Megan (megandurrence) | 9 comments @Katie, you can try Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine. There's 15 books in the series and they now sell the books two at a time in volumes. The heroine is smart and clever. LOVE this series.

Another would be the Divergent series if you haven't already. Or The Darkest Powers trilogy and it's spin off by Kelley Armstrong.

Good luck and happy reading!

Here are my best bets for great books guaranteed to make you cry:
A Monster Calls A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness Unforgettable! I cried for hours.
Winger Winger (Winger, #1) by Andrew Smith One of my all-time favorites.
See You at Harry's See You at Harry's by Jo Knowles I think this one is even better than TFIOS
Code Name Verity Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity, #1) by Elizabeth Wein Destined to be a classic
The Rock and the River The Rock and the River (The Rock and the River, #1) by Kekla Magoon Another favorite.

Anything by Mitch Albom, while not YA, has a direct link to my tear ducts.
And if you're open to comics, I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly is pretty dang tear jerky and, while it took until the final volume, Y: the Last Man was fantastic and had some very poignant parts.

Julie Irvin | 4 comments I recommend "Aschwood Academy" by M.B. Cohen. It is a really fun fantasy novel about a school for the magically gifted and it is told from different points of view. It's actually a really fun, quick read and it's a new series by an author that I had never heard of - and I love the way the book flows and the humor in his writing! If you are a fan of HP - you would really enjoy this!

Betsy Campbell I am new to this discussion but I would recommend the Dragonian series by Adrienne Woods. Starting with Firebolt Thunderlight. Frostbite and 2 novellas and we are waiting for the next release of Moonbreeze. in November. The world of dragonshifters and their riders in an academy and romance between the dragonshifters and riders makes a beautiful and exciting story! Moonbreeze (The Dragonian, #4) by Adrienne Woods

Julie Irvin | 4 comments Aschwood Academy by M. B. Cohen was an awesome fantasy/ adventure book I read over the summer. It was a really fun quick read and kept me wanting more! I mentioned this book in a thread a while back and can't wait for the next in the series. It is on sale for 99 cents for the next few days on Amazon and I highly recommend it!

message 341: by [deleted user] (new)

All of my favorites have been recommended already, except for

Anomaly (Schrodinger's Consortium, #1) by Tonya Kuper

It's an awesome YA sci-fi read! I think this is definitely underhyped. The other book in this duology comes out fall 2016. :)

message 345: by Alex (new)

Alex I've read the Harry Potter series, Hunger Games series, Divergent, Mortal Instruments series, I am number 4 (Lorien Legacy series) and recently read An Ember in the Ashes. All easy to read page turners with lots of action and great premises!

I've also read Ashes, The Maze Runner series, Unwind series, and the rest of Divergent series - they were okay but not great.

What next? Would be good to find something that keeps you guessing with slightly more complex characters. I like sci-fi / fantasy - can anyone recommend a good series?

message 346: by thebookishbard (new)

thebookishbard Shatter me. It's very character driven with romance, dystopian and fantasy elements. The writing style is poetic. It is heavy on the romance though. I couldn't put it down and the 3rd in the series is the best. If you read them be sure to read the destroy me novella before unravel me.
The darkest minds is another great series. I have only read the 1st one but I'm reading the others very soon. Shatter MeThe Darkest Minds

message 347: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Alex- I'd recommend The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare, which is the prequel to The Mortal Instruments, and the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. Those are both great fantasies. A great sci-fi would be the Across The Universe trilogy by Beth Revis. I hope you like these if you read any of them! :)

message 348: by Zahra (new)

Zahra (skipdips) If you're looking for a good YA sci-fi book then try All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill. It's a standalone and there's also time traveling in it.
For fantasy, I'd recommend Eon by Alison Goodman, which is inspired by a Japanese mythology and featured a strong female protagonist.

Myllady Erica wrote: "Shatter me. It's very character driven with romance, dystopian and fantasy elements. The writing style is poetic. It is heavy on the romance though. I couldn't put it down and the 3rd in the series..."

This is a surprisingly good serie, and while it's heavy on the romance side, the way it's treated made it very good for me. The complete turnover of some of the characters et the whole complex devellopment of them (I'm really new at these reviews and discussions, it's hard talking about specifics without giving spoilers !) felt new to me, even if the idea behind it isn't a new one ;)

So. A good and different read. And loved the writing style too !

message 350: by Myllady (new)

Myllady So. Is it juste me or is there a really bad recurring theme in YA romance novels about the jock who can get EVERY GIRL EVER but never cares (And everybody's in awe and finds that normal) and then this one girl just plays hard to get a little and it becomes a complete game changer for both of them ? Is that not like... a bad idea to repeatedly put in young girls heads ?

YA romance are really nice fluff reading that I like when i'm in a rough spot or in a period where my brain is over tired... I don't like them enough to pay much for them though, so I haven't read much of them until my husband bought me a Kindle, on which I can buy them all (or almost ) for less than 8$ ... ''THAT'' jock-player-meets-(weird-recluse-shy-unknown-desperate)girl (with a side of cheating some time ?) story can be good, i've just read 2 I really liked (and 3 pretty bad...) ...

but now I want to read different things... coming of age stories, realistically flawed people, talking a bit and discovering each other while falling in love, ... Not insta-love changing everything stories...

Does anyone have suggestions ?
