Ellen, such great points! I didn't know that there was a particular term for this phenomenon, but the subversion you describe is something I've been thinking about for awhile now.

I'm curious about your experiences, observations, or whatever else you've noticed on re-reading Rebecca!

That is amazing, it is absolutely a supernatural sign that you simply must read along ;)

Are there certain genres that are more suited to feminist writing than others? Has this been true historically? Is it still true now?
I don't mean to suggest that there are genres that aren't suited to feminist writing, because I don't believe that's true at all. But I think it's a worthwhile conversation to have as we read this novel!

Rebecca is a long-time favorite of mine, and based on your comments so far, I know a lot of your have read and loved this book as well! Are there any books you'd recommend to another member who enjoyed reading Rebecca? If Rebecca is fresh in your mind from a recent (re)read, or if you finish fast and want another spooky read, hopefully this list can help.
We invite members to send in their recommendations for Gothic romance, thriller, horror, and other similar novels.
Please send me (Katelyn) a direct message with your recommendation with a short explanation of WHY the poet, volume, collection, etc. is appropriate for this list.
As I receive recommendations, they will be added to this post. I've begun the list with du Maurier's other novels, as well as the other novels from the member poll.

We're glad to see you're so passionate about these issues. Because this group is so large, we do our best to keep things organized and duplicate threads to a minimum. As such, we ask that members refrain from writing posts directly to Emma, as this group is meant to be for discussion among everyone rather than directed solely to her. Additionally, these are topics that have been discussed elsewhere on the discussion board. We encourage you to look up those conversations for insights from our members, and if you don't find what you're looking for, starting a topic to address what you feel is missing with the rest of our members.

Please post book suggestions in the How to Suggest a Book thread.
You can also post suggestions for Intersex books here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Because the thread has become more of a duplicate of that thread, I am going to lock and archive.
But I agree with Jo's response, and I'm glad you brought up the issue. It's great that you all feel strongly about this. Definitely get those books on the bookshelf by posting them in the thread(s) linked above. Thanks!

Happy reading!

@Benarji, your comments are swaying in the direction of victim blaming, I think you could be a bit more careful about the way you portray these victims of abuse.
@Meelie, for the record, plenty of sugar daddy-types are fine people. it's not a necessarily problematic relationship. It's the abuse, specifically, that is the problem here (again, imo)
