I was thinking about making a character who makes prosthetics for people affected by the shadowfog. Is there a specialized role for that, or would they just be a geneal mechanic or engineer?

let's ignore what i had here originally. i'm going to kill myself this is the third time im writing it. no apologizing like oh so many questions i cannot the writing quality is going to be confusing please just roll with me rn

so. body mods. does bone structure just change after they modify their bodies? or is it more like an illusion? would their bones like literally crush and reshape or would it bend and mold like rubber? is it painful? is there long lasting damage like with broken bones? like joint problems, nerve damage etc? could they end up with like osteonecrosis or nerve damage or something if they shift too much or too often and never be able to modify that specific part again? could they end up with uneven limbs in their original, unmodified form? when they die, does their body revert back to it's original form or does it stay how they were in their last moments? does this effect the investigators and militia who are investigating their deaths?

and regarding to alisa, runalithe 2nd - maybe an orphan teen on the streets is more likely to be taken in as a gang member than an adult? she could have scoped it out and stayed there for a year or two before returning to runalithe?

we are trying to limit the contact between runalithe and the sister cities before the arrival of the squad. the initial idea for this world was that runalithe was so far from the cities that the people from the two areas had no contact with each other or reason to know about each other until the shadowfog gave runalithe a reason to seek out magic, and the cities have the most magic on the moon. of course, things changed as people created characters, but rory and i have been clear that we want to limit prior contact between the cities and we wanted to limit it to one or two characters at most, with the best case scenario of no contact at all. at this point so many of the runalithe characters have ties to the cities. there are so many other countries and continents to choose from. they could have easily been an orphan and taken in by a gang in any other city or country across the globe. i hate saying no, but we're really trying to limit just this one thing

you can use whatever suits your character best! voxthain has a tinkerer's guild of sorts so that's definitely a good character to have over there seeing as the shadowfog is slowly creeping in on the cities now. transmutation is the magic that your character would specialize in, as that allows characters to create and form physical things, but you could label them as mechanic or engineer, your choice!

that's up to the user. magic and modifications exist that change things entirely, their physical composition, but some opt to only make modifications an illusion. that's up to the magic wielder and what they can or want to do. i'd say no, it's not painful, as magic can be regulated and used for literally anything. someone with no healing expertise trying to warp their body would hurt for sure, but if someone could manage to handle both magics, it wouldn't hurt at all. there are long-lasting issues if someone warps their body without any experience or if they do so carelessly. magic is a very diverse thing, so say a teenager fucked around and found out and they've deformed themselves and are in constant pain—that doesn't mean life-long chronic pain or that they've ruined themselves. someone with proper magic could fix or undo what they screwed up, is how i'd imagine it. upon death, their body would change back to it's original state if they used illusion, as their focus on the magic would be lost with their life. transmutation and literal physical changes would stay.

dang ash these are genuinely amazing questions and aspects i had never considered! yes absolutely it could affect the investigators looking into crimes and such, in many different ways. i feel as if crime isn't too often found in voxthain (as they're all mostly doing underground exchanges and not outwardly committing crimes) so there aren't common issues found surrounding identification and such but with all of these murders? it could definitely become an issue.

so like for those who do it through transmutations, and they have some brittle bone disease or something similar, would that affect their like modifications or could they just use magic to make themselves stronger? if the latter, does that mean that physical disabilities just dont exist because you can magic your body to just be different? does this include your mind too (like mental disabilities)? if you can do that, why is healing magic relevant? instead of healing a wound you could just change your body to not have it, or is healing like a shoot off of physical transmutation?

i believe we have it as magic being a cure-all if someone with strong enough magic would like to heal themselves or others. the shadowfog, as it sucks the magic from every living thing infused with magic, makes replacing something lost from it with magic impossible. hence prosthetics which are physical replacements. they could not just magic in a leg that shadowfog took, but they could if it was due to a disease or an accident of some sort if that makes sense. disabilities can and do exist, as some people may not want to be healed for whatever their own reasons. it is possible though. and no, mental disabilities are not affected by magic. it could help soothe anxiety or alter someone's current state of mind, but it can't remove insecurities or depression or whatever a conscious mind holds. magic is the energy source, a soul is a mystery to even magic.

transmutation changes your body and warps flesh and bone. if you had internal bleeding or a broken bone, that wouldn't fix it, as it only changes what is already there and the bleeding would still be there and the bone's splintering would still need healing to replace it and add back what splintered off. it's a fine line but they are distinct things. transmutation and healing can be used hand-in-hand, absolutely, but they still do two separate things at the end of the day.

So, Voxthain and Asterath don't have a money economy, instead a trading economy if I'm correct. With that being said, what is the 'payment' that would be received in this economy for working?

Working would be more of something citizens enjoy doing or a way to pass the time at the least. It’s purely trading of goods and services.

Say an engineer enjoys their job but obviously needs to eat and have a roof over their head—they’d commission engineering jobs people requested in trade for valuable gems to trade for food or maybe that person is a farmer anyways, so they send some of their product to that engineer.

If that was a bad example, say a baker’s toilet broke and a plumber said, “Yo, I need some bread and cheese for some meals, I’ll fix it for you”—that’s an example of how that trade would go. It’s just trading what you can do for someone else for what they can do for you.

Councilors, though, are doing public service and volunteering their leadership and guidance to their cities. They can accept donations from citizens and they can even have their own businesses on top of Council work, but that is not a job in itself, additionally.

i dunno if it was asked (i'm assuming no since there are none yet) but what ages would be appropriate for teacher's assistants at cogworks?

well, I have one who's 26. I think just around the same age as would be acceptable for teachers?

so real world ages would be it, basically? was trying to see if an 18/19 yo who recently graduated would be alright

a teacher's assistant, for sure, but a teacher? they'd need to have plenty of experience in their field so while 20 is the minimum so as to not limit creativity, 22+ is preferred

I've been thinking about how characters in Lux would send quick messages to each other across the cities. Would something like magical paired crystals work - where you channel a thought into your crystal and it appears as floating text for the recipient? I'm picturing it as a mid-level transmutation spell most people could learn. Would something like this exist in this world?

Oh my gosh that's so cool! Yeah, that could absolutely be a thing!! Messages can be sent back and forth by those with Transmutation by default but a magical item could for sure exist for those who want to communicate but don't have strong Transmutation powers!

so, I was wondering if necromancy is a thing? I know it's not like a magical ability, but if there was like an artifact that could allow some necromantic things to occur
I'm working on a snake, and I was thinking he could have access to this artifact and use it to make dealings with people in exchange for him passing on messages or temporarily raising the dead, and it would be like a whole messed up system. I have a more like specific idea of what it would be like, but I wanted to ask if it was at all possible to do before fully fleshing it out.

of course, all good if you decide it's a no no, it's just a thought that occurred to me

so full transparency we specifically removed necromancy from the potential magic system on purpose because we didn't want people coming back from the dead in a rp setting because it would get so messy so fast but rory and i will text you about it because i hate limiting you or anyone creatively

yes. there are orphanages. in Voxthain, Cal (elizabeth's councillor) is mainly focusing on supporting orphanages and mothers among other things. mods can add anything if I missed it, just figured I'd answer since I kinda knew!

I kinda wanna play with the bestiary a little more would it be possible to have a character kinda like a park forest ranger type thing so he knows a lot about the environment and the different species because he kinda finds lost people within this wildlife park thing? Just an idea I had floating in my head
