message 256: by Natalia (new)

Natalia (nataliajaster) Hi! Does anyone have historical YA recs? I'm thinking medieval, Dickensian, old west, roaring twenties, or maybe interesting 20th century settings like the Berlin Wall?

I've read WWII and Victorian settings, but other periods seem harder to find.

Thank you!

message 257: by Devi (new)

Devi (views_she_writes) Just finished reviewing 4 books of all different genres.
2 of them I would specifically love to mention.
Whistlin' Dixie - A Tempered Steel Novel is a beautiful love story, first in the series of books. If you like to read love stories pertaining to one family, then this one is for you. Check my review of Whistlin' Dixie and let me know how you find it.
Another one is a tremendous book, one I would love to spread word across the globe if possible. The Dream Shelf is also a love story. But the love story here is of a child to their parent. An amazing book with a beautiful story. Check out my review of The Dream Shelf and prepare to be amazed by Jeff Russell

Timebound (The Chronos Files, #1) by Rysa Walker Time's Edge (The Chronos Files, #2) by Rysa Walker
The whole story does not take place in the past, but you get good chunks of it (late 1800's in the first book and early 1900's in the second). Really awesome series, I highly recommend them.

Damian | 1 comments The Ankhs: Red Marks The Child by Amira Awaad is by far one of the best stories I've read in forever and a day!

I love everything that's fantasy, so I was excited to see someone do something so different with it. Definitely a mustread.

Sadly, it's only available on Kindle.

I would totally recommend Legend by Marie Lu Legend or The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken The Darkest Minds legend is the more dystopian of the 2. The darkest minds is truly amazing and hits you in the feels. Both are great so I suggest reading them both. 2 of my favorite series of 2014 :)

Mitsy (mitsyc) | 12 comments Yes, I recommend two excellent YA novels.

The first is All the Broken Pieces by Cindi Madsen. This story ought to make people think, regardless of age, and is an intriguing book.

All the Broken Pieces by Cindi Madsen

The second is Cuts Run Deep by Amber Garza. This story is an urgent must read for teens and parents, especially. It's real, with issues teens deal with in reality, and has flawed characters. There is so much depth and a lot to talk about, I recommend Cuts Run Deep for all book clubs, as well.

Cuts Run Deep by Amber Garza

Dreamwalking? I'm thinking that The Diviners by Libba Bray would be a good one for you. And following the DOSAB recommendation from above, you should read The Girl At Midnight by Melissa Grey out this April! They've got the same vibe going, in my opinion and you might enjoy that.

message 285: by Mansi (new)

Mansi (DevilRebel62) | 5 comments Hey all, I really want to get into more high-fantasy novels rather than the YA books with Fantasy 'edges' to them. I see books such as Game of Thrones and some other popular books written by Brandon Sanderson (Mistoborn specifically) which have constantly been recommended to me, but I want to start off gradually and small I suppose. Unless that is one of you would say that reading books from either of those series first would help.

So recommendations would be lovely!

Katelyn I've read shadows on the moon. It's super awesome! Powers, lots of hardships, romance, and a lot character development. It's a great page turner and I love it so much and I'm sure you all will too :). Try the infernal devices series. (Like MORTAL INSTURMENTS) Its set in Victorian times. Red ruby I believe its called goes back in time to Victorian times/20th century

Steampunk Chronicles set in that time era as well.
