Back in the last century, the world went through a period of gasoline shortage--the late 60s and 70s. I don't know what you mean by American exceptionalism. I never felt American. My Japanese friends said I was Japanese. My Jewish friends said I was Jewish. My Catholic friends said I should become a Catholic--oh how hard they've tried. My Black friends said I was downright Black. I always regarded myself as a person, neither of any nationality, color, or religion. I love all. I just hope all love me. Which I doubt.

In order to have more freedom, you must grant that to others, but I'm not too sure everyone has the same definition of freedom. I once talked to a Russian, who said he like America and the west because he could do anything he wanted and get away with it. I told him, the state has the right to prosecute you too. Remember, what you want, others have that right too in the west, even the state. As the Constitution has been interpreted institutions as people. And I think that's where the problem is. In my mind's eye, institutions are not people. But the Constitution has been interpreted as such. This is why they claim the separation of State and Church. Or as the institutions like to say: Separation of State and Institutions. As I remember in my college Poli-Sc classes in the 1950s.

If institutions were granted full control over everything, we might as well give up our right to freedom, and the right to piss.

In my humble oponion, I live in New Zealand we lost all freedoms for the month of March and couple more months of less lost freedoms but now 9 months later we are free from community covid. We can gather in groups with confidence, buisness doors are open, don't get me wrong I still worry but I'm queitly confident. I believe every generation has a duty to itself, freedoms arent for free these freedoms we enjoy come with a price and need to be earned again and again. By one, trust in our leaders and two sacrifice by its citizens in obedience. In New Zealand its compulsory to be able to vote we have a law for it not kidding you must register or risk fines, Australia go a step further and make it compulsory to vote anyway I digress, We the people must trust ourselves who we elect to lead us, extremely important civic duty and that they our elected leaders make the right decisions trust trust trust, is a must my prize is to earn freedom they definately aren't for free. But like i said before we are covid free in the community. Anyway enough prattle I've had my two cents for what it's worth Peace out to all the world.

I certainly don't trust our political leaders after the shameful behaviour and inept performance of politicians on the Left and Right over the past year or so. As for their handling of the pandemic, we are Covid-free because we are locked off from the rest of the world. Covid (like the flu) is here to stay so what does the future hold for Kiwis? Do we stay locked off forever?

Kia ora Lance, By nature I'm pretty much an optomist and somehow appears kiwis in general are mostly a conservative bunch unless something really erks them and gets up their nose and puts their backs up then we can be quite bad buggers really aka 81 bok tour, no one knew covid was coming changes are here to stay unless I decide to go out on a limb and become a politician, you me and the rest of us must obey, these right or wrong decisions at least until the next electionas most people can see the logic in these decisions ..but a trunk hugger myself no limbs for me please, I'm going to adapt to the new normal whatever that turns out to be, don't get me wrong I will push the limits of the rules if they don't add up for me, but at the moment things are okay ish. Just poor old tourism has been hit for 6, but I'm confident one day the dust will settle. I know, I will look back at this time and think gosh what was I worried about, as long as my family are safe and majority of kiwis act along the same rules then well I'm sure in the end we should be all right. I'm a Kiwi too, Ken, and NZ has been an utter embarrassment this year. Dunno what's happened to our country, we used to be known internationally as standing up for human rights and freedoms and against tyranny... but now NZ is veering towards socialism at breakneck speed (we'll soon be the Scandinavia of the South or maybe something worse and many kiwis don't realize they are flirting with Radical Leftist politics)...Our govt is locking Kiwis down whenever there are even just a few cases and not even deaths most of the time. So this is setting an extremely dangerous precedent. There will always be viruses in future, you think a small, volatile economy that relies heavily on tourism can afford this long term? Eventually everyone will get how this is about control and we cannot be passive here at all or wait for the next elections. The history of Radical Left politics shows that such governments will never stop until the people stand up against them and say ENOUGH.

When the history books are written one day about this period of time, when everyone has the wisdom of hindsight, NZ's approach under the Ardern's "leadership" (which the Gates/Clinton foundations LOVE) will go down as exactly what not to do in reaction to any new virus.

Another key thing to understand is governments in this era are not just of their nation. NZ is a tiny player on the world stage, so it's easy to trust them and not consider they could be attempting great evil. But when you realize the NZ govt, like all nations governments of this era, are offshoots of globalist organizations like the the UN, WHO, IMF, World Bank etc etc, greater suspicion will arise...

James, I’ve also read the interview with the discredited scientist, Ferguson. My understanding of it is that the UK’s SAGE committee of scientific advisors didn’t think they could implement lockdowns in a Western liberal democracy like ours, but once the Italian Government followed the draconian Chinese example then it suddenly became an option. A classic example of panic followed by herd stupidity, and the result of what happens when elected politicians neglect their duties and hand over power to scientific committees.

For the benefit of non-UK group members, I can confirm that every year we are told that our NHS is stretched and under pressure. I don’t doubt this and salute the staff on the ground who keep it functioning.

However, as it’s important to enter the new year on a positive note, it’s good to see that the NHS isn’t under quite as much pressure as reported by our media. Indeed, it seems to be under less pressure than last year which, in itself, was a lot quieter than many previous years:

The links show how, since the discovery of the vaccines, the WHO has changed their own general definition of herd immunity. Apparently, it is no longer something which can be achieved when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity developed through previous infection, and can only now be achieved through vaccination.

I remember Anni using the phrase ‘cui bono’ after my first ever post on this thread. So, who benefits from this change in the definition of herd immunity? Has anyone been leaning on the WHO, by any chance?

It’s interesting to note that the WHO now recognises the ‘profound negative impact’ caused by lockdowns and I believe that in 2021 they will finally be lifted. Governments and other lockdown instigators have backed themselves into a corner through their folly and the vaccine is the only way for them to get themselves out of it with their 'competent' public images intact.

For this reason, although I completely buy into the reservations about the vaccine, I sincerely hope it is a success - at least in terms of being a good placebo, anyway. Judging by the crooked antics of our rulers throughout this pandemic, their only alternative to a successful vaccine will probably be to have us all walking around in the fresh air wearing gimp masks, goggles, ear muffs and rubber gloves to ‘stay safe’ from extra-extra-long covid.

Agree with you, Beau, on most of this, but I still believe that the ONLY alternative to ANY vaccine is NO vaccine.

Anni, all other things being equal, I'm completely with you. I don't want the vaccine for the same reason I don't have the regular flu vaccine - I don't regard either type of illness as a serious threat to me and anyone worried about them is free to take it themselves.

Also, as highlighted in this group's various flu threads, there is every reason to be suspicious of these hastily-prepared vaccines.

The reason I want the vaccines to at least be 'seen' to be a success is because it is the elite's quickest way out of the mess they've created. For lockdowns to end next year (and I think they will), the only other face-saving way for them to do it is to continue to ramp up fear of the virus by introducing other measures, like masks in all outdoor areas. I just can't help thinking that they won't let this virus die a natural death.

Hope I'm wrong and am certainly not now pro-vaccine, but I'd much rather see restrictions lifted via a hastily-prepared (but, of course, non harmful) vaccine than see this farce carry on well into next year. If the vaccine proves harmful then it obviously can't even be 'seen' to be a success and we're back to square one.

So, let the covid fanatics test it on themselves and once they feel safe, hopefully while still breathing, then we've got a quick route to putting the trials and tribulations of 2020 behind us.

I agree Michael. These days 'conspiracy theorist' is a label increasingly ascribed to someone holding an alternative viewpoint. It's an easy way to end an uncomfortable conversation and shut someone up.

Lockdowns will be seen as the "single biggest public health mistake" in history, a Stanford University professor has warned.

Jay Bhattacharya, a professor of medicine, told The Telegraph's Planet Normal podcast that there have been "enormous collateral consequences" of keeping people inside and isolating them from their loved-ones during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The epidemiologist believes many scientists have clung onto the perceived effectiveness of lockdowns, and they "remain attached" to the idea despite the "failure of this strategy".

"I do think that future historians will look back on this and say this was the single biggest public health mistake, possibly of all history, in terms of the scope of the harm that it's caused," said Prof Bhattacharya.

"Every single poor person on the face of the earth has faced some harm, sometimes catastrophic harm, from this lockdown policy.

"Almost from the very beginning, lockdown was going to have enormous collateral consequences, things that are sometimes hard to see but are nevertheless real."

Prof Bhattacharya gave the example of children who are abused at home, who may have been unable to get the help they need during lockdowns because there are no adults present who could step in.

In addition, many patients with serious illnesses or who may have an undiagnosed illness have been reluctant to attend hospital over fears of catching the virus, he said.

James Morcan, you talked about people who have an undiagnosed illness being reluctant to go to hospitals. It's not that we were reluctant, just that we were forbidden! My son's, "urgent" surgery and my diagnostic tests were delayed a year. I had my tests, my son's still waiting for his surgery.
