I usually end up buying multiple copies of the same book. The hardcover, the paperback (which inevitably gets dropped in the bath at some stage lol) and (most recently) the ebook... but then again, I am a Hollows tragic. It gets me all sentimental when I remember that I first saw the novel (in paperback) on display in a romance bookstore in Melbourne back in 2004(???) and I picked it up because the back mentioned vampires and I had just read LKH, was on a bit of a vampire kick and wanted more. What a journey!!! I no longer follow LKH but I have been following the Hollows for a long while now and well... it just keeps getting better and better. Fingers crossed that TUP will be the best yet!

Most have, only my oldest daughter is a non-hollows addict at this point. Even my granddaughters love the series!
I do think TUP will be the best yet. That is what is so very special about Kim Harrison novels. She pulls the best out for each book and boy this one looks fantastic!

I actually started out reading The Hollows first and then got turned onto LKH. I have since dropped LKH because I got tired of all the random harem sex, but I do still enjoy the older ones (right up until about book 8).

VNF same here, I also felt that as an author she dropped the ball on a favorite character and quit reading or collecting her. Too many men, too much sex in general.
Thank goodness for Kim and the Hollows they saved me from LKH!
If she'd have just stayed with Jean Claude I would have been just fine about it. He's the only character I care about in that series.

Delurking to ask a question... I took a chance and requested an eArc, but it's still pending after a few weeks. I figure the publisher is swamped and that my getting approved is a long shot, but I was wondering how long those who did get approved had to wait? As for the wing imagery, I remember that the Goddess of wild magic was written as an entity win many many eyes with feathered/winged purplish eyelids and when you grabbed her attention, one of those eyes would focus on you...

Yup, I think the approvals have already gone out to those that will be approved. Mine still shows pending after weeks, but I knew it was a long shot too when I requested it, so I'm assuming it's declined.
I didn't wait very long but I also jumped on it right when I saw it pop up. I would check everyday because I knew it would show up around when it did. Perhaps they just aren't checking right now though? I know some publishers do them in batches. I was declined once (though not with HC, I think it was because it was a foreign publisher) so pending doesn't necessarily mean decline. Though twice I was left pending past the books' releases and by then they expired anyway. If anything I've found net galley pickier than edelweiss has been even though I'm approved most times. I request far less there now than before edelweiss became popular. I'm just not as interested in NG's selection. I will say once upon a time when Harper Collins was on Net Galley, Pale Demon was there and I requested it and was approved, though it took weeks and it was much closer to the release date. I had no blog at all then and I was still approved, so who knows...Perhaps they are waiting for the tree ARC to be distributed for a while? The eARC was available earlier...
Yeah maybe they do a sustained release, a few books at a time.
A set of edelweiss approvals/declines for the ARCs just went out. Keeps your eyes peeled if you sent a request. As suspected, they are indeed doing a very limited release.
Yeah, I just got a decline but they were super nice about it. I liked that they sent out the notice and that it was framed a bit like "it's not you, it us being careful..."

@KritchieI agree... While I know some don't want to be spoiled (and they are presumably not following this thread), I really appreciate the enjoyment that a high quality, well-thought out snippet or quote can bring. The OMG factor and speculation are just marvelous. It really helps to keep you going through those long weeks and months waiting until the release date. I believe that VNF has perfected this art form with her marvelous snippets/quotes in the status updates for TUP (if you have not already visited there you should). If there is anyone else out there that is similarly skilled at sharing (or was willing to have a go), I am sure there would be a receptive audience here ready and waiting...
Kim has done a pretty awesome job in past years feeding us snippets by way of FB and the blog. I have to say the quote: (view spoiler) has to be (for me at least)one of the most anticipated scenes from the upcoming book. Having read Kim's description of it on her blog so many years ago, to have it finally come to fruition is going to be nothing short of spine tingling... *shivers*
Completely O/T but I love the way Ilona Andrews also gives us snippets. Kim and Ilona rock!!!

I LOVE VNF web site "Urban Fantasy" and all her reviews are "right on". I have read so many different authors over my long years and finding new exciting ones is getting difficult but if VNF gives a 5 star and good review, then I always try that one.
I can't say enough about how good Kim is, I love her writing voice and style no matter what series of short story she puts out. She is one of the best!

Aww thanks guys! I'm just a fan trying to channel my Hollows obsession appropriately lol. But I always appreciate having fellow Hollows fans. Until goodreads and my blog i didn't even really know there was a fandom and I've been reading for a while. As for Ilona Andrews, they are so amazing. When I first was starting out reading the series and was updating my status on here, they commented because they were seeing how much I was enjoying it. And then they sent me an autographed copy of the book. SO RANDOM BUT SO AWESOME!! And yeah, Kate Daniels is absolutely fantastic and it's in my Top 5 favorites. The Hollows is #1, Fever and the Dorina Basarab series duke it out for 2 and 3, and then Kate Daniels and Bloodlines probably duke it out for 4 and 5.
I'm sorry, but what does VNF stand for? I'm looking in to all of your suggestions :). I need something to occupy my wondering mind until TUP comes out. I've been rereading the last chapters of EA and PD. I can't wait to read TUP already!!!

@ZeenatI think it has to be something to do with wild magic and wild magic users and maybe something to do with the 'mystics' that Kim mentioned. JM's post picked up on the 'winged' imagery from previous books and I completely agree as I think the sound of wings was mentioned in that scene in Chapter 2.
Funnily enough, while I am really looking forward to the magic using/mythology part of the next book, the thing I can almost not bear to think about is the Rachel/Trent relationship. I know this probably sounds strange, but from the focus and tone of the opening two chapters, Rachel is clearly going to be forced to make some sort of decision in regards to her relationship with Trent. I say that because, left to her own devices, I truly believe that Rachel would continue to have skirted around the issue forever if not for the fact that Trent has been pressing things (ie. the kiss in EA). The feeling I am getting from the opening chapter in particular is that Trent is interested in Rachel romantically (I must admit, I feared that he might just be flirting at the end of EA)-but it seems he is actually serious about testing the waters (for whatever reasons he might have). What I fear most, however, is the collateral damage that such a relationship would wreak on both their lives. While I love a bit of romance, if Kim is being realistic and remaining true to the trajectory of the series, the potential for damage is huge, particularly on Trent's side. Rachel recognises this (there is a quote in Ch 2 in which she as good as admits that she is doing him political damage by simply working as his security) and then there is the whole other issue of his children, of his standing in the community and all the elven politics previously mentioned (admittedly only in passing but presumably with the potential to affect his business interests and political clout). If Trent were theoretically to give it all up to be with Rachel (which I will admit sounds almost unthinkable to me at this point in time)it would represent a seismic shift in the trajectory and tone of the series. Will this book and the next book be darker as result? I think it is almost inevitable. What is guaranteed is that we are all in for one hell of a ride when the book finally releases. What do other people think?

I love the idea of Trent pressing things. Nice imagery. ;)There are definitely some hard decisions that have to be made, consequences weighed. Rachel and Trent are sort of like the Romeo and Juliet of the Hollows-verse: two (potential) star crossed lovers from opposing houses - though hopefully without the stupidly tragic ending.

Why couldn't he have her at his side because he will need her to get through the repercussions of being an elf. Wouldn't he?
@KritchieI must say-I find Rachel's vow in that regard very reassuring. I wouldn't want her to throw herself away, but I would hope that Trent wouldn't expect that either... I'd like to think better of him

I have to say-Romeo and Juliet did come to mind, but then so did The Age of Innocence and Anna Karenina to name a few others... ;-) Whatever happens-I just keep telling myself that Kim has promised all the main characters a HEA so no matter what the fall out, even if Trent were to throw it all in for Rachel and ends up having to work as a stable hand or a gardener and Rachel's Vampiric Charms business goes bust and she is forced to open a charm shop, presumably they will be all be happy with their lot... lol (but I don't think that is going to happen)
Oh dear!The whole Rachel/Trent thing has me worried. I have always thought they'd be great together and it seems from the first 2 chapters they have both started to realise it's what they want. But can they have what they want? I don't think either of them believes they can.
Not without some serious consequences. I'm not sure Rachel believes the consequences are worth it for Trent and yet it seems Trent has been letting his heart make more of his decisions lately.
Is this a good thing? He is loosing his grip on a lot of things he thought were important at the beginning and ultimately will he loose too much and blame Rachel? I see trouble ahead for them and people are going to get hurt.
The question is will they come out of it the other side?

Living arrangements does pose an interesting question. I've always been curious about Rachel's almost off hand comment about her and Jenks moving out to an apartment. Jenks owns the church so why would he move out? The only thing I can think of is that with all his children growing up and moving out, he won't need such a big space.

Sigh....can't. wait.

And Mae, the official release date is February 25, 2014. So late February :P.
