. Though as I said, I will probably put the first and second stories into a little mini anthology type of situation once it's done. That way, even though they are two separate parts of the same series they will be able to flesh out the eBook and or paper/hardback more than they do separately. I'm aiming for at least 200 pages for the second book. The trick is coming up with enough material to fill those pages.

Your big problem, Sam, is that you will probably need to write a new "book 1" (unless you can buy back the rights from the publisher). Depending on the contract you signed, it is probably not "yours" anymore. It belongs to the publisher now. This might not be a big problem, since it is only short story length. You should be able to start over with a different lead-in (even if it is based the first "book"), but you can't just cut and paste what you already signed over into a larger work without violating the publisher's copyright.

This is another example of why I have refused to sign over my work to a publisher. It's more than a matter of pricing and royalty share. It's about control, ownership and use of your intellectual property.

Yep, I just gotta learn from this mistake and do better in the future. That's all anyone can really do. But before all that I'm going to find out if they can refresh my memory as to what the terms of the contract were. I can remember a few, but there were a lot and with all the stuff going through my head on a daily basis they kind of just fell into the void.

message 378: by John (new)

John Siers | 45 comments Sam:

I'm self-published, and my publishing services company (Mill City Press) requires me to set the retail price for both my printed books and ebooks. They also give me a lot of helpful advice on the subject. For example, this is from their guidelines on setting ebook prices:

"For eBooks priced between $2.99 tor $9.99, Amazon pays a royalty of 70% of the retail price and BN.com pays 65%. For eBooks priced outside of the $2.99 to $9.99 range, both retailers only pay 35% of the retail price."

In short, if you price your book at $2.00 on Amazon, you'll get 0.70 back per copy sold; but if you price it at $3.00, you'll get $2.10 per copy. If you price it at $9.00, you'll get $6.30 back, but at $10.00 you'll only get $3.50. Note: this relates to the price YOU declare as the "retail" price -- Amazon is still free to discount within their own margin, but that won't effect your return.

Of course, you still have to consider what readers will be willing to pay; but Amazon sure encourages you to put your price somewhere in the $2.99 - 9.99 range. Incidentally, Apple's iBookstore pays the author 70% regardless of the price point set, so if you are going to be selling a book for $1.99, Apple is definitely the place to be selling it. :-)

Thanks for the info, that will definitely come in handy when I finish writing this series. I plan to write until my brain runs out of ideas, so basically I'll never stop writing. And the ones that I finish I will put out there for the world. Only this time I will be self publishing so I can maintain control.

Sam, I'd like to echo what the other guys said, because it's good advice. Never sign away your IP to a publisher, and never pay them anything up front (because if they want money off you then they're not proper publishers).

Also, self publishing is dead easy. You can self publish to smashwords with a word doc which will see google, apple and others. It will also give you a kindle format version.

All the while you have control over both content and pricing.

John, welcome to goodreads. I'm not very skilled a social media myself, still trying to learn my way around like you. Congratulations on getting that first novel out and I wish you all the best with it.

Michelle Onuorah (michelleonuorah) Hi there! Glad to be apart of this group :)

My name is Michelle and I recently released a book entitled Type N about a girl whose blood can cure any disease. The blurb is below and kindle copies are available for free starting tomorrow through Sunday. Please check it out :)

Type N by Michelle N. Onuorah

What would you do if your blood could cure cancer? 18-year-old Nicolette Talloway is the target of a worldwide manhunt because of her blood type. When delivered via transfusion, her blood heals any ailment a human has and strengthens their immune system. The cure for cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other previously incurable diseases is running through her veins. Her blood is the only type of its own known to exist. As a result, Nicolette is no longer a private citizen but is the world's most wanted and sought-after human being. As she runs from government appointed agents, the question begins to shift from what her blood can do to why she has it. Is this a gift from God? And if it is, what does he want her to do with it?

Michael Brookes (technohippy) There's still time to download Faust 2.0 for free, here's what one 5* reviewer said about it:

"I found this an absolutely intriguing concept and loved the name the author gave to the entity – Misty Felice. (Say it to yourself a few times. It’s cryptic but it’s a give-away!) I loved the way the entity was able to twist the desires of inadequate people and make them believe that it, she, could grant them those deepest wishes. Isn’t it what we’d all like? One or two of its victims were greedy people but most were unhappy and needy and I felt for them. Sarah Mitchell is after it though. Can she succeed? The story, though perhaps a little involved to the computer layman, was written believably and the action carried me onwards. The ending, while a satisfying ending to this story, was also a beginning. I look forward to more in this series."

David Devere Murdered by Midnight (The Shane Webber Mystery Series, #1) by David Devere
Murdered by Midnight

This is a crime novel set in an alternate earth. A utopian society of anthropomorphic beings has had a murder within their government sanctioned province after one hundred and fifty years of peace. Now it is up to FBI Agent Shane Webber to enter the alternate bit of earth in Utah's northwest and uncover the clues to a young Pegasus woman's death.

I spin this book as "A Genre Bending Crime Thriller." I hope you enjoy it!

Hello good people, James A Conan here to post a preview link for my first novel.
http://jamesaconan1.blogspot.ca/
Traveling Show is the story of the Holotheater, a futuristic entertainment medium, the name of which I think is pretty self-explanatory. Join Gabriel Anthony and Hannah Girard, the stars of the show, as well as financier Peter Bruckweiler and inventor Dr. Yousef Nandrihar as they navigate the establishment of a new medium that will change the world. Cover art by my very talented friend Ian Lawson, complete work to be self-published this September. Enjoy the preview and wish me luck!

Ira Nayman (arnsproprietor) | 9 comments Hi, everybody. I'm a humour writer who has been combining my preferred genre with science fiction over the last few years. Feel free to check out my first novel, Welcome to the Multiverse* if you are so inclined, but that's not actually why I'm writing here.

I am developing a panel for science fiction conventions on the general theme of the mainstream publishing industry's aversion to current humourous science fiction. One of my arguments is that a lot of people are writing it, but either self-publishing or publishing with small presses because the majors won't go anywhere near them.

If you are a current author who has recently written humourous science fiction, I would love to hear from you, possibly get a copy of your latest work. If I enjoy it, I may review it and/or mention it on one of my panels.

*Sorry for the Inconvenience

Thanks,
IN
