179584 Hi there,

I'm doing some clean up of the Book Suggestions folder. The purpose of the folder is to help many readers find books they're interested in reading based on genre and subject. It is not a folder for finding books specifically for your own projects. Additionally, there are threads dedicated to keeping track of media other than books in other parts of the discussion board (Helpful Resources is a good place to look). This folder is strictly for books.

179584 Hi there,

I'm doing some clean up of the Book Suggestions folder. The purpose of the folder is to help many readers find books they're interested in reading based on genre and subject. You can search the various topics here that are organized by subject and genre to help you find something you might be interested in reading.

179584 Hi there,

I'm doing some clean up of the Book Suggestions folder. The purpose of the folder is to help many readers find books they're interested in reading based on genre and subject. It is not a folder for finding books specifically for your own projects. For now, I'm going to lock and archive this thread. However, if you'd like to keep it open, please send me a private message and we can rename the thread to be more specific to what kinds of books are in the list. As of now, the title does not help other members find books that they are looking for. I hope this makes sense!

179584 Hi there,

I'm doing some clean up in the Book Suggestions folder. The purpose of the folder is to make it easier to find books of a specific genre or subject. As there are already a number of general category topics, and this is a list of many books on different themes, I'm going to lock and archive this thread. I suggest you post your recommendations either in one of the other general category threads, or according to topic by book in various threads so readers can find specific books that they are interested in!

179584 Hi there,

I'm just doing some clean up in the Book Suggestions folder. Since this is a list taken from another website, and another general call for poetry suggestions has since been posted, I'm going to lock and archive this thread and suggest that you post these recommendations on this thread if you'd like to: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

179584 Hi all, I've just gone ahead and changed the title of the thread to be a bit more concise and specific. Hope that's okay!

EDIT:

Actually, I've just realized as I've been cleaning up the Book Suggestions folder that there is already a thread for feminist poetry here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Please be sure to do a quick search using the bar to the right of the discussion board before posting to check if there is already a thread for that topic. Moderators will lock and archive duplicate posts.

179584 Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for the recommendations. In the interest of organization, we do not allow individual threads for book suggestions. You can suggest it for the group by following the directions here: How to Suggest a Book
Additionally, you can suggest it in relevant book lists in the book suggestion folder. Those lists are based on subject matter, genre, etc. You can start your own list if you don't see one for a particular subject or genre already, but please check first, as we will remove duplicate threads.

179584 Hi Anna,

For future reference, there is an ongoing post for feminist book deals here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

For now, I will leave the post open so that people don't miss out on the one-day deals. Tomorrow, I'll lock and archive.

Also, I think this post makes more sense in the Helpful Resources folder, so I'll go ahead and move that for you.

Thanks for the heads up on the discounts!

179584 Dear Beatriz,

This is not a group to promote your work, as it is against the policies of both Our Shared Shelf and Goodreads in general. You can, of course, mention your work in relevant threads, but if your post consists of nothing other than a description/link of your work, a request for reviews, a special offer or giveaway, etc., please do not post it. Any self-promotional comments will be deleted by the moderator.

Best,
Katelyn

I agree with the problem you identify, but I also am thinking about problems of queer coding in Disney movies more generally... The character LaFou, as many previous commenters have pointed out, is easily read as gay in the animated version. Is it better to just be frank about his sexuality rather than continuing to queer code villains? I feel very torn about it. If we had more upfront LGBT representation in media, characters of all kinds, then it wouldn't be a problem for some of them to be "bad guys." It seems like this BatB is trying to stay fairly faithful to the original, and LeFou being gay seems to maintain that faith, but perhaps changing the plot to make another character gay would have been too far from the original. Kind of a paltry excuse, but hopefully this indicates changes to come for Disney!

179584 ROUND 3

The next 25 commenters will receive a free copy of The Vagina Monologues !!!

To clarify: we are spacing out the rounds in an attempt to be fair to members in all time zones.

If you win, you will receive a private message from a moderator in the coming days.

Those of you who have been waiting a long time, we are so happy to see your enthusiasm and hope that you manage to snag a copy. We're enjoying following your conversations here!

To answer some of the questions that have been flying around:
I'm currently reading The Nix
I don't know if I can choose a favorite book, but I like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
My favorite book we've read this year was The Argonauts, but that was a hard choice. I've enjoyed most of them. I'm a couple behind at this point, sadly.
I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! It's currently 9:50 pm

Anyway, good luck to all of you! And again, thanks for your enthusiasm and participation. On behalf of the entire Our Shared Shelf team: You inspire us!!!

179584 ROUND TWO!

The next 25 responders will win a free book.
(Winners of the previous round are not eligible, only one copy per person!)

To clarify: only the first 25 comments after each moderator post starting a new round will win a copy. That means that those who responded after the first 25 comments after Jo's initial post will not be eligible to win copies. Each round resets the count.

There will be two more rounds after this one! Good luck!
